WBB: Stanford 89 Gonzaga 58 - 81alum - 11-08-2024

Preview:

Stanford hosts Gonzaga on Sunday at noon. This is also the occasion that the court gets named for Tara, so I expect a big crowd on hand.

Gonzaga, like Stanford, is getting votes but falls just outside the top 25 in both polls. They have a superb team with excellent returners, a Uconn transfer, and a freshman sensation.

Evonne Ejim is back for a 5th year and is on a bunch of national award lists. She is a 6’1” forward who has given us fits in the past. Last year she scored 27 points against us. A little undersized, she is nevertheless nimble, strong, and accurate from both long range and close in.  One of those players who perhaps can be contained but never shut down.

Ines Bettencourt may be a familiar name to you. This 5’9” Portuguese guard transferred in to Gonzaga from Uconn. Maybe she could not be a starter at Uconn given a certain other player there, but she is Gonzaga’s starting point guard and had 16 points and 5 assists for them in their opener vs. Montana.  Gonzaga graduated the Truong twins and Bettencourt is taking up a lot of that slack.

Maud Huijbens is a 6’3” grad student forward with loads of experience (Dutch), and 6’2” guard Ester Little (English) adds to a relatively tall and very, very experienced team.

Gonzaga has been giving 6 players double digit minutes, but perhaps the most notable one not yet mentioned is freshman guard, 5’8” Allie Turner. In her college debut, Turner led the team in scoring (off the bench) with 18 points, including 5/8 from three point range.

In short, Gonzaga has experience, height, a disciplined offense, and now has a supercharged Uconn transfer and a freshman phenom to throw into the mix. They are always extremely well prepared, and given that they beat us quite easily last year they will come into Maples with confidence. I fully expect Gonzaga to be a ranked team and an NCAA tournament team this year.  This will be a true test to see how much progress we have made at the beginning of the Kate Paye era.

There's also a feel-good story for Gonzaga as their coach, Lisa Fortier, was diagnosed with breast cancer in the spring, went through treatment and was recently able to ring the bell signifying she is cancer-free. Best wishes for Coach Fortier.

Thanks, 81Alum. Another great preview, very much appreciated

ESPN Analytics gives us a 75.4% chance of winning this game.  I'm surprised we are favored by that much.

After reading that review, I'm surprised we are favored at all.
(Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the review, but it makes them sound like Godzilla,)

Hah!  This is my nature, always looking at the opposition though their most favorable light.  An old habit that protects me from potential disappointment.  I do think that playing at home instead of in the dog pound makes an important difference in our favor.  Our team played as if it were intimidated last year--and this was compounded by foul trouble and ill health.  We have had enough things going well for our young team this year that I think we may be a harder team to defend than we were last year.  So I would give us better than 50/50 odds to win.  But Gonzaga is one of the better teams on our schedule.

And I'm always wary of the "Sunday afternoon on ESPN" jinx that has bitten us a few times.

81alum: IMO, that's a pretty nebulous basis for concluding that the likelihood of a Cardinal W is more than 50%. Do you not think that the Bulldogs are likely to defend both our 3-point shooting and occasional drives to the hoop much better than the 2 previous teams did?

Of course they are.  A Fortier team always defends reasonably well, and they have a very big advantage compared to those other two teams of having seen two games on film--not to mention their skill levels which are obviously higher.  But we blew out the last two teams, and the question is not whether we can blow out Gonzaga but merely win.

Last year we did not put 8 people on the floor who were making three point shots.  With Brink going out of that game early, Gonzaga could focus their entire defense on Kiki and Jump.  They will not be able to narrowly focus tomorrow.  There was also a major psychological hurdle when we played in what may be the most hostile venue in the nation.  I wish Maples gave us the same advantage as the dog pound gives Gonzaga, but at least our venue---hopefully stuffed with enthusiastic fans who will come out to honor Tara--will be mildly positive as compared with the rabid sell-outs at Gonzaga.  Tara (or maybe it was an assistant at a chalk talk?) said that several of our players had "deer in the headlights" looks about them during that game.  I doubt that will be the case tomorrow.

The biggest question to me is how we defend Ejim.  The game may hinge on how successful we are.  I think (but obviously don't know) that it will have to be Agara on her.  I do not believe Demetre has the quickness to defend her, and the other guards lack the size or versatility.  If Agara gets into foul trouble then we will have a major match up problem.  But if Agara can make Ejim really work for her points then I think our offense can score enough to outpace Gonzaga.  Maybe we rotate someone to give help at times and double team her.

Here is another interesting point.  Last year, Tess Heal played Gonzaga twice for Santa Clara.  Santa Clara badly lost both games, but Tess was a bright spot.  In the second game she scored 22 points on 8/16 shooting, with 0 three pointers.  She drove a lot and got 8 free throws.  She knows this opposition well.  Look for her to play a lot and perform well.

Can we get some Cardinal red T-shirts made?

As of this morning, Stanford is #2 in the nation in 3pt % with one of the largest Ns (32-54).  Easter Washington is #1 with only 10 made 3s.

FEAR THE THREE indeed.

I guess Eastern Washington played a late game last night. The stats are updated and Stanford is first now, with EW still third at 18 of 33.

That’s a great idea. The magic continues…  manifesting only good positive vibes.

By the way M T, I didn’t see your PM a while back and apologize. I did finally reply.
