Elyse Ngenda added 11/18/25
WBB roster by year

With new rules going into effect next year the roster limit will be 15 with no walk-ons above that allowed.
And thank you, BostonCard!

So, based on this, what do we need for next year's class? We'll have three spots, plus any additional spots opened up by attrition.

Starting next year, I believe that Stanford can sign as many players as they are able. No scholarship limit.

However the roster limit is 15

Is this Harriel's last year? She'll be a RS senior next year. Is Papadaki a walk-on?
RE: Class of 2026+ -
BobK - 11-14-2024
Given we have 14 I’m sure no one is a walk on. Papi never was a walk on
Next year the roster limit is 15.

Per Heather Oesterle at the last chalk talk, Lauren Green was originally a walk on, but she was given a scholarship -- apparently with the understanding that when the team needed the roster slot, she would be gone. She will not be back next year since we have 5 commits and need the slot to be able to fit them to the roster.

Roster limits and scholarship limits of course don't inherently have to be the same, so discussions are complicated especially when we don't know all the current rules or what changes are coming.
What does the roster limit of 15 that Bob mentions mean exactly and who sets it? I seem to recall in the past there was a 15 player limit set by the Pac-12 conference that applied to the travel squad. So in theory at least (if players were willing), you could have more than 15 for home games, but only 15 could travel to road games. I definitely don't know if today's roster limit rule is the same.
14 minus the 2 who will be out of eligibility plus the 5 signees is 17, so a limit of some kind at 15 obviously is a concern.
On scholarship limits, I believe Stanford WBB has 15 endowed scholarships. To give more (if allowed) the program would have to find additional money. Not to say that couldn't be done.
Also on the scholarship topic: (1) I recall hearing that Green (originally a walk on) only has a scholarship year by year, not guaranteed though her senior year, as WBB fan just posted. That would still leave us at 16 if everyone with eligibility returns. (2) Tara's policy was always that a 5th year isn't guaranteed to someone who redshirts. I remember Ruef was prepared to walk on for her 5th year if a scholarship hadn't opened up for her. Here too I'm sure Kate would love to bring back Harriel next year if she wants to stay and it's feasible, but for now from the fan point of view it looks doubtful.
I kind of hate discussing things like this because I want to be super careful not to offend anyone. I'd always like to see everyone back and on scholarship! At the last WBB banquet, I was seated at a table with Lauren Green and her family. She and her whole family are such sweet people!

Well said. Green has been a great teammate and even with limited playing time, she seems to have a great attitude and is beloved by her fellow teammates. I get the sense Harriel is aware and treating this as her last season at Stanford. She has had social media posts mentioning this as her senior season. If she was planning to return, I’m not sure that would be the case. Plus with todays world of the transfer portal, a spot or two could still open up after the season so you never know what could happen

Here's an article on the new roster and scholarship limits for D1:
https://www.ncsasports.org/blog/ncaa-scholarship-roster-limits-2024
In short:
Teams will have new roster limits that cannot be exceeded with walk-ons.
Every athlete on a roster is eligible for a full or partial scholarship.
Not every athlete on a roster must have a scholarship.
Every sport is allowed to offer partial scholarships.
This is the result of several lawsuits.
Men's basketball roster limit will increase from 13 to 15.
Women's basketball roster limit will remain at 15.
Women's volleyball roster limit will increase from 12 to 18.

How will Title IX be affected? Will a school still have to balance the number of scholarships for men and women?

It looks like yes, they will.
from
https://www.ussportsscholarships.com/ncaa-roster-limits-scholarships/
"Title IX compliance remains a paramount issue for all athletic departments: Scholarships must be set according to male-female enrollment ratios, according to federal law. Should football or baseball programs provide scholarships up to the roster limit, they must be offset by providing the same number of additional scholarships (42.3) for female sports or reducing scholarships from the pool of other men’s sports. That could lead to some campuses eliminating men’s sports or perhaps adding new women’s teams. But departments are not required to fill every scholarship. Like in baseball or wrestling, scholarships can be split in every sport moving forward, which could limit the Title IX impact."

Hopefully returning for season 26-27 are:
SF - OGDEN 6'1
PF/SF - PETERSON 6'3
PF - AGARA 6'2
PF - EZIKE 6'2
PF - STEVENSON 6'2
PF/C - ESCHMEYER 6'5
PF/C - SOMFAI 6'4
C - UMEH 6'4
SG - AMBORN 6'1
SG/PG - CLARDY 5'10
PG - SWAIN 5'10
PG - IJIWOYE 5'6
Stanford suddenly has an abundance of post players. I remember back in April of this year
that we were all concerned that, with the departure of BRINK and transfer of IRIAFEN,
Stanford will only have AGARA, DEMETRE and incomng freshmen UMEH and PETERSON
as possible post players, but with DEMETRE and PETERSON being more like stretch forwards.
Then, STEVENSON transfers in, and Stanford acquires three legit post players
SOMFAI, ESCHMEYER and EZIKE from the Class of 2025.
Given that, Stanford needs to get two SF/SG types of players and another PG
from the Class of 2026.
