Now that the season is over, I expect we will see players entering the portal. Right now, only graduates can do so, but the portal opens to undergraduates a week from today.
Here’s the first…

The first was Jonathan McGill.

Sorry it didn’t work out (and I thought the portal opened on Dec. 5 for undergrads).

Any player can enter the portal in the ensuing 30 days of a HC departure.

McGill in the transfer portal? Program rot. Pure and simple. We cannot get a new coach and a new culture fast enough. Our team captain is looking to transfer? When the two other starting safeties are also departing and the leadership said captain is best known for will be needed more than ever?
This is what happens when you create a culture of leaving and of four year football. We fetishize graduate degrees and lean in to optimizing personal value propositions so much that it becomes natural for players to think the grass is greener and search out other pastures accordingly. That's how you get some of your top players transferring out. It was Reid last year and now looks like it may be McGill this year.
We can't get a new coach/culture/locker room soon enough for many reasons, but one of them is so we can hopefully build a culture that is really about team rather than just paying lip service to it.

I'm willing to consider the possibility that any grad transfer didn't get admitted for a master's
I also don't get alarmed at any grad transfer. They came, they played, and they got their degree. Best luck in your next adventure.

Do you need to be admitted to a master's program to take a 5th year? You only need to be enrolled for fall quarter and it doesn't seem impossible to need the extra quarter to finish up your undergrad degree requirements.
RE: Portal tracker -
BostonCard - 11-28-2022
I don't think you need to be enrolled in a master's program, but anyone who doesn't intend to graduate within 12 quarters is supposed to file an academic plan, which includes a prompt to "Explain the extenuating circumstances that precluded the completion of your degree within twelve quarters."

No but if you are declaring as a grad transfer you need to be graduating this academic year.

I wish McGill worded his announcement like this! Nothing wrong with looking at your options, it's bailing on your brothers/seeking greener pastures regardless of what the coaching situation looks like that bothers me. Then again, if Stanford brought in a defensive stud like Fangio, Aranda, or Elko and we had defensive captains still leaving, they're probably not the type of people I want on the team anyway.

This is the new world.
If the new coach is acceptable to the player then they can elect to stay at the program. In many ways jumping into the portal highlights for the AD and the alums that the existing players are important members of the process too.
Guess we will see what Muir can find, but the portal activity was going to be in the mix. The sad reality is the new coach will not be able to use the portal as a turnaround tool like other new FBS coaches. The new coach will really need to love the idea of coaching at Stanford because portal attrition will be significant pre-hire, it will be significant post announcement, and it will not be offset by incoming transfers.
For example the current USC roster is loaded with players that were not at USC last year. That type of quick transformation will not be possible at Stanford. And given that, I anticipate a Haase-like 7-10 year plan may be seen as necessary and acceptable by Muir for the next football coach. :(
