Any sense of who is winning the starting QB job?

My guess is that if Brown doesn't start this year, he is in the transfer pool. That complicates the decision.

Seems like it's Gulbranson for now

RE: Any whispers re QB1? - Spiny_Norman - 08-12-2025

Elijah Brown looked like a deer in headlights when Daniels was injured last year. Now with a year of experience and perhaps better coaching, he still is not the guy to lead the team, according to the coaches (assuming that Thamel's report is accurate). Now this might be a statement by the coaches that they favor experience and none of the candidates has more of it than Gulbranson. But I think many were hoping that Brown could have upped his game and taken ownership of the offense. He still may not be ready.

Kroner at SF Chron said that ex-Beaver Gulbranson is clearly the guy.

Elijah Brown, 4* out of Mater Dei -- I think this is more evidence that whatever TT was doing to develop his QBs was not working at all.

You’re telling me playing a true frosh QB coming back from a throwing hand injury, with pins still in there, is bad for his development? Who knew?

The implication that TT actually wanted to develop his QBs is funny too (Bear Bachmeier was promised the starting job the second he matriculated, which is why he committed in the first place and subsequently left).

RE: Any whispers re QB1? - SkiBum80 - 08-13-2025

I don't conclude much from the past couple years, as far as how good the potential of the QB's now on the team.
Our OLine was often overmatched and not looking great.
Our running game wasn't great, and once down in a game, the opponents D could just tee up on our having to pass.
Sometimes the OLine gave great pass protection, and when you looked at the replay closer, you saw none of our receivers got open.
We coulda had Andrew Luck in there and wondering how come he wasn't looking very good.
If the OLine is better this year, if the running game (using RB's) is better this year, if receivers get open better this year, then I think a couple QB's may "miraculously" look better this year.

No, I'm saying that a highly-touted QB with two years under his belt at a program wasn't able to win the job against a fifth-yr (RS) transfer from a different program.  Maybe I'm being unfair, but it feels like AD didn't improve as a QB from two seasons ago to last season, and EB didn't win the job.  If Bear was promised the starting job his freshman year, that's another data point where TT projected Bear to be better than EB this fall, and that's mind-boggling.  Coaching malpractice?  From this uninformed observer, maybe.

To Gulbranson's credit, he was smart enough to get into Stanford, and I need to respect that w.r.t. his decision-making ability and playbook learning ability.  He's played four years of D1 ball, and that does give him an edge over EB.  I just feel bad for EB, but maybe Gulbranson is that good?

Guess you could say that since 2019, Stanford Football has been a lost cause. A shambles of historic proportion. Just pitiful (scroll to second commercial in this clip where a silent observer says it all: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvSSPy-EA3I). The whole clip is legendary.

And whatever one thinks of Miller Hi Life, particularly and as someone who drank A LOT of Strohs and Natty Bo in college so who am I to judge really, worrying about keeping players out of the portal at the expense of playing better players (whatever they are being paid), is a great way to lose a lot of games.

You actually can remember what you drank in college?  That is impressive, be sure to list that on your Linkedin profile.

Based upon my disposal income during college Strohs was very high end.

Strohs was our choice too. In 1988 I think it was $20 for a 1/2 keg or maybe it was a 1/4 keg???

Oregon State was something like 28 - 24 the last 4 years. Gulbranson had a bit better record than that in the games he started. At the moment, I will take QB with a winning record at a Power 5 team versus a potentially good QB who has never started a game at that level. As far as I am concerned we need to be doing everything we can to Win Now.

The guys down the hall from me in Stern made their own beer and managed to drink some of it.  I spent a lot of time elsewhere, studying in a brewery was not easy, they were always trying to give me free samples.

You haven't scraped bottom until you've had Brown Derby.

This was a beer out of Humboldt County, specifically Eureka. Very popular immediately post-Prohibition, it was Safeway's generic beer brand designed to compete with Budweister, Miller, Coors, etc. The can design looked so much like the famed Brown Derby restaurant in Hollywood, that the restaurant owners sued and won.

Our first really big party in college, we bought two cases of Heineken and ten cases of Brown Derby. Every attendee got a Heineken for their first cup, when they returned, we'd refill it under the bar with the Brown Derby can out of sight and put an empty Heineken bottle on the bar next to it -- on the general theory that college kids are unsophisticated drinkers and wouldn't notice. A few noticed, but they were college kids, so they just shrugged.

Brown Derby died an unlamented death in 1988, right when American beer tastes started to swim upstream and the craft beer movement really took hold. It was the year my personal favorite beer company, North Coast Brewing Company, was founded. 13 beers, two seasonal ales, and four limited edition barrel-style beers. Their best known labels are Old Rasputin, Scrimshaw, and Brother Thelonius but my personal flavorite is their Red Seal Ale. Little tough to find, but worth it.

Gallup says the percentage of American adults that drink alcohol has dropped to 54% (it as 67% a few years ago). We reprobates are disappearing...

Back in the late 1980's a buddy would collect $5 from everyone and buy as much beer as he could from the Safeway in Menlo Park for a "cheap beer tasting contest".

Usually we got Mickey's Big Mouth or a brand called Red White & Blue, which was an even-lesser cousin of Pabst Blue Ribbon. But when we were feeling upscale we'd get the newly introduced Pete's Wicked Ale. I really liked their recipe in the late 1980's but the taste seemed to change when the company expanded and went national.
