WBB: Stanford 74 Belmont 55 - 81alum - 11-20-2023

Preview:

We have played Belmont once before, at another Las Vegas tournament (Mandalay Bay) in 2017, and prevailed 74-53 behind Alanna Smith’s 23 points. Lindy La Rocque had just joined our staff after being an assistant coach at Belmont for a couple of years.

The game is only available for viewing on Flohoops. Two years ago I paid $12.50 to watch a couple of Flohoops games only to find that they did not even turn the feed on for the first game until it was partly over. I was able to cancel fairly easily. This year you either need to pay $150 for a year or $30 for a month. I won’t do so this time, so I will be listening only for the two Thanksgiving games. It is not even clear if we will have an audio feed for the second game, but we shall see.

The last time we played Belmont they were coached by 1st year coach Bart Brooks, who is now in his 7th year—so he and Tara have squared off against each other before. Nobody is left from those teams, and even coach Lindy has moved on, but the old Cardboard thread is here:

https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=15002

Belmont is one of those mid-level major teams that always is very good in their league and often knocks off a major team or two. Last year they were 23-12, 17-3 in their conference, and finished their conference on a 16 game winning streak before losing to Drake and then going to the WNIT and losing in the first round to Ball State. They played #5 Louisville and lost 70-75, and played #4 Iowa and lost 62-73. In short, they are more than capable of playing a top ranked team competitively and have consistently done so.

This year Belmont is 2-2, having beaten Georgia and Wichita State, and lost by 11 at Missouri and by 1 point to Mississippi State. So they are continuing the pattern of playing much bigger programs tight. The win over Georgia and the one point loss to Mississippi State certainly catch my attention.  Belmont looks like it would be competitive in the SEC--perhaps in the middle of that league.

Belmont does look rather thin this year. 10 players have played thus far, but only 7 have significant minutes. Their top 4 starters all have double digit scoring, so it won’t be easy shutting down just one or two players.  We, however, have more depth and my guess is Tara will try to keep the pace of the game very high for four quarters and attempt to wear them out.

5’9” freshman guard Jailyn Banks leads them with 16ppg. She also leads their assists and nearly leads their minutes. That is a big load for a freshman. I would expect Talana to be on her.  But we have been burned by unheralded but talented freshmen before--there is not a lot of tape on them.

6’2” junior forward Tessa Miller is their second leading scorer at 15ppg. But she is supported by another 6’2” junior forward Kendall Chessman at 13 ppg. Chessman has hit 15/28 treys so far this year, so she will need to be a focus on the perimeter too.  Maybe 6'2" Agara on her?

So Belmont has a little depth at forward.

Rounding out their starting five are 5’7” redshirt junior guard Tuti Jones at 10 ppg, and 6’0” junior guard Kilyn McGuff at 8 ppg.  Jones apparently was a 40% three point shooter but was injured most of last year and has not gotten her shooter's touch back quite yet.  Let's hope she doesn't do it against us.  And in case you were wondering, yes, Kilyn's father is Kevin McGuff, the Ohio State head coach.  Sending his daughter to Belmont is, I think, a mark of confidence in that program.

Most of their games so far are available only on ESPN+ which I do not subscribe to, so I have not been able to watch those replays. Their first loss at Missouri is available here, however:

https://www.espn.com/watch/player/_/id/0460a376-5401-421f-98a2-7f9c26511991

In watching bits of this game, I noticed a few things. Belmont is not as height-challenged as some teams we have played. We will still have the height advantage inside, but it won’t be like Cal Poly. Belmont also plays some zone, so we may be forced to use our three point shooting more than against Duke. Belmont got some fast breaks, took advantage of some backdoor cuts and other kinds of cuts for that matter. They look like a well coached team, and we should not take them lightly.

Very helpful preview, much appreciated

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - Softball Fan - 11-20-2023

Another excellent preview.  This is my first wbb post this season.  I'm not an expert on Stanford basketball although it becomes my favorite sport to watch in January.

While Belmont is not ideal for RPI and building a tournament resume, I think it's a game Stanford needs to continue sorting things out.

I like Nunu.  Reminds me a little of Charles Barkley.  She's put time in the weight room for a young kid.  In today's game you almost have to put a physical presence on the court when the refs let the sport turn into a hockey fight.  In the Duke game she didn't seem to have her mojo at full tempo.

I like Bosgana a lot.  She has the defensive tenacity of a Hull sister and is willing to mix it up under the basket.  I believe she can be a good shooter and is part of the solution but not sure the coaching staff agrees with that at the moment.

I think Lepolo is the best possible option for point guard.  Maybe won't score many points but is Stanford's best player at bringing the ball up the court.  Stanford will face much tougher presses than what Duke did.

Maybe Demetre has the potential but Stanford needs players to show up when they get on the court and establish a  track record the staff can count on in critical games.  I would not put her in the starting five at this point.

This Belmont game gives all the players a chance to show what they can do and still come away with a win. I'll be listening, not watching.

You can join FloHoops at $14.99 per month (automatically renewed monthly until you cancel) by going through a Big East link. You don't have to have a Big East member school email address to get this rate.

See this thread on the Boneyard for more info and the link.

This method worked for me in the past and still seems to work right now. I used the Villanova link from the second post on page 2 of the Boneyard thread.

Thank you CompSci!  At $15 for two games I will give that a try, despite the poor quality last time around.

I just used the link you provided and subscribed and immediately cancelled, and have access for one month, so I shall indeed be watching our two games.  Provided FloHoops doesn't mess up their broadcasts.

The game is listed as the "Ball Dawgs Classic" which I guess is the name of the tournament in Henderson, Nevada.  A little odd since on the Flo Hoops schedule I found they don't list the two schools.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - CompSci87 - 11-21-2023

FloSports still has the three games from the Bahamas in 2021 available for replay. I think all three are complete, even the one where the live stream missed the first quarter.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - JohnR34231 - 11-21-2023

I got the impression from the Duke game that while we are capable of beating most teams there are quite a few teams that are capable of beating us.
Hopefully Belmont isn't one of them.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - Hoops9092 - 11-21-2023

Keep in mind that by joining the FloHoops, you should be able to watch UConn and UCLA on Friday evening as that will only be available on FloHoops. So it may be worth the $15 or $30 for the Stanford games and some other signature games.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - crackpot - 11-21-2023

Heh, I was just yelling at myself for plopping down $14.99 for FloHoops (especially given the horrendous experience of 2021). Then I realized if it was a home game, I'm paying $25 for my seat, $7 for bridge toll, and whatever it costs for gas and wear-and-tear to drive the 72 miles to and fro. Doesn't include the cost of any food I might buy along the way.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - 81alum - 11-22-2023

For those who have Flohoops, Florida State plays Northwestern in the first part of our tournament starting at 11 Pacific.  If we beat Belmont, we will play the winner of that game.  If we lose to Belmont, we play the loser of that game.  So a chance to see our next opponent.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - Baez87 - 11-22-2023

Anyone figure out a way to work around FloHoops’ audio delay in their feed? Very annoying in game one.
There is a streaming audio from GoStanford.com but it might also be out of sync with the video.

For some reason, I don't have any particular delay.  The audio and video seem in sync to me.

I agree. And the analytics support that Bosgana is off to a great start this season:
#3 on the team in PER (behind only Brink and Iriafen)
#3 in Offensive Win Shares per 40 (again behind only Brink/Iriafen)
#2T in Defensive Win Shares per 40 (only Brink is ahead; Jump and Lepolo are tied for 9th)

But despite starting, she's 7th in minutes (non-starters ahead of her are Demetre at #3 and Agara at #6).

I think comparing her to a Hull sister is brilliant. Really good observation.
I knew I liked her a lot!
Yes I too am puzzled by her not getting more playing time.
Agara been very intriguing. And Demetre good defense but offense has really looked bad (other than 1 critical 3, and some other points more or less in garbage time). Regardless hope to see more of Bosgana.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - 81alum - 11-22-2023

I also like Bosgana and am impressed with her improvement.  In figuring out her minutes, remember that Tara's scouting report defenses are all about match ups and getting the right people to defend.  It could be that Bosgana's defensive rating is so high precisely because Tara has not kept her in to defend unfavorable matchups, but uses her whenever she is in a position to defend well.  Just a hypothesis.  Let's see how much she plays in this tournament.

Isn't that Missy reffing the Florida St. game?

I nearly posted the same thing, then thought if I pretended I hadn't seen her she might go away before Friday's game.

Stanford Belmont will tip off, supposedly, in 35 minutes which would be 1:15, or fifteen minutes earlier than scheduled, given that the first game went by quickly.

Florida State dominates and wins over Northwestern.  I will save analysis for the Friday preview thread when we know for sure if we will play them.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - 81alum - 11-22-2023

In case any are wondering, Belmont is a university of about 10,000 students in Nashville.  For most of its existence it was a women's college, but is now coeducational.  It was originally a Christian college that was part of the Tennessee Baptist Convention, but has become more independent, although it continues a Christian focus.  In 2010 it had a major controversy over LGBTQ rights (fired its women's soccer coach for having kids with her same sex partner) but backed down and eventually adopted a nondiscrimination policy.  I'm unclear on what happened to the coach, though.

Stanford up 16-9 at the first break.  Ask and ye shall receive:  Bosgana has played the whole way so far, great defense and 6 points.  Brink with an early foul is sitting.  Iriafen with 6 points on superb spin moves down low.  Harriel rapidly replaced Lepolo at point guard.

20-14 after the first quarter.  Lots of player subs, Tara is trying to wear Belmont down.  I expect we will see more of Brink in the next quarter after sitting with one foul.  We are 0-4 from three and need to get a little of that going.  Iriafen and Bosgana have been terrific on offense.

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - biketoc - 11-22-2023

Oh no, she missed one!

RE: WBB: Stanford vs. Belmont Wed 1:30 - OCcardinal - 11-22-2023

Brink just missed a free throw. Streak ends at 73.
