Let's hope TP can get Stanford Football out of the toilet bowl and into a New Year's Day bowl.

Marty, why the exclamation point? Surely you can't be truly excited? From where I sit, this is a major disappointment. First Taylor, then Pritchard. Color me unimpressed, exclamation point. So much for the momentum that started to build up after the Big Game win.

"Winning in college football today requires a leader of men who can build and motivate teams, recruit future stars, and develop and connect with talent,” said Luck. “Tavita Pritchard is exactly the right head coach at the right time to help us build on the foundation of this season and lead Stanford football to its next great era. Coach Pritchard is a culture builder, a teacher of football of the highest caliber, and a humble yet determined servant leader who is committed to the success of Stanford’s student-athletes. I could not be more excited to welcome Tavita, Caroline and their family back to campus.”
“Stanford is a place like no other and my family and I are full of gratitude to be returning home in every sense of the word,” said Pritchard. “I have a clear vision of the hard work, brotherhood and tenacity it will take to build a championship Stanford football program. I cannot wait to partner with Andrew and begin working with the best student-athletes in the world to achieve excellence on and off the field.”

Now, let's see what kind of a staff TP and AL can assemble.

This is the key, of course, but in Luck I trust.

Disappointing and uninspiring. This is the best they could do?

checks my boxes for strong cultural leader, understands stanford, and high energy. Fails to check my box on clear history of strong success directly attributable to him.
ok, staff building time! Any chance our DC will be retained?

Cautiously optimistic. If Tavita had some head coaching experience. I would be more enthusiastic about the hire.
He checks many of the boxes in terms of knowing the school, its culture, the people, facilities, recruiting landscape, etc.
I thought he was the favorite to be offered the job because of his connection to Andrew, but thought there's more qualified coaches out there we should be making a priority.
Here's hoping for the best as I trust Andrew, but don't want this to be an early 10s team reunion amongst friends.

Less money for the coach is more money for NIL.
The lack of recent success by many big-money coaches indicates emphasis on the players is key.
Pritchard won't outshine the players.

IMO this will tell the tale. Under "normal" circumstances the OC and DC would have resumes that would be at least equal to Tavita's and arguable better, experience wise. It may be that the intention is to retain the coaching staff on the defensive side of the ball, or at least a lot of it. On the offensive side, who will want the job? This could be quite "interesting" to say the least. Tavita doesn't exactly have a "coaching tree" that can be mined for candidates. Whoever is hired as assistants will have to go out there and recruit. They will have to explain to recruits why they should play for a coach who has never been a head coach and has never "won anything" in the NFL. That may not be so easy. We shall see, but my initial gut feel is hiring a good staff will not be easy.

I am just gobsmacked by this decision. Had to look at his Wikipedia page to see if maybe there was something impressive in his background which I was unaware of. Nope! He was offensive coordinator at Stanford for the final four disastrous years of the David Shaw reign. My recollection is there were a ton of complaints about his offense on this very board. And now they've made him head coach? Why?!? Because he's buddies with Andrew Luck?

Note that Tavita will join Stanford after his game at Denver Sunday night.
A lot of candidates could not start so quickly.

Because you and your fellow doomsayers know so much more about Stanford football than Andrew Luck…

If Luck wanted to re-ignite the fan base, hiring a crony isn't the way to do it, especially a crony who helped guide the team to its longest stretch of losing seasons in the program's history. Seems like a very good guy, and I'll root for him with reckless abandon, but it doesn't feel like a $50 million 'we mean business now' hire. At all. Prove me wrong TP!
