Men's Tennis -- Spring 2026 - Papa John - 01-13-2026
I couldn't find any posts on this spring men's tennis team, so I'm starting a new thread.
According to gostanford.com, the Stanford men swept Saint Mary's on Tuesday:

As the season begins we're ranked #4. I'll leave it to the tennis experts on this board to fill in the blanks re: the team's strengths, weaknesses and potential.

Stanford played yesterday without 3 of its top players - Samir Banerjee, Kyle Kang and Nico Godsick. All 3 were important contributors to Stanford's ACC championship and the run to the national semifinals last season. They played at 1, 2 and 5 singles respectively.
Banerjee played all fall in pro events and national team events. As far as I know, he has not declared yet that he is a professional. But he has not played a match for Stanford all year.
Kang did not play at all in the fall. Godsick has not played in a Stanford match since September. I don't know what is going on with either of them. Injuries?
Stanford did bring in some talented players for this season. Alex Chang is a grad transfer from Cal where he was 2nd team all Pac 12 in 2024. He is currently Stanford's top ranked player. Freshman Jagger Leach was the #1 recruit in the country. He did not play at all in the fall for Stanford. Yesterday was his first Stanford match.
We'll see who plays as the schedule ramps up over the next few weeks.

Not to the football Rick Leach AFAIK - but his uncle is a former pro tennis player, now coach, also named Rick. His mom's Lindsay Davenport, which is more impressive, IMHO.

Not to the football Rick Leach AFAIK - but his uncle is a former pro tennis player, now coach, also named Rick. His mom's Lindsay Davenport, which is more impressive, IMHO.
Also Nico Godsick's mom is former pro Mary Joe Fernandez.

Kang, Godsick and Benerjee are all on campus. They were at the match today against SDSU though none were dressed. If they are not turning pro, I assume they are just resting since they all had a busy fall. I guess we will find out soon since the schedule gets tougher.

Thanks for the update, cardfan77. Also, all three are still listed on Stanford's roster at gostanford.com. That seems significant to me, but maybe I'm mistaken.
Oh, Stanford beat SDSU 4-1 on Thursday. LSJU won the doubles point--Rivera/Razeghi and Krupkin/Leach won while Chang/Tusher were up 5-4 when the point was clinched. In singles, #1 Chang, #3 Razeghi and #4 Leach won. #6 Anderson lost in straight sets. #2 Rivera was up 2-1 in the third set and #5 Krupkin was up 1 set but down 5-6 in the second set when their matches went unfinished.
Stanford plays at the ITA Kickoff next weekend with Utah, Oregon and Rice, all unranked, also participating. But Saturday, Jan. 31 and Sunday, Feb. 1 #12 UCLA and #19 University of Satan's Children visit.
Other matchups against currently ranked teams--as of the January 7 ITA poll--include #23 Pepperdine, #17 Duke, #5 Virginia, #25 Clemson, #1 Wake Forest (home on Friday, April 3), #9 NC State, #15 Cal.
Not that it matters but the following conferences are represented in the top 25:
ACC: 8 teams
SEC: 5
Big Ten: 5
Big 12: 4
WCC: 2
Ivy: 1

Good to know, cardfan. Of interest, Leach was playing #4 this week. If Kang, Godsick and Banerjee all play, that could push Leach off the singles lineup. Quite a statement about the strength of the team when the #1 overall freshman recruit is fighting to play singles. On the other hand, none of Banerjee, Kang and Godsick is currently ranked because they have not played enough (or any) matches.
I am anxious to see those 3 play because I think that doubles teams need to be set. Coach Goldstein may need time to play around to find the right pairings. I think we know that good doubles play can make the difference come tournament time.
Hope to see the full Stanford lineup for the ITA matches next weekend.

Utah took the doubles point vs. Stanford. Chang/Rivera and Krupkin/Leach both lost 6-7. Banerjee/Razeghi won 6-1.

Beat #3 Wake Forest tonight in the opening men's match at Arrillaga Tennis Center (the women scored the first overall win a few hours earlier).
Were down 3-0 but battled back to win 4-3 when Leach won his third set tb.
After a strong start to the season (ranked as high as #4 in early Feb.), results have been up and down for the last couple of months (ranked #25 currently). For this reason, I haven't been committed to followeing the team's progress super closely but there appears to have been a lot of shakeup in the lineup, presumably due to injuries. In particular, #1 Samir Banerjee has missed several matches and when he has played the results haven't been good (2-9 in duals). I don't think Kang has played at all either this spring.
Obviously, having an absent or limited #1 can really throw off the rest of the lineup but hopefully tonight's win can provide a spark. The lineup has potential to make a deep run when it's at full strength.

With its 4-2 win at #44 Cal on Sunday, current #17 Stanford--the next ITA poll will be released on Tuesday--secured the 4 seed for the ACC men's tennis championship in Cary, NC this week. They earned a bye through to the quarterfinals on Friday, when they will face either 13-seed Florida State (#55 nationally), 12-seed Louisville (#57) or 5-seed NC State (#26).
For those who want to watch or follow online live, be aware that Stanford's quarterfinal match will begin at 7 am Pacific time!

Stanford squeaked past Florida State 4-3 in the quarterfinals today. Alex Razhegi was again the star of the match. He teamed with Alex Chang to win the doubles point in a tie-breaker. Then he pulled out his singles match 6-3 in the 3rd set after being down 1-3.
4th seed Stanford earns a re-match against top seeded Wake Forest tomorrow at 7 am pacific.

Unfortunately, Stanford's semifinal match against defending national champion Wake Forest did not last long. Another 4-0 drubbing. Wake Forest defeated UVA to win the ACC tournament.
Now we wait for the announcement of the NCAA tournament bracket, which, according to gostanford.com, is Monday, April 27 at 2 p.m. PT on NCAA.com.
The tournament itself isn't until mid-May.

NCAA announced the bracket today. Stanford travels to College Station, TX to face Penn in a 1st round match. The winner likely plays #11 overall seed Texas A&M. This would place Stanford as the 22nd ranked team in the country, a drop from its ITA ranking of 18th. Looks like UCLA beat out Stanford for that spot as they play as the overall 18th seed in a regional in San Diego.

I don’t think you have a true S Curve after the Top 16 seeds and geography plays an outsized role here. They likely prioritized UCLA to San Diego as Stanford would fly to either San Diego or College Station regardless. It’s hard to judge how things shook out for the committee outside of the top 16 seeds.

Stanford lost the doubles point to Penn in a tiebreaker. But the team came back with 4 consecutive singles win to beat the Quakers 4-1. Round of 32 match tomorrow, probably vs. host Texas A&M.
