RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 10-01-2024

Stanford women's golf played its first tournament of the fall season yesterday and today at Bayonet/Blackhorse Golf Course (formerly the Fort Ord courses). The field was pretty weak. The only other preseason top 25 team in the field was San Jose State.

Stanford's lineup included 2 holdovers from last season's national championship team (Paula Martin Sampedro and Kelly Xu) and 3 frosh (Andrea Revuelta, Meja Ortengren and Nora Sundberg). Oddly, Megha Ganne sat this one out. Leigh Chien, the other frosh, played as an individual.

Stanford ran away from the field, posting an 18 stroke win. 4 of the golfers (all except Xu) finished in the top 8, led by Martin Sampedro who birdied 3 of the last 4 holes to tie for 1st.

The Cardinal have 3 more fall events - a match play event in New Mexico next week where they get to face Texas (preseason #4), the Stanford Intercollegiate in two weeks and a tournament in Hawaii at the end of the month.

To other teams, facing this Stanford squad might look like facing murderers row back in 1900's on the baseball diamond.
Of course, golf can make anyone, even the best, look silly, even comical, on any given day.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 10-20-2024

It's been a lousy weekend for Stanford sports. But one bright spot - women's golf. Stanford tied for 1st at the Stanford Intercollegiate tournament which wrapped up today.

Stanford and USC went back and forth all round, each team well beyond the rest of the field. USC, led by 2 incredible final rounds of 65 for Jasmine Koo and 63 for Catherine Park, pulled ahead on the back 9. Stanford surged back into the lead late in the round on the back of Andrea Revuelta's 4 consecutive birdies on 17, 18, 1 and 2 (she started on the 4th hole). USC closed the gap by the end of the round. Both teams finished -18. Stanford was led by Megha Ganne who finished 3rd overall with rounds of 66-72-67.

Texas made a late run to finish at -11. You can expect all 3 of these teams (Stanford, USC, Texas) to be among the contenders for a NC in May.

Stanford has 7 strong players but only 5 can play at a time. To give you an idea of Coach Walker's dilemma, frosh Leigh Chien and Nora Sundberg played the tournament as individuals. Chien finished T5th overall. Sundberg finished 12th.

Stanford closes out the fall season in Hawaii starting a week from tomorrow.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 10-20-2024

Year, player, world rank, scoring avg. to date (adjusted to a 72 par)

Jr. Ganne (24)           69.6
So. Martin (11)           70.4
Fr. Ortengren (22)     70.4
Fr. Chien (136)           70.9
Fr. Sundberg (44)      71.5
Jr. Xu (40)                 71.9
Fr. Revuelta (10)       72.4

(I have included the players’ scores in match play events.)

Note: Only eleven Stanford players ever have finished under 72.0 for a season.

I was under the impression (a feeling I get that is often wrong) that the 5 players that count each week, at least until the end of the season, are determined by in-squad competition during the week.  If so, Walker gets out of making those choices -- and this year those competitions are going to be tough!

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 10-21-2024

Perspective.

Aggregate world ranking for top five players:
Stanford            107
USC                    501
Texas                  531
UCLA                 662

Indeed, yes! Stanford team qualifying for tournaments will probably be at least as pressured as playing in the tournaments, if not more so. Imagine a scenario in which 2 All Americans from last year's national champions cannot make the top 5. It is certainly possible.

But I think that Coach Walker reserves the right to make the final decision on the lineup for regionals and then (presumably) nationals. Once Stanford advances to the postseason, they can have 6 players on the squad, though one is the alternate each round. So that only leaves one of the 7 on the sidelines.

Hulk, your other numbers from the post several above would give a world ranking in the 20s.  Are you using a different source here to get a WR in the 100s?

Aggregate, not mean. Divide by 5 for mean.

Ah, got it.  Thanks for the explanation.  /Lefty

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 10-28-2024

The official Stanford site buried the lede of the story in today's first round of the Nanea Invitational.

"The defending national champion Cardinal, starting four freshmen, have a two-stroke lead after a thirteen-under par first round performance.  . ."

And:

"Six Cardinal are in the top 12 of 59-player field."

Of possible significance, too, is that Stanford's highest-ranked player entering the season, Andrea Revuelta, broke out with only her second under-par round of the season, a three-under 70.

And worth mentioning: how is it that Stanford is hosting an event in Hawaii? Almost certainly the reason: the course, which some consider one of the country's ten best, was built (by Scotsman David Kidd of Bandon Dunes fame) for a Stanford alum, Charles Schwab.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Lorcan - 10-28-2024

It's worth noting that Kelly Xu is playing as an individual - so her score doesn't count towards our team score. She's currently sitting in fourth, at -4, only two strokes behind the three leaders who include Megha Ganne at -6. The talent on this team is incredible from the looks of it.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - M T - 10-28-2024

Could there be a reverse NIL where really good players pay the school big bucks to enhance their career, learning to become the best in preparation for their future career? That's what most of us do when we go to college.

A reverse sense for the Pay to Play

Stanford is not starting 4 freshmen in this event. It is starting only 3 (Revuelta, Chien, Ortengren). :-)

Coach Walker has shown that she can get great results from freshmen over the years (Heck, Zhang, Martin-Sampedro), but the team championships have featured matchplay prowess from upper classmen: 2015 (Stackhouse, Lee), 2022 (Krauter, Seay), 2024 (Heck). For that reason, I expect Ganne and Xu to be a big part of the lineup in the spring.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Spiny_Norman - 10-29-2024

The team was steady today, recording scores of 71, 72, 72, 72, 73 (which was dropped). But Texas made up a lot of ground with scores of 67, 69, 70, 73 and 90 (which was dropped). Stanford takes a 3 shot lead over Texas into the final round. ASU and San Jose St are 5 shots behind Texas.

It would be nice for Stanford to carry momentum into the fall/winter break by playing well in the final round tomorrow and winning the tournament. It would help for someone (or two or three) to go low which did not happen today.

After tomorrow, Stanford will be off until February 10.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - Hulk01 - 10-29-2024

Stanford's seven players are a collective 18-under.

Texas's six are a collective 22-over.

RE: Stanford Women's Golf 2025 - bbm233 - 10-30-2024

Strong finish to the fall season as Stanford won by 9 strokes over ASU, 15 strokes over Texas and 41 strokes over Kal (amongst others). Jr. Megha Ganne finished first in the individual competition, with Fr. Meja Ortengren a stroke behind at T2 and Jr. Kelly Xu two strokes behind at T4. BTW, there is one senior on the team, and she is unlikely to factor into the lineup in the spring.

Amazingly, the team led every tournament this fall after every round. The team is off until February.
