Stanford Women's Tennis 2025-26 - Lorcan - 09-22-2025
The Women's Tennis Season has kicked off with ITA All-American Championships this week. I was hoping that Colorado Tree would provide us with an in depth look at the tournament - and perhaps they'll show up to dazzle us with their knowledge.
Stanford has a quartet that are kicking off in the Qualifying for the Main Draw - led by #58 Caroline Driscoll, #83 Monika Ekstrand, #90 Alyssa Ahn, #98 Tianmei Wang. Valerie Glozman is presumably in the main draw. The first round of qualifying is under way, and the results are:

I think the next round sees....us face mostly unranked foes - so hopefully we keep marching. On paper, these all look like winnable matches, but early season has a way of being dangerous - and Maralgoo Cogsomjav just trounced #56 Gianna Oboniye 6-4 6-1 - so Ahn has a tough match ahead.

As for doubles, it looks like we don't have an entry in the doubles for All-Americans - which is an oddity. We'll have to wait and see how the main draw shakes out to see if there's any Stanford interest in there.

A mixed bag today - disappointed that Driscoll couldn't find her way through - but that's why the matches are played. Kamper played #1 for Utah last year - and came through pre-qualifying so has more matches under her belt. Abbas was #5 for UNC Charlotte last year - but is having herself a nice start to the fall as she's strolled through five matches en route to the main draw as she started in pre-qualifying as well.

The main draw gets going tomorrow...
Valerie Glozman joins the fray as the 4th seed, and she opens against unranked Maria de la Paz Alberto - who marched all the way from pre-qualifying to the main draw - seems to be a few of those and there's something to be said about getting some matches under your belt.
Monika Ekstrand gets a brutal draw and lines up opposite third seeded Luciana Perry of Ohio State.
Alyssa Ahn gets a decent draw against #25 Kate Fakih, with familiar foe #42 Eleana Yu (Duke) or #21 Carmen Andreea Herea (Texas) looming in R2.
The main draw for doubles is out, and it confirms no Stanford rooting interest there. I wonder why - surely we should've been able to get a doubles team in somewhere.

It's been a wild start to the ITA All Americans as #1 DJ Bennett (Auburn) gets bundled out in the first round by Savannah Dada-Mascoll of Appalachian State. Emma Kamper, conqueror of Driscoll, just knocked off #8 Theadora Rabman (UNC). #9 Mia Kupres of TAMU was also bundled out.

Ahn avoids a matchup with Eleana Yu, as Yu fell 6-3 6-2 to Herea (Texas).

It's been an interesting few days of results - Alyssa Ahn beat Valery Gynina of Florida in the consolation, before falling to another gator - Gabia Paskauskas in the next round.
Ekstrand withdrew injured after beating Kate Fakih.
That said, the story of the tournament for Stanford is Valerie Glozman. She was down a set against Cal's Mao Mushika - but battled back to win 3-6 7-5 6-3. The quarterfinals was a dominant show for Glozman as USC's Charney was swept aside 6-0 6-2. It's worth noting that per Stanford Twitter, Glozman is the first Stanford semifinalist at ITA All Americans since.........Hilary Barte who went the distance (!!!) in 2010.
That's an incredible stat given some of the quality players we've had come through Stanford in that span - but I can imagine that it was a big ask for those who won a team championship to then go on a tear in the individual tournament as this used to be held right after the team championships.Next up, Valerie has the chance to exact some revenge on Ohio State by knocking out #11 Teah Chavez.
On the opposite half of the draw, the main draw conquerors of Ekstrand and Ahn are battling for a spot in the finals as Luciana Perry (OSU) and Carmen Herea (Texas) meet.

Glozman won the semifinals yesterday against Teah Chavez from Ohio St 6-3, 6-2. She plays in the finals today against another sophomore, Carmen Herea, from Texas. Herea took out Alyssa Ahn in the second round. Herea got a little bit lucky in that #2 seed Brantmeier from UNC pulled out due to injury in the quarterfinals. However, Herea did beat the #3 seed Luciana Perry from Ohio St in the semis in 3 sets. Ohio St had a very good showing with two in the semis.

It is - this is one of the main qualifying tournaments for the ITA Singles Championships. Glozman and the other 7 quarterfinalists are now automatic entries to the NCAA Championship. Everyone else will need to go through Regional Qualifying Tournaments, the Sectional Qualifying Tournaments, or the Conference Qualifying Tournaments that are hosted over the next few weeks. Plenty of opportunities for Ahn, Ekstrand, Driscoll, and Wang to qualify.

We'll see regional championships kick off this weekend, with players attempting to qualify for the individual NCAA championship.
I'm interested to see how our doubles do this tournament given our absence at ITA All Americans. It looks like we have......

Shaffer/Sun are an unseeded pair.
We'll know more on draws later this week - but this tournament takes place at Berkeley for anyone interested in getting a glimpse of our team.

Do we know what happened to Hui? Turning pro? Taking a leave?
Looks like Samir Banerjee on the men’s is turning pro, although still on the roster.

We do not - although someone closer to the program than I may be able to guess. I'd say given the lack of news, Hui is probably dealing with an injury or has moved on from tennis. She's not played any pro tournaments nor has she shown up as a transfer to somewhere else. Given her injury plagued year last year, I'd assume she's taking time off to heal.

She signed with Octagon in late September. So I think she just moved on from Stanford tennis, which is unfortunate.
Such a shame her class turned out to be a bust - so much promise when Hui and Yu signed with Stanford.

Alright - time for a check-in to what's going on at regionals. A mixed bag of results for Stanford thus far - with only two players left alive in Singles as I begin writing this (Driscoll lost by the time I finished writing). First, Valerie Glozman withdrew as she had no reason to play regionals as she's already qualified for fall nationals. First, we'll take a look at the singles results so far:

It's a mixed bag here.
Let's start with Ekstrand who was seeded fourth. It's hard coming into a regional like this on Cal's home courts - but really, given that Naomi Xu played #6 for Cal last season, this should've been a winnable match. It appears that Xu for Cal is much improved this season, given that she just knocked off Washington's #1 Matsuda in the quarters in dominating fashion. As to Emma Sun - it's good to see her come through qualifying and be seemingly healthy - that said - she lost to Sophie Hernandez who memorably clinched for Cal in the Big Slam last year against Shaffer despite not playing in most of Cal's duals last year.
It's hard to read into Myoung and Wang's results here. Myoung won what she was supposed to, and then lost her match to Washington's Matsuda who was the #6 seed. The same could be said for Wang - but I'd really liked to have seen Wang beat Jacobs. That said, Jacobs is currently battling it out in a third set with the top seed, Mushika (Cal). Those two results though, give me hope that we have a solid top 6 that can compete against most teams.
It's been a disappointing start to the season for Driscoll. She somehow ended up with the #2 seed here, but lost to Cal's #4 from last year Berta Passola Folch. Again, coming against Cal on their home court it's a tough match - but these are absolutely the kind of matches that we want to see Driscoll win. For Cal, they're looking strong with Mao Mushika continuing to lead the way - at this juncture - there's a chance that it's three Golden Bears versus Ahn for the title.
Alyssa Ahn has done what is expected of her - she's come through the draw relatively unscathed despite an early scare. She beat Washington's #2 Reece Carter in dominant fashion, and now has the chance to avenge Driscoll in the semifinals against Passola Folch.
Let's talk doubles....
Emma Sun and Moragn Shaffer teamed up to win a round before running into Irene Riva/Lou Baudouin of Sacramento State. They dropped that match 8-2 - but Sacramento State dispatched the top seeds from Washington in the next round.
Glozman and Ekstrand have advanced as expected - and have a tough quarterfinal against Cal's Mushika and Greco Iucchina tomorrow.
Driscoll and Ahn play Washington's #2 pair in the quarters - we'll see how they do.
Myoung and Wang beat a pair from Gonzaga and Fresno State before falling to Washington's #3 pair of Reece Carter and Jermine Sherif in a tiebreaker.

Alyssa Ahn does indeed avenge Caroline Driscoll, and moves comfortably into the finals. A Golden Bear awaits - but we'll have to wait until tomorrow to figure out who. Mushika and Xu will play tomorrow morning as they focused on getting doubles finished today.

Correct. This was likely our best opportunity to have a third qualifier - but the next chance comes with ITA Sectional Tournament up in Seattle starting November 6th. There will be a last and outside chance through Conference Masters - but it's unclear to me how a Stanford player would be nominated for such a tournament.
