CFP - 82lsju - 12-03-2022

USC may have played their way out of a CFP berth.

TCU currently trailing KSU 21-10 with 12 min left in the 3rd quarter

Go K-State
Go LSU
Go Purdue

RE: CFP - BostonCard - 12-03-2022

LSU beating Georgia won’t make a difference; Georgia is in win or lose.  Likewise Michigan.  Of course, I’d be happy to see the CFP be shown for the farce it is.

So that SC gets in? Really? SC getting slobberknocked out of the CFP is one of the few positive things that have happened this college football season. They didn’t just lose. They got the sh-t beat out of them by a three loss team. No way they should get in. No matter what happens today.

RE: CFP - BostonCard - 12-03-2022

I don’t think USC is in under any circumstance.

Georgia is in, win or lose
Michigan is in, win or lose
Ohio State is in, as they have no games left
TCU was ahead of USC, so even if they lose, they should remain ahead of the Trojans.  But I think 10-2 Alabama gets in if TCU loses and your CFP ends up being two SEC teams and two Big Ten teams.

RE: CFP - Goose - 12-03-2022

IMO Georgia, Michigan, and TCU should be in as well, even if they lose today. They would be 13-1. tOSU should be in because they would be 11-1. All other "qualified" candidates have at least 2 losses and therefore have a lower winning percentage. Easy-peasy to figure this year out. No ambiguities about conference championships etc. Nobody (who is not overwhelmingly biased) is going to argue for LSU, Purdue, Kansas State or Utah as worthy selections. How am I wrong?

You're right, of course. Ya gotta win when you're playing the game you need to win. Maybe all of this palaver will cease when the 12-team tourney arrives. Then again...

TCU will get in unless they get hammered. Down 28-17 and driving.  Losing a relatively close game. Could drop them to 4. But I don’t think it knocks them out.  What would be interesting is if LSU beats Georgia.  Could that vault them in? (Edit : No way. Forgot they have 3 losses.).

TCU scores and gets a two point conversion to tie the game at 28-28 with 2 minutes left. So whatever happens they are not going to get hammered.
Game now in overtime.

RE: CFP - BostonCard - 12-03-2022

They are now in overtime.

BC

Yikes, TCU fails to score after going for it on fourth and goal in OT.  KSU can kick a field goal to win it.

RE: CFP - thunder_chik - 12-03-2022

TCU goes down in OT.

RE: CFP - BostonCard - 12-03-2022

Done, KSU wins in overtime with a field goal.  And Sonny Dykes continued inability to run when he needs to does him in.  TCU had 218 yards rushing, but in overtime and two chances to get one yard, they got nothing.

Good.  TCU should be 4th. But will probably be 3d.

Were I making the rules, the committee would select No 1, pick the other 3 and then No 1 gets to pick its opponent.

I think the best ranking would be:

1) Georgia
2) Michigan
3) TCU
4) Ohio State

That way, Michigan and Ohio State wouldn't face off immediately in the semi-finals.  And if both win, then they would be forced to face off again in the NC game.  They did this with (#3) Georgia and (#1) Alabama last year,, with Georgia eventually winning the rematch in the NC game.

Of course, this assumes both Georgia and Michigan win their conference championship games today.

RE: CFP - needle - 12-03-2022

Not following the SEC or Big 12 too closely this year, I had an open mind about Bama vaulting over TCU.

Looking at Sagarin, Bama was 4th while TCU ranked 7th. But TCU was actually 4-0 against top 20 teams as rated by Sagarin (somehow Sagarin thinks Baylor and Oklahoma are each top 20 teams despite having 6-6 records). Bama was 1-2 against top 20 teams, as rated by Sagarin.

TCU actually played a tougher schedule (rated 21st) overall compared to Bama (schedule rated 28).

So, while the computer backs up the eye test/common sense that Bama is better than TCU, I don’t think the evidence is overwhelming. TCU should be the choice for the CFP rather than be punished for qualifying for a conference championship game.

RE: CFP - French Rage - 12-03-2022

While I would give Alabama some leeway on two good losses, both to top 20, away, by a combined 4 points, I think you also need to see some good wins for teams, not just good losses.  All they really have there are wins over Texas and Miss St; Arkansas and Ole Miss were ranked when they played them, but really MissSt/OleMiss/Ark always get ranked at some point based on the fact they are SEC West and they never really earn it.  So not really that strong of a resume, as much as the guys calling this game might want it to be.

RE: CFP - Austroturf - 12-04-2022

Alabama is out.  There is no way the CFP committee will be able to justify putting them in over the two one-loss teams.  As I read elsewhere, if TCU's jerseys read "Oklahoma" and Bama's jerseys read "Ole Miss", we wouldn't even be speculating about this possibility.

The bigger question is whether Ohio State leapfrogs TCU.  I don't think that will happen for two reasons: 1) this would be punishing TCU for playing in a conference championship game and coming up inches short, while rewarding Ohio State for doing nothing this weekend and 2) a rematch of Michigan and Ohio State in the semi-finals would not have much spectator appeal.  That game just happened and was dubbed the "Game of the Year".  Hard to hype that contest again, unless it occurs in the National Championship game, which would only happen if Ohio State gets by Georgia and Michigan takes care of business vs. TCU.  Then there would be an all Big-Ten NC game similar to the Georgia-Alabama contest last year.  No issue hyping that contest.  In the end, it's all about the media dollars.

To me it’s about No 1 seed.  They should get to play the weakest of the four.  They earned that right.  TCU is the weakest.

It’s why I favor the No 1 getting to pick its opponent. Plus it would make for good theater.

But I think you have it nailed.  Money talks….

RE: CFP - Phogge - 12-04-2022

Who cares? The best outcome are great games. I’ve turned off too many playoff games because of routs and boredom.

I hope TCU is in because of Dykes and Duggan. I was hoping SC because Williams, when healthy, is the most exciting player in the country. Michigan offense has great players especially the OL and terrific CB’s.

Boring games drive me away.

RE: CFP - Giants - 12-04-2022

The final four was set up to avoid a Michigan/OSU rematch in the semis.  To Lex’s point, GA drew the short straw because there are three premium programs and one interloper.  Georgia should have been matched up against TCU rather than a powerhouse.

Having said that, given my disdain for Dykes, I like the idea of him facing off v. Harbaugh. I look forward to seeing his sour facial expressions throughout the game.

Go Harbaugh!

I agree with your assessment.  But an OSU/Michigan rematch in the semis would have been hard to sell.  The way it is now, the rematch only happens if Ohio State stuns the Bulldogs.  And frankly, I don't think that is going to happen.  Stroud will probably be scrambling for his life as the Georgia front seven comes bearing down on him.  Denying Georgia a 2nd consecutive national championship will be tough.  The only team that can do it is probably Michigan; and the CFP wanted that match-up in the NC game, so they designed the pairing to achieve that.
