Stanford MVB 2026 - Mick - 03-14-2026
Stanford men's volleyball team just had their best weekend of the year defeating #7 Brigham Young twice, yesterday (3-1) and just now (3-2)
Prior to BYU, Stanford beat Concordia twice and St. Francis twice, all four matches were 3-0 match wins. Guess we're not screwing around any more.
Difference? Perhaps the emergence of true freshman setter Jacob Little-Phillips, undersized at 6'2". He's an excellent setter, played on the USA Volleyball men's U21 team, one of the AVCA Top 25 underclassmen, 17 Open All American in 2024, two time state player of the year, four year letter winner, etc. He had been in and out of the lineup, played the first three matches of the season, sat against UC Irvine adn Jessup, played against Merced, sat first Hawaii match, played the second and has been the main setter ever since. For the uninitiated, setter is your most crucial position, the quarterback of the team. He's a very clean setter, only four setting errors and 313 assists all year.
And Alex Rottman is back. Rottman, from a prominent volleyball family redshirted last year. He was named MPSF Defensive Player of the Week for 10 digs and seven blocks against #6 UC-Irvine back in the first week of February.
Stanford lost that second Hawaii match 3-0 (just like the first one), but theyve won six straight ever since, including 3-1 yesterday and 3-2 just now against #7 BYU. Serving was clean, setting was clean, hitting .338 and solid, good defense. Evan Porter, on the All-MPSF frosh team last year as a libero had thirty digs in two matches against BYU, excellent work.
Stanford is now 9-8 on the season. They play the alumni next Saturday, and then the following weekend play #1 UCLA at UCLA. Stanford actually leads the MPSF with a 6-0 record in MPSF play, UCLA is right behind at 5-0 (they're 17-0 overall and have lost nine sets total in the seventeen matches). Should be fun.

Stanford plays #1 UCLA tonight and tomorrow night at 6 p.m. at Maples Pavilion.
UCLA is 18-0 and has lost nine sets all season, exclusively to teams ranked in the Top Five.
Stanford is 9-8, ranked #14, and on a slight upswing. Stanford and Pepperdine are tied for first atop the MPSF standings (6-0), and UCLA is right behind at 5-0 in the MPSF.
So you're saying there's a chance...

Could have been worse. At that level, it's partly a matter of who makes the fewest errors. UCLA made 32 errors all match (12 hitting, 0 setting, 15 serving, 2 blocking, 3 serve receive) and Stanford made 37 (18 hitting, 1 setting, 7 serving, 2 blocking, 9 serve receive--Nate Clinton 5, Alex Rottman 4). The nine serve receive errors is a killer, it's a sign of a team not passing particularly well while the other team was serving devastatingly well -- UCLA's 15 serve errors indicated that they were loading up on hard serves all night.
Rematch tonight at 6 p.m., same place, Maples Pavilion.

Saturday was another 0-3 match loss to the #1 ranked and undefeated Bruins. Outcome was a little better, 21-25, 22-25, 21-25. Attendance was up from 1,347 to 1,612. McFall and Carreira hit well (.800 and .500, respectively), but they only had 15 opportunities between them in three games, so our passing was not good. Our pin hitters didn't distinguish themselves, Rottman lead with a .210 hitting average. UCLA just has too many horses on both offense and defense.
UCLA and Pepperdine are the only MPSF unbeatens, they play each other this weekend. Stanford is at #4 USC on Friday and Saturday, they are currently tied for third place in the MPSF at 6-2.

Stanford lost twice to #4 USC in Los Angeles yesterday (3-0) and today (3-1). Set scores were 14-25, 21-25, 22-25 yesterday in front of 990 people at USC (15-3, 7-2). Set scores today were 21-25, 25-23, 16-25 and 17-25 in front of 1,004.

USC was dominant in most phases. Blocking was even. USC had a +10 lead in kills, a +3 lead in serving aces, a +9 lead in assists, and a +11 lead in digs. Pretty thorough win.

Looks like Coach Kosty split playing time in the first match between setters Brouillette and Little-Phillips. In the second match, Brouillette received the playing time.
Doesn't get any easier. Next weekend is Pepperdine in Malibu on Friday and Saturday, 6 p.m. Supposed to rain in Malibu both days.

Lost to #5 Pepperdine in three in front of 913 fans in Mallibu. None of the sets were close. 20-25, 19-25, 17-25. Stanford hit .173, Pepperdine hit .580. Basically, it was ugly.
Pepperdine is a tough team. UCLA (21-1) finally lost a match, to Pepperdine, 3-2. Both teams are excellent. We're just not there yet.
The two teams play again at 6 p.m. Stanford's ranking on Monday was #14. Might go down another spot or two this upcoming Monday.
I wouldn't count on MVB for an NCAA championship this year.

#14 Stanford (9-14) lost to #5 Pepperdine (20-5) 3-1. Game scores were 17-25, 25-23, 19-25, 21-25. They played a bit better than Friday, hitting .206 and holding Pepperdine to a .390 hitting percentage. Baby steps.

In the last two matches of the year, Stanford swept Menlo College, 3-0 both times.
Menlo College (3-20) lost 25-20, 25-18, 25-16 in Atherton before 200 fans on Friday, and 25-16, 25-16, 25-13 before 821 fans at Maples Pavilion on Saturday.
Stanford (11-14) finished tied for fourth in the ten-team MPSF with Vanguard (12-13), a school that they did not play this season. BYU, which defeated Stanford 3-1 and 3-2 during the season finished in 5th place, given their 7-7 league record. Stanford finished 8-6.

MPSF Men's Volleyball Championship Tournament will be April 22-25 (this week) at BYU in Provo. Eight of the ten teams are participating in the tournament, and Stanford is seeded fourth, playing #5 BYU in the first round on Wednesday, for the right to face UCLA on Thursday.

If Stanford finished in a tie for fourth with Vanguard, shouldn’t the 4th and 5th seeds be Stanford and Vanguard (in an order dependent on tiebreakers) with BYU being the 6th seed?

The only reason I can think of is that, because there are ten teams in the MPSF, but each team only played against seven opponents, it's possible that they only considered the opponents of each team that finished among the top eight. The bottom two were Menlo and Merced; Vanguard went 4-0 against them, Stanford and Pepperdine went 3-0 (Stanford only played UC Merced once, Pepperdine only played Menlo once), giving Stanford a half-game advantage over Vanguard and pulling Pepperdine even with Vanguard. Pepperdine smoked Vanguard, thereby (my guess) dropping Vanguard to sixth for purposes of seeding for the championship.

BYU was ranked #7 when Stanford swept them and are currently ranked 8th.

The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball tournament championship final is today, and it is UCLA vs. USC.
Here's how the tournament has progressed so far:
Quarterfinals
Pepperdine defeated Jessup 25-19, 25-21, 25-22
USC beat Vanguard 25-19, 25-13, 25-21
UCLA edged Concordia 25-23, 25-15, 25-19
Stanford lost to BYU, 18-25, 14-25, 25-23 and 21-25.
It wasn't as close as it sounds. BYU outhit Stanford .327 to .200. BYU had 31 overall errors, Stanford had 52. Stanford had 23 serving errors and one (1) ace.
Semifinals
USC beat Pepperdine 21-25, 25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 16-14. Very close semifinal, very evenly matched teams.
UCLA crunched BYU 20-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-18
Finals
UCLA (28-1) vs. USC (19-6). UCLA beat USC twice in the regular season, 3-2 at Galen and 3-1 at Pauley. The match will be played on the Big Ten Network.

John Hawks, UCLA head coach, is now 50-8 for his career. UCLA's senior setter Andrew Rowan became the all-time assists leader in the rally scoring era (since 2001). it was BYU's first home loss in the MPSF tournament since 2011, snapping a 12 game win streak.

Well, the 2026 MVB season's in the books with my second favorite team - Hawaii - taking down UC Irvine in 4 sets, 15-25, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-20 in Pauley. Imua!!!

While Im happy UCLA lost to UCI, UCI got lucky with a very controversial call.
