OT: Japanese Baseball & Stanford - Griffins78 - 03-16-2025

With Rintaro Sasaki slugging 2 HRs yesterday to validate that the Japanese baseball impact on baseball in the Little Leagues and Major Leagues has now come to College Baseball, starting here at Stanford, it was exciting to learn there’s a full circle moment occurring

With a lot of attention on the Dodgers & Cubs traveling to Japan for the Tokyo Series, MLB wrote this article, “Japan's iconic cheer squads? You can thank college football” which credits the historic trip of Waseda University’s baseball team to STANFORD UNIVERSITY with a link to an article in the May 1, 1905 Stanford Daily, “Stanford defeats Waseda,” Mind blown!

Personally, I always thought their cheering was adopted from professional soccer clubs but to read that the Stanford Band and fans were the genesis is crazy. Of course it has evolved over the 100 years in its own way; but I would love to see that kind of fandom and cheering boomerang back to where it was originally inspired.

Here’s a YouTube video called, “Baseball Around the World: Japan” which mentions Stanford and led me to research it.
