The “heartfelt” messages players write thanking everyone as they enter the transfer portal.

Not a big fan of disingenuous self-serving messages. If they truly felt the way they say, they wouldn’t be leaving. So, spare me the BS.

Just shut up and leave. And don’t let the door hit you on the way out.

Players who have graduated may not have a choice or their priorities may have changed. Their graduate program of choice may not be available, or they have not been admitted to it at Stanford. There are factors in players lives that we are not aware, and these factors may have more importance than football or Stanford.

I transferred to Stanford and gave up a year of Basketball eligibility (was co-captain my junior year). Did not play Basketball at Stanford instead studied hard and completed a co-term engineering degree in 2 years. My priority was academics over sports.

Better to have positive messages than to have the program sledged on social media as they leave.

Congrats! That is terrific.

I will admit to being a grouchy old fart at times. And it’s not so much the player that spends 4 years and moves on in a graduate program. It’s more the guys that just go from program to program. What led to my post was Dillion Gabriel’s “heartfelt” message to Sooner land as he looks for his third program. In what must be his 8th year of College Football.

Many of these players did not have a choice to stay (including our impending departures that should start soon).

My problem with the "heartfelt messages" is the target audience. If some random student transfers to another school, does the general public care? The answer is no. If some football player does the same, is it really any different? IMO, no. I don't care how much said player did or did not "love" (or hate for that matter) the school they are leaving. It is what it is and he is leaving. I am pretty sure if I sent an e-mail to the transferring athlete requesting he stay it would have exactly zero effect. Said football player has his reasons and I don't get to judge/veto them. So, why does he think it necessary (or even relevant) to absolve himself to a bunch of people who have no say in what he does and who were not consulted when he made the decision?

If said player wants to really go in to his decision-making process to convince the world he is still a "good guy" and we should still "like" him, it MIGHT make sense to attempt such justification. However, his personal goals probably don't align with the random fan's goals for said player, and going forward the random fan won't interact (or matter) with the athlete anyway. Even attempting to justify the action would therefore be pointless.

Have you ever left somewhere you enjoyed for a better opportunity elsewhere? Did you think the people who helped you enjoy that place?

That’s all they’re doing, pretty weird getting mad at a 20-year-old kid for thinking people who helped participate in an important developmental year Athletically, intellectually, and personally.

In today’s world these are business decisions not personal ones. If you’re leaving Microsoft for an opportunity to make $100K more at Amazon that doesn’t mean you have a problem with the people you worked with at Microsoft. And nobody holds it against you for leaving.

If I’m leaving Indiana to make $100K more at Louisville I’m going, no matter how much I love at Indiana. And if I loved (or even just liked) Indiana then I’ll take the opportunity to thank the people who helped make my time there.

Complain about NIL and the portal, sure. I disagree but that’s reasonable. But STOP GROUCHING ABOUT THE PLAYERS. They are 18-22 year old kids who are just trying to do the best for themselves. As every person on this board would.

But we all live in a world where the players are amateurs and scholar-athletes, where scholar comes before athlete. Never mind that those rules are for long ago, and -- frankly -- those rules never really applied across the board anyway.

I agree it was never true, which is why I think the rules now are better. But you're free to disagree about this.

That still doesn't have anything to do with the players themselves, they operate within the given system. Didn't somebody once say, "Don't hate the player, hate the game?"

Seems to apply quite literally in this situation.

I was being a little facetious. College amateur athletes are pros, first and foremost. They work for a paycheck, not laundry. Period.

The purpose of their posts is to announce their entry into the transfer portal. It's never an easy pill to swallow for fans, coaches, or boosters. Better to dress it up with as much sugar as possible.

Most of them have involve a respectable amount of graphic design work with the player image superimposed over a school logo.

Does Stanford provide each athlete a template for whatever announcement they want to make, or even help with the transfer announcement itself?

I'm looking at something like EJ Smith's for example:

I'm glad EJ's announcement is grammatically sound, unlike many I have seen before from other players. I'm glad he became a part of the Stanford family.

Is there a popular 3rd party company that athletes use? (Some of the announcements look very similar.)
Do the families pay out of pocket?
Do they have the cooperation of the schools for photo rights to the player images and permission to use school logos?
