Stanford AD Bob Bowlsby is quoted.
In 2004, on the heels of his football program’s third consecutive top-10 finish and second shared Big Ten title, Iowa athletic director Bob Bowlsby reluctantly chose to make Kirk Ferentz one of college football’s highest-paid coaches rather than lose him to a traditional power or the NFL.
“I don’t know that a football coach should be making five times what a university president makes,” Bowlsby, who later served as Big 12 commissioner for 11 years, said at the time. “But the only thing worse than being in the arms race is not being in the arms race.”

CY24 CY23 Troy Taylor comp was 1.5x MTL's comp ($2.8m vs $1.7m or ~$2.7m if you add together Levin and MTL comp in CY24 which probably overstates what the comp for the "president" given Levin was GSB dean for much of the year), in
CY23 CY22 Shaw made $7.1m vs MTL at $2.4m, so the $2.4m is probably a better compare of "president comp" to Taylor's comp of $2.8m in
2024 2023. I don't see Stanford's football coach comp being 5x the president's comp ($10m-$12m/year) anytime soon

it appears that Ferentz's comp is ~$7m currently (about what Shaw was paid in
CY23 CY22)

so about 8.5x the University of Iowa president
Quote:University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson's base salary will be $825,000 in the upcoming academic year, up nearly $70,000 from the year prior.

I think the salary numbers for Stanford are for CY23. The 990 requests salary numbers for the CY ending within the fiscal year. Stanford's 990 filed this year was for FY24 ending 8/31/24. Stanford FY25 has not yet ended; 6 more days to go. The FY25 990 filed next year will contain the CY24 salaries.

you are correct but it doesn't really change the story/numbers.
