Stanford Men's Water Polo 2023 - cardcrimson - 09-03-2023

The season started this weekend at the Triton Invite, and not a great start for the Card, as we dropped the opener to Long Beach, 12-10. We did follow it up with easy wins against Irvine, Cal Baptist, and Concordia.

Interestingly, Long Beach then dropped their next game to Navy. . . .

I was surprised to see that loss as well.  Stanford is only ranked #4, but still.  If I count right, LBSU out-fouled Stanford 15-7, which means Stanford had a lot more power play opportunities.  One of their players, Robert Lopez Duart (frosh from Spain), scored 7 of his team's 12 goals (one on a penalty shot), including all 3 in the first and 3 of 4 in the 4th (including one goal at the buzzer (I assume against no goalie)).

Stanford scored on all 3 penalty shots (LBSU had none).  On 12 power plays, Stanford scored on one and just after another finished.  Of 7 power plays, LBSU scored on one.
