Stanford Women's Lacrosse - Spiny_Norman - 02-17-2026

Add women's lacrosse to the list of Stanford teams ranked in the top 5 in the country. They are #3 in ESPN's ranking.

Women's lacrosse has benefitted perhaps more than any other sport from the ACC conference alignment. It has really raised the profile of the program among top players. Stanford lost in the round of 16 last year in OT to Florida, a team that made the semifinals.

For 2026, in addition to returning all of its top scorers from last season, Stanford got a very high profile transfer.

Both my kids play lacrosse so I've become a fan.  Stanford will play powerhouse BC at BC Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill on Thursday March 26.  We plan to be there so come by and say hello to the Chinese-American family in Stanford gear.

Mallory Hasselbeck (who grad transfered from BC) just got added to the player of the year watch list, joining teammates Ava Arceri and Aliya Polisky who were on the preseason watch list.  Yes. She's related.  Her father, Matt, played QB for the Seattle Seahawks.  Her addition to the team has been a big part of how the team has climbed to #2 in the rankings.

Speaking of Ms Polisky she was recently featured in the print edition of USA Lacrosse magazine about how she's apply her product design major to her sport by making a new lacrosse grip.  Unfortunately the article hasn't appeared online yet.

Stanford squeeks by #24 Duke 11-10 to remain undefeated at 8-0.  Next up is #7 Notre Dame on Saturday.

BC upset Stanford yesterday evening 11-13 in a back and forth thrilling game.  A b.s. offensive foul call against Stanford star Aliya Polisky late in the 4th ended up making the difference.  The ACC refs took away a goal that would have tied the game and put Ms. Polisky in the penalty box which allowed BC to score with us a man down.

I was pleasantly surprised at the Stanford fan turnout.  A neutral observer laxhead friend that went to MIT and wished he had accepted his spot at Stanford instead said it seemed like there were more Stanford fans there.  We were certainly louder.  Stanford fields a critical mass of players from the northeast (including #2 point scorer Mallory Hesselbeck who grad transferred from BC).  Their friends and family turned out in force.

My semi-trained eye as a lax dad is that Stanford plays too much isolation heroine ball.  It looked like middle school girls lacrosse at times.  Heroine ball is a particularly bad approach with BC's goalie Shae Dolce whose 2024 NCAA championship game performance was the best single game performance of any goalie I've ever seen in any sport with a goalie.  Rivalled only by Connor Hellebuyck during the Olympics.

Stanford plays great defense, but on the offensive side does not pass the ball around to open up better shots.  BC did a much better job at this and UNC is excellent at this especially in their execution of crossing routes.  There were a couple missed passes in give and go transition that I believe involved Miss Hesselbeck that might have led to goals if they have been playing longer together.

The future for Stanford lacrosse looks bright.  No other Stanford team benefits more from joining the ACC which plays the most competitive lacrosse.  Joining the ACC better positioned Stanford in recruiting against the strong academic schools that happen to be lacrosse powerhouses like Northwestern, Duke, Hopkins and BC (Miss Hesselbeck being a notable example).  A national championship in this sport is a matter of time.  Just not this year based on what I saw yesterday.

Thanks for sharing your observations! My (very) limited knowledge of the game was largely gained via impromptu Q&A sessions with a frosh advisee who was on the team following our advising discussions. Having a whiteboard in my office was very helpful! :-)

I am less sanguine about the LAX team's chances of winning a natty this year, but I agree that we benefit a ton from joining the ACC and should be a realistic contender for a title these next few years. It'll be a race between LAX and beach volleyball to be the next Stanford team to win their first NCAA title.

Lacrosse defeats BC in ACC quarterfinals - Bruce Wang - 04-23-2026

Stanford avenged its regular season loss to BC in an ACC tournament quarterfinal game soundly defeating BC 14-7.  Next up is Clemson who Stanford squeaked by in the regular season 10-9.  The two teams are neck and neck and swapped places in the national polls.  Should be a close game.

The HC always blows 1 or 2 games a year. I thought BC and especially Villanova were bad losses this year. Last year it was the Denver loss that prevented us from potentially hosting a NCAA game. Poor game plans.

1-5 record in the NCAAs does not bode well for future success. Also cannot retain assistant coaches.

It seems that senior Stanford goalkeeper Lucy Pearson might have something to say about that. In the 10 games that she has started this season, the team is 10-0. In the 7 games that she didn't start due to injury, the team is 4-3. Don't you think it's possible that the BC and Villanova losses were at least in part due to the absence of an all-conference GK and not all the head coach's fault?

In any case, BC was Pearson's first game back, and she seemed to me to be 100%, although you and Publius are more knowledgeable than I am.

I'm just hoping for a win vs Clemson and another crack at UNC (or Syracuse) with a healthy 1st-string GK.

I think Ella Morton played very well when Lucy was hurt. She was defensive player of the week. 

I think Villanova was definitely due to poor game planning. Offense was not prepared to attack the match up defense even though they saw the same defense at BC. No adjustments. 

Running clock against UNC. Again it was an offensive problem, not enough possessions (killed on the draw controls and too many turn overs). Did not adjust to the shooting space being called on the low defenders. To me that is coach (the lack of adjustments).

Just my opinion.

The Card were trailing by 2 late in the game. They scored 2 in a hurry at about the 2 min mark and then won the ball and scored with a behind the back shot with about 15 sec left. Clemson got a shot off but it was blocked by Stan goalie. They will play NC on Sunday for the ACC championship.

I missed the very long stretch when Stanford went from up 10-8 to down 10-12. As soon as I tuned back in, the comeback began. You're welcome, Stanford lacrosse!

Seriously, though, that was an amazing comeback, and congratulations to the players who made it happen.

Looking ahead to UNC: UNC went 22-0 last season on their way to the NCAA championship (obviously). This season, the Tar Heels, #3 RPI, are slacking at 15-1, with the lone loss to Northwestern in overtime. They defeated Stanford 18-9 two weeks ago. Time for revenge!

Beating Clemson probably gave Stanford a Top 8 seed in the NCAA tournament and a first round bye.

UNC features Chloe Humphrey who will likely become if not already the game's greatest player of all time.  She won lacrosse's Voldemort trophy last year as a frosh and will win it again this year.  Her older sister graduated from Stanford and finished her college career at UNC winning a national championship with her two younger sisters.  I hope Chloe grad transfers to Stanford.  Her talent and charisma will bring national attention to the game and then international attention in LA28.

Ashley Humphrey,who played at Stanford, is the middle sister. She set the NCAA single season assist record while at Stanford. She played two years at UNC, winning the national championship with her sisters in 2025. Ashley was a finalist for the Tewaaraton. Last season was the only season they all played together in college. 

Nicole is the oldest and Chloe is the youngest sister.
