To be fair, at least a couple of the WWP players were late to the match because they couldn't find parking.

What? Late for their own match because of parking? That's an excuse I had never heard before. Too many things wrong with that (take a bike, have somebody drive you, get there earlier, reserve parking for coaches/players if you know parking will be a problem, etc.)

Yeah, if I were the coach that tidbit would never leak to the general public!  It makes the whole organization look bad if you can't get your team to the match on time, at home, against a ranked team, your biggest rival, and last year's national champion. Ugh.

I assume it was a joke too.  But parking was indeed a nightmare near Avery this weekend because they were using the Galvez and other lots for the LPGA tournament.  I went to the Lacrosse match at Cagan and ended up being 10 minutes late because I had expected parking to be super easy.

Stanford defeats UCLA 12-11 in 3OT in the semifinals of the MPSF conference tournament. They play USC tomorrow at 2:30 in the final with the winner the likely #1 seed in the NCAA tournament. The MPSF tournament is being played in Berkeley so stop by if you can to root for the Cardinal.

Yes!  Wish it was on TV or a subscription service I have, but at least I'm happy they won.

Uh.... I canceled my Overnght subscription last year, but I guess they don't know it.  I can watch today!

Announcers say this is the fewest matches for Stanford in many years.

Dang.... They've got the Cal announcer as one of the announcers.

Q2 was uglier for both teams. But Stanford is somewhat lucky to still lead 5-4, after blocking a penalty shot and a 2-meter shot.
(BTW, the Live Stats are dead.)

Stanford ended the 3rd Q with a 6 on 4. By winning the sprint to start Q4, they continued the 6 on 4. Just after getting to full strength but before the defense could adjust, Stanford scored. Then Stanford scored on the next possession to tie it up.

Stanford wins the MSPF tournament 16-14 over USC.
Dhalluin with 6 goals.  Flynn with 4.
Stanford 9 of 14 on power plays.

Tomorrow night is the reveal of the NCAA seedings.

Btw, Stanford's win yesterday over UCLA in OT was the 3rd 1-goal win over UCLA this year.
Stanford''s only loss was to USC 11-10 earlier in the season.
While Stanford will probably only have one really hard game in the NCAAs, it will be a tight match.

Some interesting tidbits.
Stanford WWP played fewer games this year.  Per the announcer, he invited good teams in for practices, giving game-like experience.  I suspect that's an effort to reduce cost by avoiding travel.

Also, to remind people, WWP had TWO significant transfers in this year:  
In these cases, I suspect the transfer is less about NIL (I could be wrong!) or even a better chance at a NCAA championship, and more about playing with Olympic-level athletes and their coach.  It would be interesting to think about why Stanford (vs UCLA or USC or even Cal).  Stanford's coach, John Tanner, has had a very successful 28-year career.

It might be significant if Stanford is using its House money to strengthen some of Stanford's teams with best chances for national championships, rather than getting into bidding wars for other sports.
Overnght lets you watch previous games, so I got to watch the Stanford-UCLA semifinal match.  

As noted above, Stanford's Dhalluin misses a penalty shot with 1:40 in regulation that would break the tie.

What I don't think anyone has mentioned here is that Stanford finished the 4th quarter with no goalie (7 on 6) with just 3 seconds on the clock.  Stanford's shot was pulled down by the UCLA goalie who made a full-court shot with 1 second on the clock.  It was an arcing shot that landed about 6' from the mouth of the goal and bobbed and floated toward the goal.  Left alone, it would have floated across the goal (for a UCLA win) but Stanford's goalie chased it down from mid-pool to just deflect it. It looks to me that the front of the bali had crossed the goal line (but all the ball has to cross).   Whew!

The tie in regulation results in two 3-minute periods.  When tied after that, the teams play 3 minute periods where the first to score wins.

UCLA wins the sprint but a lob shot is pulled down.  Stanford calls a timeout but then can't get a shot off.  UCLA gets a 6 on 5 but their shot is blocked.  Stanford then gets a 6 on 5 but their shot is blocked out of bounds (so Stanford gets the ball back, 6 on 6).  Then the ball is passed inside to Ella Woodhead at the 2-meter line. She turns, resulting in a penalty call on her defender.  Dhalluin, who missed earlier, puts the penalty shot in the top right, wins the game.

MT, what did you think of the officiating in both the semifinal and final games? At this level with teams so closely matched, fouls called (or not called) can have a significant impact on the result.

Wow.  Significant transfers IN!  That's refreshing!  Thanks so much for the insight!  I'd watch all water polo games if they were televised somewhere I could access.  Until then, I'll live vicariously through these updates.  Go Card!
