ACC football - needle - 08-29-2024

With just under seven minutes left in the second quarter, Wake Forest is *behind* by three points 7-10 to North Carolina A&T, an HBCU that competes in the the Colonial conference and the FCS playoff (though the team hasn't made the FCS playoff since 2016). Wake entered the game favored by 33.5 points!

With five seconds left in the first quarter, FCS Western Carolina leads by a touchdown over an NC State team ranked 24th in the pre-season AP poll! NC State entered the game favored by 33.5 points.

UPDATE: Wake leads at the half, 17-10.

UPDATE #2: The Wake and NC A&T game has turned into a blowout, as expected by the prognosticators. Wake leads 38-10 after three quarters. If you're interested in watching a good football game, check out NC State-Western Carolina. NC State's QB is Grayson McCall, who was a G5 star at Coastal Carolina before deciding to transfer to NC State for his final season of CFB eligibility. But McCall has not looked great, throwing an interception and another pass that should have been picked, while Western Carolina looks like a good FCS team on both sides of the ball. NC State leads 17-14 with just under 6 minutes left in the third quarter. It will be a close game at the end, I think.

FINAL UPDATE: While Western Carolina had a fourth-quarter lead and, much later, attempted a field goal with under five minutes that would have cut NC State's lead to 7, the kicker missed. NC State promptly raced to an insurmountable lead. Whatever you thought of NC State before tonight's game, I'd keep that thought. They showed enough talent, including with their QB McCall, to think they might be a legit top 25 team. But they also had some difficulty running the ball, stats not withstanding, and McCall did not have four quarters of good play. Final score: NC State 38-21.

Even good teams need some time to get going at the start of the season, I guess.  Interesting phenomenon.  Or maybe it was also coaching adjustments as the games wore on.

RE: ACC football - Mick - 09-09-2024

This doesn't deserve its own thread, but Cal's non-conference victory over Auburn caught some attention from Top 25 voters. They received votes in both polls, which would place them 40th in the AP and T41st in the AFCA polls.

Four ACC teams are ranked in the AP top-25 this week, with Miami at No. 10, Louisville No. 19, Clemson No. 22 and Boston College No. 24. Georgia Tech dropped out after losing to Syracuse, which is just outside the top-25 at what would be No. 29.

Cal is a 17.5 point favorite over SDSU. I don't hold out much hope for a .500+ season for Stanford this year, but Cal has an easier time of it, with the #59-ranked strength of schedule. FSU (0-2) is listed as their most challenging opponent, and they play at FSU after SDSU. If they can get by FSU, their remaining opponents aren't particularly challenging -- they only play one other ACC team ranked ahead of them, Miami, and the game is at home after a bye week. Ore. St., NC St., Syracuse and the good guys round out their home schedule, and SMU, Wake Forest and Pittsburgh are their remaining road opponents.

Not that it will happen, but it would be interesting if Cal won the ACC. The reactions in Tallahassee, Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Clemson would be most entertaining, given their opposition to Stanford and Cal joining their precious conference.

RE: ACC football - msqueri - 09-09-2024

I’d be tickled if Cal won the ACC but no, I don’t expect it to happen either. Wilcox has been there a long time now and he’s never had a top 40 team. Mediocrity personified. Eight wins would be a great result for them. They are not capable of making the playoff.

RE: ACC football - martyup - 09-09-2024

The big question is, will there be a Pac-12 Championship game.  Maybe the Beavers and Cougars should play in the Abandoned Bowl.

RE: ACC football - jacket3ree - 09-09-2024

Cal is clearly superior to Stanford this season, just to anyone who has ever watched football. They have as much chance as anyone in the conference as being in the upper third.  Tough to know after only a handful of games, but I think this year's ACC is as 'any given Saturday' as at any time I can remember. Of course - we have a thousand teams now and nothing but unbalanced schedule difficulty. How well teams will do is largely determined by the schedulers, but they have no idea ahead of time who they are screwing over since there can be radical make overs every year through the portal. If we want a real professional system, we should go back to 8 or 10 team conferences with balanced schedules feeding a national playoff.

Maybe FSU groups its poop yet and something tells me Clemson is still near the top of the league, because yes, Georgia is just that good. NC State looked awful against the Vols but that's just one game against someone good, so who knows?  VPI losing to Vandy was eye opening unless we think Vandy is upper tier SEC. More likely, that was VPI's one non-conference gack before doing well in conference. Mostly it is all close unpredictable games like Wake-UVA and Tech-Cuse. Hard to pick and lots of .500 conference records.

If Stanford is remotely competitive against Syracuse and Clemson, that's a win of sorts. Unless they can get McCord off-rhythm or he's out, there is no way I see Stanford's offense keeping up. He looked like a 5-star Ohio State QB given time in the pocket. Clemson should destroy Stanford, and while Stanford has a history of pulling off mega upsets they shouldn't, I don't see this team capable of anything like that. Checking the schedule, Stanford might run into a win or three against ACC competition, but this feels like another 3-win season at best. I wouldn't be shocked if they don't win again this year. Glacial progress. Yay!

To answer Marty's question, the Pac-12 is only a logo on two uniforms and two fields this year. They are not an auto-qualifier to the playoff. I guess Wazoo and the Beavs are considered G5, so if one rises to the top of that heap, they can participate.

RE: ACC football - msqueri - 09-09-2024

Yeah, no, Cal has no shot at winning the ACC.

Since neither OSU nor WSU are eligible to win the MWC championship, their chances of being the non-P4 entrant into the playoffs are near zero.  Only one conference champion from the G5 is guaranteed a spot in the CFP. Therefore, the only hope for the Beavers and/or Cougars is to snag a wild card spot. Good luck with that…..

Even though FSU is 0-2 and ranked last in this list, I'd still not bet on us to beat them if we were to play this season.
That being said, what is the real Stanford team, will you please stand up?
If it is the 2nd half Cal Poly-game team, then I think we have a decent shot at beating someone ranked ahead of us on this list.

VPI.  Had to think a minute.  Virginia Polytechnic Institute.  Excellent.

Yeah, I remember them always being referred to as VPI.  I’m not sure when they started using the moniker Va. Tech.  Personally, I like VPI better.

I guess the next school on the list of name changes is MIT.  Soon, we will be referencing them by the name Ma. Tech.
