Stanford 49 Ole Miss 54 season ends - 81alum - 03-17-2023

Preview:

Ole Miss stifled Gonzaga with a close, face-guarding defense that flustered and flummoxed the nation’s best three point shooting team.  It reminded me very much of what Vic Shaeffer teams have done against us.  The ESPN announcers noted that the Stanford coaches had already commented that the challenge would be getting our team ready for the degree of physicality and frenetic energy.  These are the kinds of teams that have always given us trouble, and here comes trouble.

The University of Mississippi, otherwise known as Ole Miss,  and represented by “Colonel Reb” as a mascot until 2018, plays in the SEC.  They were 11-5 in conference, which was good enough for 4th.  They seem better than an 8 seed to me.  Like us, they took South Carolina to overtime—on February 19.  They lost to Utah but just by 2 points—certainly better than our last Utah game. So they have shown they can compete with the highest level teams, as well as we have competed.

Massey has them at 29, but with the nation's 10th best defense.  NET has them at 25.  If the committee went by NET alone then they should have been a 6 or 7 seed, not 8.  But they are no doubt the best 8 seed since we drew the worst 1 seed bracket, and now we have to rapidly switch into high gear to beat them.

Ole Miss shoots 29% of its threes, and makes about 5 a game—so while it is competent from distance that is not its forte.  Stopping other teams from shooting threes, however, is its forte, as poor Gonzaga discovered tonight.

Against an aggressive, close defense like Ole Miss presents, the solution is to have quick guards who can get around their perimeter defense and drive, picking up fouls and layups.  The defenders leave no reaction space, so putting a good move on one will leave them behind.  Unfortunately, that has not been our strength.  Jump is a super shooter, but she can't exactly juke her defender.  Tonight Lepolo did drive twice and was rewarded with some free throws, and Nivar attacked some too.  We need more of that.  If Lepolo can continue to feed Betts perfect passes down low, then forcing it into the paint can work, but there is little room for error.

We should be able to defend Ole Miss well, so this could turn into a low scoring game, as the dreadful first quarter of the Ole Miss/Gonzaga game turned out to be.  Officiating will play a role, as it did tonight at the expense of Gonzaga.  The Gonzaga fans were very unhappy at the many, many non-calls, and that favored the defense.  Ole Miss did seem competent at the pull up mid range jumper, a shot we have not done so well defending.

Ole Miss is led by 5’8” senior guard Angel Baker.  She shoots 36% of her threes but takes 3 times as many twos, averaging 15 points a game.  She had 11 against Gonzaga.

Their second leading scorer is Madison Scott, a 6’1” junior forward.  She makes 52% of her shots, all inside, for 12 points and 8 rebounds per game.  She also had 11 against Gonzaga.

Marquesha Davis is a 6’0” senior guard shooting 46%, mostly from inside the arc.  She had 8 against Gonzaga.

Snudda Colins is a 6’1” junior forward who leads the team with 54 treys, but shoots them at 28%.  She was 3/9 against Gonzaga.

Finally, Myah Taylor is a 5’7” grad guard with 107 assists to 54 turns.  She had 4 assists to 0 turns abainst Gonzaga.

Ole Miss played 11 players vs. Gonzaga but only 8 for extended minutes, so they utilize some depth.

Well, what is there to say?  Based on our past results, it is one of the worst match ups that we could draw, but we need to be able to beat this kind of team, since Texas could very well be the next opponent.  Hanging onto the ball is important, but Gonzaga did a reasonable job of that.  What Gonzaga never did really was get open shots.  They forced up many late, off balance, out of flow, and even when they were open they seem flustered by the wear and tear of the Ole Miss defense and they still missed.  We know what is coming, now, can we be ready for it?  Will Brink play?  We will find out Sunday.

Thanks for the great analysis. I was really nervous before reading this, and now am even more so! Please, please, let's have Cam back.

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - M T - 03-17-2023

Hmmm.... 5'6", 6'1", 6'0", 6'1", 5'7"  against  6'1", 6'0", 6'1", 6'3", 5'7" (Friday's starters) or 6'1", 6'0", 6'4", 6'3", 5'7"(normal).
Ole Miss's two taller players are 6'4" (14.3min/gm) and 6'2" (21.3min/gm)

If Brink isn't back, maybe Betts can be a big target.

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - bl82 - 03-17-2023

You can see the speed and athleticism of Ole Miss in the extended highlights from the Gonzaga game.  These highlights skew way toward offense, so you really can’t see how Old Miss shut down the Zags on the perimeter.  We are certainly going to need excellent guard play to help counteract their strengths.

I watched the first half of the Miss/Zags game at Maples but then went home. Copying my observations on Miss from another thread:

Quote:Ole Miss plays very tight aggressive defense with their hands waving in all directions. They ought to pick up some fouls that way, but haven't been called for a lot yet. They did get called for a technical foul for guarding the inbounder too closely.

On offense they drive aggressively to the hoop. They got to the line a few times, but also got called twice for charging.

Agreed on all counts.  Including when we both went home.  Their defense makes for a very ugly game which I found tiresome to watch.  Gonzaga had 7 assists--all that face guarding depressed passing, too.

Ole Miss is the apparent future of college sports.  They are a portal team with most of their players from the portal.  Of the 12 players listed on their roster, 7 have played for other colleges.  The squad includes 2 graduate students, 5 seniors, 3 juniors, 1 sophomore, and 1 freshman.  They have experience, maturity and physical development.  Finally they play a style of basketball that Stanford has never countered well.

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - Jskass - 03-18-2023

I am going to risk the wrath but given those comments if we might be best off playing Nivar a lot in the first half and saving Jump until we tire their guards a bit?

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - BosCard - 03-18-2023

I really hope Brink gets healthy and can play because we will really need her shot blocking in this game.  I also think we may see more Nivar and Bosgana this game as they are our best players at making back door cuts and then finishing the cut with a basket.

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - chimera - 03-18-2023

This game will tell if all the talk about the new tourney ready team is true.  This is not a great match-up for us.  They might do what USC did to us.  We did beat USC the second time around, so maybe we have learned how to cope better with that style.  I (of course) hate the sort of team Miss is - gather all the transfers you can, mostly upperclassmen who you know are good, and have them play super aggressive, physical defense.

I usually really enjoy watching the "other" game when we get NCAA games at home.  I left at the half because I was not enjoying watching the ugly basketball, which was mostly a game of will the officials call a foul on this play or not.  WCBB is not the high flying stuff that can draw fans with sheer athleticism.  It needs to flow and not look like a rugby scrum with scores that don't break 50 or even fans who enjoy basketball will be turned off.

It’s not the worst idea—Nivar played quite well yesterday—but Tara would never go for it. She loves having Jump in the game as much as possible.

Jump does help space the floor, even when she is face guarded.  And she is quite good at the back door cut--she usually gets a couple of those against teams who guard her closely.  But I do think there will be a big role for Nivar, Bogana, and a driving Lepolo.

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - WBB fan - 03-18-2023

As of now, Vegas has us a 10.5 point favorite. Biggest spread they show other than SC, which is 25.5 over South Florida. Utah is only 9.0 over Princeton. That one, I think is way off. I predict that Utah will win by a lot more than that.

RE: Stanford vs. Ole Miss Sunday 6:30 - BosCard - 03-18-2023

Getting to the free throw line will be key.  LSU defeated Ole Miss despite getting out rebounded and shooting a much lower percentage but they got  30 free throw attempts.  We need Jones, Brink and Iriafen (and Nivar) driving and getting free throws.

I agree with you and want to see our players make their FTs at 80+%. We can expect a very aggressive, physical Miss team that figures they have nothing to lose by playing that way. It looks like they have terrific defense. We need to be equally aggressive and rely upon our depth and better skills. We want to avoid silly fouls, only get those where we challenge shots, rebounds, and make Miss feel some physical pain.

Jump isn't going to get more than one or two open looks, hope she hit those limited opportunities. We want to beat them badly in the paint which is what SC did to them. And we need to take care of the ball with limited turnovers. Let's shoot 45+% and hold thme to less than 35%. Emma-Nnopu and Nivar might be impt. for us on the perimeter.

I want to see our teamplay with the energy and intensity that not only matches but also exceeds opponents, totalhustle and all out play.

Rivals reporter posted a few minutes ago that Brink practiced today and should be good to go tomorrow.  Great news.

In the presser, Tara took the blame for some of Jump's off nights, "I probably played her too much, she needed some rest to keep her legs strong for shooting" or words to that effect.  I think we will see Jump on the bench for at least a few minutes.

Good news indeed, but let's also remember Washington.  She had some sort of cold and was feeling a little off, and she played, but was not her usual self, and we know the results.  Hopefully this time she will be 100%, but she can't be expected to go as many minutes after being sick.  Everyone else needs to be ready in case she has an off night.

Here is the feed for the Ole Miss and Stanford pregame pressers.  Ole Miss begins at 4:38.  Stanford begins at 55:22.

You absolutely HAVE to watch our student athletes speaking about Tara, but wait until you here Emma-Nnopu discussing "the nice girls from Stanford."  My confidence in this team just went up after hearing her rejoinder!

Tara seemed almost dour, deadly serious.  "Didn't sleep last night.   They are a very experienced group, didn't see a freshman on their roster.  They took Gonzaga apart last night.  We are going to have to play very well."

She noted Brink practiced very well today.  A reporter asked about whether she would be limited in minutes, and she said not only Brink but "everyone is day to day."

"Rebounding is key.  We can't be the nice girls from Stanford."

"Coaching is not giving candy to players, it's making corrections, and helping them reach their potential."

Tara was asked to reflect on her first NCAA tournament game with Stanford--an overtime win in Montana, in which Jennifer Azzi was a sophomore and Jos Tinkle's mother played for Montana.

Yep.  Tara talks about it in the presser.

Speaking of which, the Ole Miss coach is quite charismatic, and it is easy to see why her players love her.  Their strategy, she says, is no secret: "Rebound, Run, Share."  They want to get transition points.  They are a terrific rebounding team and had 24 O-boards last night.  Having played South Carolina, they are certainly not intimidated by us.  She said "We are ready to fight, and someone is going to get knocked out tomorrow."
