WBB: Stanford 65 Oregon State 56 -

Preview: Oregon State
Stanford takes on Oregon State at Maples, at 2pm on Sunday. The game will be televised on Pac 12 networks.
I am writing this preview prior to the Friday game with Oregon. Depending on how that game turns out, the Oregon State game could be for the all-time record for coach's wins in basketball.
Oregon State is ranked 26 by AP and also the coaches. Massey has them at 21. NET has them at 38. That puts them in the top half of an extraordinarily good league—they have emerged as the best team in the Pac 12 not from California or the mountain states. They are 14-2. Their only two losses were on their road trip to the LA schools, and those two schools are formidable, especially at home. So other than USC and UCLA, no one has beaten Oregon State. On the other hand, Oregon State has not played top competition outside the Pac 12. Its best win was last weekend, beating Arizona in two overtimes at home.
Rueck teams are always defensively sound, and on offense they play disciplined, orchestrated plays. Oregon State is never a free-wheeling “hand the ball to Juju and see what happens” kind of team. Nearly every time down the court they are attempting to execute a designed play.
Oregon State gives 6 players more than 20 minutes a game and rotates in 5 more for 10 minutes or more a game—so they use a deep rotation.
Leading OSU in scoring is their excellent 6’4” forward sophomore Raegen Beers. Beers is averaging 20ppg and 12 rpg, in only 27 minutes. Stopping her inside is job one.
Beers is not the only inside presence we need to worry about, however. Not starting but getting the 3rd most minutes is Timea Gardiner, a 6’3” sophomore forward. She is scoring 8 ppg and 6 rpg, and unlike Beers she shoots treys—at 37%.
The starter Stanford fans will remember the best is 5’11” junior point guard Talia von Oelhoffen, with a 2:1 assist to turnover ratio and scoring 11 ppg. TVO is a 34% three point shooter this year, but is a multi-level guard who does everything and does it well.
The remaining starters include AJ Marotte, Kelsey Rees, and Donovyn Hunter. Morotte and Hunter are guards in the 6’ range who shoot the three well, and Rees is a 6’5” junior forward from Australia who gives OSU even more height.
Between Rees, Beers, and Gardiner OSU thus has some of the best inside presence of anyone we have faced. Put those three in a Rueck system that emphasizes sound defense and we have the OSU recipe for success. All three of them have fewer fouls on the season than Brink or Iriafen--and they outnumber our bigs 3:2, so they could afford to spread the fouls around more than we can. Furthermore, OSU can shoot from outside, making their offense flexible.
Oregon State is deeper and taller than we are, overall, with a very experienced point guard and a coach who is probably second only to Tara in his meticulous planning. It is a challenging task ahead.

Update: Friday night.
With our win over Oregon, the Sunday game will be for the all time record. There was talk at the chalk talk that Sunday could be a sellout. Many WBB alums including Chiney, Jayne, Ros, etc. are expected back to attend.
But the game is by no means going to be an easy one, and the coaches and players need to keep focus. Brink could be out, and OSU is excellent.
Tonight, Oregon State beat Cal, but not by a great deal. Beers had 19 and Gardiner had 18. Gardiner shot 4/6 from three point range, so clearly someone needs to come out to defend her on the perimeter. TVO had a quiet game, but two bench guards went off for double digit points (each) for OSU. OSU is really, really deep. OSU shot 48% and Cal shot 35%, which tells us quite a bit about OSU's defense.

Sunday is looking like a sellout. I think the atmosphere and energy will be high for everyone. I hope our team doesn't feel "pressure" in a negative way but instead a chance to make history. Hope Brink is back. How is ESPN NOT picking up this game?! I know Pac12 was assigned this game long ago but it really should be on national TV.
We've won 12 straight against Oregon State many of them blowouts aside from last years 3 point win. OSU is 1-33 all time at Maples.
They do have a good record this season but have they really been tested thus far? With Brink healthy, I think we can take care of them handily. Without her, my confidence is less sure of what to expect.
Let's make history Sunday!

I think we should be favored, but on the other hand, I was there for the "1" and stayed after to watch Oregon State celebrate their first ever victory on the Maples court. It was not a good feeling.
Let hope the celebration is quite decisively the other way. I'd frankly like to get the record out of the way--it feels like something hanging over our heads.

Let's make history Sunday!
Stanford has four 3-point wins against OSU in their last 12 games. Until last year the matchups have been very lopsided since Slocum and Pivec’s departures.
I think with Brink it’s a relatively easy win. I’d group them as similar to the Washington schools but a tier below the top of the Pac-12. Without Brink the Iriafen/Beers battle would be very interesting and may determine the outcome.
OSU is deep but if you keep Beers in check they don’t have much else.
Agree that it’s very disappointing this (hopefully) historic moment won’t be on ESPN.

I just looked (Sat. 1:15PM, 25 hours before the game) and the uppermost center sections have a total of 5 single seats left. The 4 uppermost sections next to them have 8 singles total. If you want to sit with someone, you'll have to take the uppermost edge sections, or try general admission (upper end zone) and arrive early.
Don't forget to wear a mask. It will be tight quarters.
Hmmm... Maybe the ACC network might pick up the game to add interest to their viewers. I kinda doubt ESPN will carry more Stanford games just because Stanford will play in their backyard. Despite the rankings of PAC-12 WBB and the fact they knew two seasons ago that she would beat the record this year, they only have one PAC-12 game involving Stanford in their schedule. THW ESPN.
Last night, I was hoping the team would take Tara to the band and dance around with her for at least a few minutes.

#$#$#%^ PAC-12 TV is doing it again.
22 hours before the game, the PAC-12.com schedule is showing tomorrow's P12BAHD having a 1.5 hour "College Basketball" (men's) at 2PM and 0.5 hour "Women's College Basketball" at 3:30PM . (As a result, Sling is showing the same thing.)
Once again, I'll point out that Dustin Rocke seems to be the PAC-12 person responsible for this fiasco. Whoever it is, didn't go "Oops" and fix the problem after the last time.
By the way, this
2021 Wilner article (if paywalled, try this
secondary source) may possibly shed light on how TV games are picked by the networks. It's about football, but maybe the same or some variant goes for WBB.
As a reminder, likely, every Stanford WBB win for the remainder of at least this season will be setting a new record for most wins for a coach. I'm hoping Sunday's game is the first in years' worth of setting records.

My guess is that whoever competent staff there were that used to work at Pac 12 Networks have now left, whether physically or mentally. Why stick around to the bitter end? All kinds of things can be expected to fall apart in the "last days" of this dying beast.

Comcast shows the Stanford game on the main Pac-12 channel. It shows what you describe on the Pac-12 Bay Area channel. So I should be able to DVR it fine, but on the main channel it's more likely something that runs long will preempt the start, as happened Friday. So they really should run it on both.

where do folks recommend parking? i have been watching from home because of covid precautions, but this game is momentous. is the lot behind the aquatic center (that extends in dirt parking to el camino) still a good place?

It is, unless some other event is going on. And if they open the lane to el camino (which was open Friday night), it's the fastest way to get out. Don't tell anybody...
Mask up. It's going to be a zoo (yay).

Anxious to see if Cam is playing. I’m hearing it will be a game time decision.

On Friday, the paved portion of the lot between Sunken Diamond & the FB stadium wasn't full. But, with a sell-out it may well be. If it is raining, I'd suggest the lot by the track rather than the dirt beyond the FB stadium. Exit from these lots is much faster than from the parking garage across Campus Drive from Maples (under GSB Knight Mgmt Center).
That parking garage is a fine place to park if you're early, but exiting takes about 45 minutes from the bottom floor. (That was for WVB. I haven't parked there during this WBB season.) (Note: Traffic on Campus Drive from the Serra St. direction usually has to drive past the garage and U-turn to get into the garage. They route traffic so you have to deal with more cross-walks than you should. Plan accordingly.)
Oh, don't forget that there is usually a "behind the bench" with some of the team & Kate & Tara after the game. Plan for that, which makes the garage more palatable.

As an out of towner (who occasionally reads posts about mobile ticket headaches) there isn't a way to get an "old fashioned" ticket stub is there? I would purchase a ticket (that I would not actually be able to use) just for the ticket stub in case today is the day but as far as I can tell mobile tickets are the only option.

We got printed tickets when we bought our season tickets, but we had to pay extra. I don't remember how much, but it wasn't a big deal.
