What a surprise, a judge in Lubbock granted an injunction to allow Texas Tech's $5M NIL QB Brendan Sorsby to play in the upcoming season. The NCAA had banned Sorsby for life for placing thousands of bets on college football, including his own team (Indiana at the time). The judge ruled that the ban would cause irreparable harm to Sorsby if he wasn't allowed to train and play.
College football is dead.

One correction. The judge assigned the case in Lubbock recused himself and the case was transferred to Fort Worth. The judge there has no connection to Tx. Tech.
Having said that, the decision was ridiculous. If you gamble on the sport you play, you should be barred for life. No excuses, no exceptions. The message this decision sends is that it is ok to bet on your sport’s games because if you can’t, it would hurt your feelings.
I’ll skip the “old man” rant about taking responsibility for your actions until another day….

Clarification: Ken Curry is a retired Tarrant County (Fort Worth) judge. He was hearing the case in Lubbock because that was where the case was filed. No judge sitting in the 99th Circuit opted to oversee the case. Therefore, a retired judge from another part of the state had to be brought in. Apologies for the error in my original post.

They were both appointed within a couple months of each other...from the same region...by generally the same selectors. Monoculture is the law up there.

Texas A&M, UNT-Dallas, and SMU all have their law schools in the DFW area, but only Texas Tech is in/near Lubbock.

I want to say tons. At the state level, Newsom just announced appointments last week and the new judges were from all over. In the Ninth Circuit, most did not go to Cal or Stanford.

There are 15 Courts of Appeals in Texas, with varying number of judges. There is only one other that has all of its justices that went to a single law school, again Texas Tech Law School. The Eleventh Court of Appeals also has 4 judges, representing the area south of the panhandle (the 7th covers the panhandle).
Also interesting was the 3rd Court of Appeals (Austin area). Its 6 judges are all female.

I asked ChatGPT for a list of SFBA judges that did not attend either Stanford or Cal for undergrad or law school. The returns:
Federal appellate and district courts; 12 judges
California Supreme Court/1st District Court of Appeal; 13 judges
Superior courts in all SFBA counties: harder to find, they don't all publish undergrad or law school alma maters, but looks to be "dozens."
