2023 UCLA at Stanford Predictions Thread - george - 10-17-2023

Am I a bad person for being sad that we won't be playing UCLA on the regular anymore? Maybe it's because I live in West LA, but I've always had a soft spot for the Bruins. I mean, don't get me wrong, I want to continue what we started in Boulder and send them home with an L, but still, there are eminently more hateable teams that we play.

Point-spread is moving up. From -16.5 (UCLA) to -17.0...
I think it's about right. Bruins got stung last week. Tall order for Cardinal, + no home-field advantage, as always. Many UCLA people in the Bay Area. Maybe the cutesy Stanford Cheer Squad can excite the partisans with pom-pom routines?

***IF*** the Cardinal can tackle the UCLA running backs and tight ends, which is difficult, then the matchup is favorable and the improving Cardinal can win this game, at home, after a monster comeback, for Homecoming.

Hard to know whether our second half surge against Colorado was a flash in the pan against a not-so-good defense or something that is going to continue.

Until I have some confirmation of the latter I'll have to go with Bruins 31, Stanford 16.

P.S. As I suspected it was the former. I'm afraid we can look forward to similar butt kickings against Washington, Oregon State and Notre Dame. Perhaps the Cougs in Pullman also.
Will things improve next year? I sure hope so.

Nope. Not a bad person. My roommate both years in grad school played nickel back for UCLA, so I'll miss them on the schedule. And yes, there are many more distasteful teams that we play, with a whole new array of them starting next season.

It will always be more proper to play top tier programs from the state of California where possible. I will miss rivalry matchups with geographic relevance.

I'm throwing a flag.

You are being overly "Stanford Nice" to one of the Treacherous Two who efficiently executed a stab your mates in the back hit-job on the Pac-12 that effectively destroyed the conference and their partners/comrades of over 100 years. The moratorium on saying anything remotely nice about UCLA is 10 years ... minimum. It also should involve abject prostration at the feet of the-left-behind 10 and a promise to schedule only away games in all sports for the next 100 years. Then you can say something nice about them but only when they play USC.

Seriously, the West Coast will not have an athletic league for ANY NCAA SPORT due to USC and their Bruin flunky/stooge. We're now a part of the F@#$ing Atlantic Coast Conference and will play conference home games against RUTGERS and SYRACUSE attended by no one. We're now scheduling league games on the EASTERN SEABOARD IN ALL SPORTS. May UCLA burn in Dante's 9th circle of hell along with Lucifer and all others who betrayed friends, countrymen, and fellow citizens.

Other than that I guess the Bruins are OK. I liked our 109-61 basketball game against them and Steve Lavin at Maples in 1997.

My invoking of Dante was a hope to get a new especially painful level created just for the USC/UCLA killers of the PAC-12.

Last time Stanford played UCLA for a homecoming game was Owusu catch game. I was there! Our receivers played lights out that game… Ah, the memories.

Yeah, for a 10 year period starting in 2009 we absolutely owned UCLA. Most of the games weren't even very close. Those were the days.

Yeah, for a 10 year period starting in 2009 we absolutely owned UCLA. Most of the games weren't even very close. Those were the days.

From the 2010 season through the 2018 season, we went 28-0 vs UCLA, Cal and Oregon State!!!

Maybe that confusion illustrates the point - Rutgers, Syracuse, Pitt, Maryland, ........, Big10(??), ACC, ....... , who knows? and who cares?????

Skip and JimD are both correct. Rutgers isn’t in the ACC (whoops, mixed up my East Coast also rans!) but who cares? ACC alternatives Wake Forest, NC State, and Pitt are just as unexciting.

Remember UCLA when next year’s schedules come out across all sports and in the meantime let’s not throw any bouquets at either the USC Judas or their cross-city sidekick and stooge.

When tOSU is beating either of them by 50 with 2 minutes to play, I’ll be rooting for Buckeye fake punts followed by an on-side kick and the LA school going on to lose by 64.

Heck, to paraphrase Churchill, when Hell puts together a team and is playing UCLA I’ll wear red to the game and go out of my way to say something nice about the devil.

But other than that I guess they’re OK. I liked the 2012 season when we beat them twice in seven days to clinch the Rose Bowl.

Too bad we are not playing on FRIDAY night -- that seems to be our zone.

Well -- Pac12 After Dark, but on ESPN.
This will not be as big a slap as USC (56-10) because UCLA lacks a seasoned QB...
But, they bring two Major Strengths that are a MORE LETHAL COMBO:
1) A much better Defense than Troy; Utes and Bruins are best defenses in Pac12.
We (and others) have proven that Buffs have the WORST defense in the Pac-12. Ominous.
2) A potent three-headed Bruin rushing attack which is very difficult for us to slow down. How do we achieve stops?
We don't. Instead, we need to unleash the Kraken (double blitz) and take chances to shake the Frosh QB Dante Moore into Turnovers.
The big problem will be forcing UCLA into "third and long". Hence, our 17 point (large) HomeDog status.

We also need to keep the ball longer -- and that means "more Cowbell": throw to TEs,
because UCLA will now double team Superman Ayomanor on every down.
Despite our blessed Reunion Weekend...
I think UCLA puts up 38 to 16 (3 x Karty, Ayomanor), if we get a couple turnovers.
We might have ZERO at half, but don't spot the Bruins 29 -- OK?

God, was that 26 years ago. I'm used to the Stanford boards being populated by old-timers, but now coming to grips that I'm now from an old-timer generation having graduated in '94.

On the subject of Rutgers (and Maryland) in the B1G, that was one of the more ridiculous moves that the conference made. I assume it was a vain hope to benefit from all the television sets & media coverage in NYC & DC, but AFAIK none of that ever panned out, and the conference is forever stuck with the two schools.

Of course, Stanford fans got bit by that, when we played our bowl game at Levi's against MD. We were all hoping to play against a team with some mid-western football tradition, and instead got a basketball school. Bitter cold weather to boot. Probably hastened the death of that particular bowl.
