SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - 97fan - 06-28-2010

Andy Staples of Sports Illustrated has a column today on JH\'s cryptic tweets:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/writers/andy_staples/06/28/harbaugh-tweets/

I am by no means an expert on NCAA rules, but if there\'s any gray area here at all, it seems to me that JH is taking an unnecessary risk.

and that, I\'m guessing, will be the end of Harbaugh\'s tweets.

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - fullmetal - 06-28-2010

Ah great...now the fun\'s gone.

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - Spiny_Norman - 06-28-2010

Harbaugh even tweets with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind.

But 332,000 people are following JH on Twitter?!?!!!?  Holy moly.  Where did all of those people come from?  JH is a viral marketer\'s dream.

As a point of contrast, here are the followers of some other Pac 10 coaches\' tweets:

Tedford - 2001 (jefftedford)
Kiffin - 5406 (Lane_Kiffin)
Neuheisel - 2733 (CoachNeuheisel)
Kelly - no account that I could find
Riley - 908 (Coach_Riley)

And one coach who has moved on:
Pete Carroll - 400,642 (PeteCarroll)

New Tweet from Harbaugh - shade - 07-02-2010

"I just had a wonderful conversation.  Stanford has everything, why wouldn\'t I want to go there!"

What\'s the SI interpretation of this one?

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - Robbie - 07-02-2010

I am not enough of a mind reader to interpret it directly, but my indirect interpretation is "the rules enforcers aren\'t going to stop me from at least blurring the line about commenting on recruits."

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - Spiny_Norman - 07-02-2010

I hope that Harbaugh\'s wonderful conversation was not with a recruit.  July 1 to 31 is a recruiting dead period.

But the tweet is vague.  For all we know, he was speaking to his toddler about how great Stanford is.  This might be Harbaugh blowing raspberries at the NCAA.

FWIW re tweet:  might\'a been re:Twenty - Redrum - 07-02-2010

Ra\'Chard Pippens , a 2-star CB from Georgia  (A cornerback?  Hey! a CORNERBACK!)

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - fullmetal - 07-02-2010

Referencing Spiny_Norman\'s recruiting tidbit, I sure hope Harbaugh is just tweeting this far after the fact...

Contact - Redrum - 07-02-2010

The staff didn\'t call him (Pippens).  He called the staff.  Had previously announced he would reveal his choice on Friday.

Pippens had seven other offers,  picked us over Northwestern as finalists.

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - washingtonismoney - 07-02-2010

Looks like Auburn on his list, so probably legit. Perhaps even ESS-EEE-CEE speed.

Re: SI on Harbaugh\'s tweets - ealtice - 07-03-2010

Both ESPNU and Rivals have Pippens as a 3* recruit, and I believe it was ESPN that described him somewhere as someone who would be getting much more attention as the recruiting cycle continued.  Apparently timed very well at one of the combines, and had a 42 inch vertical leap, so at least he seems athletic.

Regarding Harbaugh\'s tweets, ESPN has an interesting story on technology and recruiting which makes me think that Harbaugh\'s blurbs sent to thousands after a student has already committed may be one of the least problematic "blurry lines" in recruiting.
