NCAA tournament expansion - BostonCard - 04-30-2026

Looks like we are headed to a 76 team tourney.

The concept of restraint seems foreign.

But isn't this good news for not-great teams like Stanford?

RE: NCAA tournament expansion - BostonCard - 04-30-2026

I mean, generically, having an opportunity for more at large teams will benefit mediocre major conference teams the most, as the article notes.  We probably would have been in the tournament under a 72 team tourney as we were on the wrong side of the bubble in most pre-tourney bracketology assessments.

Not sure what being 14 seed would have accomplished.

If you want June basketball madness, just come to Hoopfest in Spokane being held on June 27-28.

422 half courts -- 24,000 players from 6,000+ teams -- 45 city blocks shut down -- 250,000 people in attendance

Let's do this - a two day tourney would save me two lost weekends of viewing time! Forget zone D - Imma betting on the team with the best No-Doze D!

how long until a "deserving team" with a losing record gets an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament?

Not quite the same, but the SMU men's team made the tournament this year with an 8-10 conference record (20-13 overall) as an at-large 11-seed. They lost to Miami (OH) in the first-four round.

(On a related note, Stanford finished with a 9-9 conference record and defeated SMU 95-75 in February.)

of course I would not let any team in the tournament that had a below 0.500 in their conference unless they won their conference tournament championship
