Vaughters and Richards questions -
OutsiderFan - 11-20-2011
I didn't notice Jordan Richards playing last night. Is he hurt now? Or was he benched?
I must say I am really disappointed by James Vaughters. My expectation was to see a guy making plays similarly to Skov as a True Frosh. Not even close. He has 5 tackles on the year, and has a total of one asst. tackle in the last eight games. I noticed him on the field at ILB last night. He seems tentative and plays nowhere near as fast as his H.S. videos.
Should Vaughters have been redshirted? Or, even though he has had such little impact, playing him this year is smart because he'll have invaluable experience to build on next year?

Not sure about Richards, but we'll focus on Vaughters. Not sure what happened there, in terms of impact. Early in the season I thought for sure he was on the Skov development curve--loved the way he undressed that Arizona RT early in the season--but he does seem to have petered out. Maybe it's an issue that we're so much deeper than usual. For example, some people were saying Vaughters might eventually bump Trent Murphy. Don't look now, but Murphy's only one sack behind Chase Thomas. So maybe there's just no room? Or maybe the coaches were speculating similarly (that Vaughters > Murphy) and ended up being surprised?
That said, David Shaw did praise his development--http://www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/rapid-reports/post/15979336--so maybe it's something we're missing.

Vaughters played a fair amount in the second half last night, and seemed to be reasonably effective, actually. I did catch one play where he clearly had no idea where he was supposed to be positioned, but based on the signals/exchange with the sidelines on that one, it wasn't clear whose fault that really was. In any case, he's still a youngster with a lot of talent. Shane didn't really start to rock until the second half of his sophomore season, in my view.

Richards did play when Delano went out briefly.
I agree that Vaughters has been a little disappointing given the pre-season hype, but we have a LOT of good linebackers. He's not better than any of our starting four right now, so it shouldn't be too surprising that he hasn't played much in conference play.
That said, there were two plays in the second half last night where he forced Maynard out of the pocket. Won't show up in the box score, but it's not like he didn't contribute at all.

Maybe someone with a recording can confirm what happened, but I thought that it was Vaughters who made the decision to leave his man (the WR Hagan) as Maynard was being chased by 2 other Stanford players as Cal was on the drive that would lead to their 3rd TD. Vaughters (?) came forward to make a play on Maynard who flipped it easily to Hagan who was uncovered for a TD. Without a replay, I could not tell if the other pursuers had a chance to make a play on Maynard.

Nope--Vaughters was closing in from the other direction. Believe it was Michael Thomas who left Hagan.

Definitely not Vaughters nor Thomas.

I re-watched the game last night. On the TD that made it 28-21 with the 2 pt conversion, I actually saw something good from Vaughters. He was playing ILB. He had Maynard as he rolled out and the Safety #47 had the TE #87. As it was, #47 left #87, leaving him uncovered for the easy TD toss.
But in watching the play over again, it was clear that had #47 stayed with the TE, Maynard was going to have to throw the ball away or be sacked by Vaughters. Here's what happened...
As Maynard rolled out, at a certain point it looked like Maynard was going to run, until he realized Vaughters was going to track him down. At the instant it looked like Maynard was going to run,#47 reacted to it and left the TE. That meant #47 didn't trust Vaughters would get to Maynard in time. When Maynard saw #47 reacting to his run by leaving #87, he had enough time to make a quick toss to the uncovered TE. When #47 left #87 that put two guys going for Maynard and nobody on #87. The Safety blew it by not trusting the defensive scheme (Vaughters) and trying to cover two guys, instead of his assignment, and in so doing prevented Vaughters from being able to make a big play. You could tell Vaughters was upset #47 left #87 because he expressed frustration after the TD.
If you want a textbook example of what it means when players don't do their job and try to do too much, watch #47 on that TD.

#47 is walk-on Myles Muagututia.

Myles Muagututia is on scholarship.
Vaughters only documentable sin so far... - Redrum - 11-21-2011

I will be satisfied if Vaughters can make tackles. Tackles ...when the QB or RB is cornered in a collapsing pocket, tackles in the open field. Visualize
that. Tackles that get finished when at least one hand is on the ball carrier. Tackles that, when made on the 40 yard line don't finish up eight yards later. Ya' know what I'm talking about?

I know of what you speak, Redrum, but I have not seen such tackles in oh so long... (/sigh)
