With Opening Day Upon Us and Spring in the Air, Hope Remains Eternal. . . . -

Will Stanford continue its National Championship streak in sports, and stop embarrassing itself otherwise?
Will the Giants have a winning season?
Will the A's do something, anything?
Will Phogge be freed?

Not sure if that's meant as a critique or a compliment, though it might just be accurate.

Go CUBBIES!!!
I remember Jack Brickhouse calling the games (The Cubs are alive in seventy-five).
At first - Bill Buckner
Second - Manny Trillo
Third - Bill Madlock
Short - Don Kessinger
Right - Jose Cardenal
Center - Rick Monday
Left - Jerry Morales
Catcher - Steve Swisher
Pitcher - Rick Reuschel
May be moving the years/players, but those are the ones I remember when I started watching the Cubbies on WGN after arriving from school.

Those were my Cubs growing up as well. Used to take the El from Evanston to go to games. I cried like a little baby in 2015, and my brother got me a t-shirt that reads "The greatest baseball game in history was played on a Wednesday in Cleveland"
Jose Cardenal, aka "Hot Dog" was such a character. Not the best player, but quite the character. Madlock was my favorite Cub until the got Sandberg.

1B Ernie Banks
2B Glenn Beckert

3B Ron Santo
LF Billy Williams
CF ???
RF ???
C Randy Hundley
P Fergie Jenkins, Ken Holtzman, Bill Hands
Four future Hall of Famers in those line-ups....

A little before my time. Never got to see Banks play, but I did get to see Williams & Jenkins play in 1973, my first Cubs game

I never saw any of them, but I treasure the one experience I had watching a ballgame at Wrigley Field in 1997. I remember Mark Grace, Ryne Sandberg, Shawon Dunston, Sammy Sosa, Doug Glanville, Brian McRae and Scott Servais. Trachsel pitched.
I note that the year you watched Rick Reuschel, he had the fewest wins and most losses of the starters -- and the lowest ERA. His older brother Paul Reuschel was on the team as well.
I really remember Rick Reuschel winning 36 games in two years as a 39 and 40 year old for the Giants. Big Daddy...

The Chicago Cubs are in first place!
Just to show how meaningless that is:
The Oakland A's are in first place!

Lived in Chicagoland for a stretch in the mid 80's during the Bears heyday--company had Bears season tickets and made it to a couple of games. Was a guest at a Cubs game or two, courtesy of our LTL freight rep; great experience indeed, and not just the baseball.

Meaningless? Come on Doc, so it's been 33 years, but the A's have won more championships than the Giants.
33 years, how disappointing is that, though. The A's were the team of my youth, adolescence and young adulthood, from the transistors in the ear Swinging A's, to Billy Ball and Celebration, to LaRussa's Bash Brothers and Eck. Great times and great memories.

Back in the day, one of my bosses lived in Chicago and his secretary was married to one of the Chicago Budweiser distributors. So through her I once got invited to the Budweiser box at Wrigley Field. It was air-conditioned and had a catered spread that was hard to beat. The next box over was Harry Carey, and watching him lead the stadium in "Take Me Out To The Ball Game" during the 7th inning stretch was really cool. The two Budweiser employees manning the box were named Chip and Biff and were right out of frat boy central casting. They made sure we saved room for the dessert cart that appeared in the middle of the 7th. Rumor had it there was a game going on but I had no idea.

My Little League years were Reggie Jackson, Catfish Hunter, Sal Bando, Vida Blue, Campy Campaneris, Ken Holtzmann, Gene Tenace, Blue Moon Odom, Joe Rudi, Claudell Washington, Mike Epstein, Dave Duncan, Mike Hegan, Darold Knowles, Horacio Pena...the only time I gave equal time to the A's. Still liked the Giants with Rader, Fuentes, Speier, Matthews, Maddox, Bonds, Ontiveros, Kingman, Bryant, Barr, Caldwell, Montefusco, Lavelle, etc. but they were a poor team. And the A's were winning championships.

I've always followed the A's. But now I only know who 4 of the players are. It's a triple A team at this point.
