Quote:For the first time since 2012, Stanford football will hold a spring practice at historic Kezar Stadium in San Francisco.
Stanford’s practice on Saturday, April 11, will be open to the public. Admission is free for all fans, with gates to Kezar Stadium opening at 1:30 p.m. Practice will run from 2-4 p.m., with an autograph session scheduled immediately following practice. A family-friendly fan fest will begin when gates open, featuring food trucks, inflatables, and games.

(1) This is great news !

(2) I will be there !

(3) Having the Spring Game / Practice in Kezar ....makes it a special event, not ho-hum on campus.

(4) No disrespect, but If you want 'New & More & More Diverse fan interest' you have to leave campus & the surrounding wine & cheese MenloPark, PaloAlto, Atherton, PortolaValley, SharonPark enclaves & do outreach to cities like San Francisco & San Jose, where regular working-class 'Non-Stanford' football fans live.

(5) For next year if its at Kezar, to make it even more of a 'Attract new & different fans event' .. I would add:

•. Muscle-car show
•. Fashion Show / Swimsuit Contest / Fitness Competitor contest
•. DJ Contest
• High School Marching Band Contest
• Barbecue Contest

(6) These events will bring out 'regular non-stanford football fans & regular non-stanford working class folks' , ...a percentage of which might change their perception about Stanford, & buy football ticket packages ..to add butts at Stanford Stadium on Fall Saturdays !

(7) Hope this outreach to go to San Francisco & San Jose for 'Stanford Events' continues ...to do outreach to 'regular Non-Stanford working class folks'.

In 2026, San Francisco is a working class town the same way UCLA is a working class school. I'm stoked the open practice is at Kezar but any single family home within walking distance of Kezar sells for $2 mil easy, and many probably over $4m.

2. Ha, You already know if I like 'Muscle Car Shows' (which I do), that I also like 'Monster Truck Shows & Tractor Pulls' ; Went to quite a few when they were held at the old Cow Palace, in SF, back in the day !

Agree mostly true sadly; But luckily even with the gentrification & invasion of 'nerds, tech-bros, venture-cap ex-pat millionaires from overseas caste systems, wealthy opportunistic house-flippers, air-bnb vultures, greedy capitalistic real-estate developers & predatory landlords' ....in certain sections of the Mission, PortreroHill, & HuntersPoint districts of SF ....you can still find a fair number of regular working class folks & families, who love football, DJ contests, custom-car shows & tailgate cookouts !

If you read the linked article it’s because the baseline is the 20-year average SP+ average, which includes some great years from 2008-2015, so last year’s rating is 17.5 pts below the long term average. The expectation we will be better is solely an expectation of some reversion to the long-term mean and not a comment on Protchard’s hiring.

Even if Pritchard is an average coach, the idea is that Taylor's teams were underperforming the talent, which I think is what Bill C. is intimating. I didn't want to go negative immediately, but I think that's the main takeaway.

His teams were underperforming the long-run (20 year) average, not the inherent talent.

I'm not to a point where I feel comfortable plugging a specific coach's name into SP+ projections -- for instance, applying a certain bump to any school coached by Cignetti, Sumrall, et cetera. But this year's SP+ projections will feature adjustments for teams that made coaching changes after either over- or underachieving against its historical baseline by a solid amount. Who might that affect? Let's take a look.

Not surprising that with a couple of years of bad seasons, Taylor looks bad compared to a 20-year baseline that included some historically good Stanford teams (at least for Stanford), which Connolly points out when Stanford “looks good” by his analysis.

And of course the years of badness have coincided with changes in the sport, specifically the NIL and transfer portal combo and (more recently) the change in conference.  I am happy to see the back of Taylor, but I am skeptical that a mere coaching change will fix things.  I think we have to face that this is the “new normal”, and while I hope we will have periodic bursts of adequacy, I think the Harbaugh/early Shaw years are unlikely to be repeated, no matter the coach.

I expect that the Kezar parking lot will be blocked off to the public, but you can check there first.

There is free parking in Golden Gate Park across the street from Kezar.  Parking is difficult on weekends, but it's easier than finding a street spot around the stadium.  Usually I can find a spot there after trolling for a while.  This is what I'm planning to do.

While there is abundant parking at the UCSF Millberry Union parking structure, beware that they now charge a premium unless you have a validation from the hospital - $31 for 2 hours, $60 for 3+ hours. If you're willing to pay that much, you can enter the garage at Irving & 2nd Ave about 2 blocks from the stadium.

Worst comes to worst, there is paid underground garage parking at the music concourse in Golden Gate Park.  It's a pleasant one-mile walk to the stadium from there.
