WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Let's go and finally get that crown.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Stanford's back four looks very adventuresome forward so far. Very good sign, though we have to be wary of leaving space behind. Looked like the holding midfielder was a bit slow to slide into the vacated space a couple of times.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Duke is leaving a lot of open space in this game because of their 4-3-3. There'll be goals in this game.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

#2 Camille Levin, the right fullback for Stanford, has been spectacular bombing forward. We need comparable width on the left side.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

A series of substitutions puts Levin at central midfield. I'm not sure I approve.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Halftime with no score. By and large Stanford had the better of the run of play, but Duke had its moments. The Stanford coach seems fixated on getting his outside backs forward in his halftime interview, which makes his decision to move Levin to central midfield all the more curious. But I do agree with him: there needs to be that thrust on both sides of the field from the fullbacks to stretch the game horizontally.

Neither Taylor nor Noyola is playing well; lots of missed first touches, lots of "energy conserving."  As a keeper, I hate watching midfielders do the slow jog back toward the center of the field as the ball goes up the flanks that Teresa seems to be employing. OTOH, she had the best shot on frame of the half, forcing a tip over the bar by the Duke keeper.

Duke's size is a major issue, especially against Noyola, Quon and Levin, as well as against Taylor and Ubogagu up front.  Stanford's getting bodied off the ball pretty regularly.

Finally, if this match comes down to a referee's decision, I'll be really upset.  Chioma was fouled going into the area - after having beat her defender on the left side of the box, she cut toward the endline and pushed the ball forward.  The beaten defender dove at her, preventing her from running on to the ball by sticking an arm in her stomach while falling down.  No grab that I saw on the replay, but it was 2 yards inside the area, and did prevent a fairly solid scoring chance.

Only a bit lucky, I'd argue. The second chance, that was skied over the bar, was a very difficult angle. And, at any rate, Duke didn't really generate chances aside from set pieces and mistakes. That can win games, but not a lot of them.

Stanford generated chances from the run of play. That's the more durable path to success. Not to say this is a guarantee--soccer history is full of flukish goals leading to victory--but Stanford was the better team in the first half and outclassed Duke in technical ability by a good margin. If they make adjustments they should win this.

Here's what I'd do:
1) figure out if I can get push from the fullbacks on both sides of the field (move Levin back to right back)
2) pressure Duke heavily up the field. Their forwards and midfielders have fairly good technical skills; their back four doesn't. Pressure extensively and they'll be smothered.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Well, Radcliffe moved Levin back to right back and Stanford's pressuring heavily in Duke's half of the field. Let me just pat my back a bit there...

gooooolllll!!!!!

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL

Sustained dominance converts to goal. Simple stuff. Great cross from Levin to Noyola.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - Fuzzy Dunlop - 12-04-2011

That is an amazing statistic to me -- no losses in 5 years when scoring a goal.  That has to be a record, right?

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Duke's pressuring up the field more. If Stanford's back four can adapt, there will be acres of space available to score...more goals.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - Canalejas - 12-04-2011

We've had some good fortune in the last few minutes.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - fullmetal - 12-04-2011

For those of us without access to the game--what does that mean?!? :p

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

Stanford has become far more reactive. We have much more technical ability than they do and we're not taking advantage of it. Get the ball into Duke's half, possess the ball, and pressure the hell out of their back four when we don't.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - washingtonismoney - 12-04-2011

#27 has had a weak game. Not trying to be overly harsh, but I don't know what she's doing out there.

I don't watch a lot of Stanford's women's soccer (maybe with the Pac-12 network I'll get more of an opportunity?), but Radcliffe strikes me as weak tactically in-game.

Re: WSocc Champ Game: Stanford-Duke - Roberton3 - 12-04-2011

Playing too defensively here.  Need to counterattack more aggressively.
