Men's Soccer in NCAAs - DenverCard - 11-20-2022

Following WBB versus South Carolina, Men's Water Polo fighting to get an NCAA invite, and a day of NFL games, ginning up interest in a soccer game at the end of the weekend may be difficult.  But although the game of soccer often drives me nuts for what I consider its deficiencies, the exceedingly thin margin between success and failure puts one on the edge of his seat from the get-go.  So I'm definitely psyched for the game today (5:00 Pacific).

Had things gone according to plan, the Stanford Women's soccer team would have played UNC yesterday in North Carolina, and the men's team would be playing UNC at home today.  However, on the same day and on the same field where BYU eliminated the women's team -- the rather stunning UNC soccer facility -- High Point University upset the UNC men's team 2-0 to advance to play Stanford today.  I caught the second half of that game.  After apparently getting dominated by UNC in the first half (shots 7-1 in favor of the hosts), High Point got a cheap free kick for a hand ball from just outside the penalty area early in the 2nd half and scored on a deflection.  And while UNC was still in shock, High Point got a second goal 5' later.  They then went into a defensive shell and UNC unsuccessfully banged their head against the wall for the next 35'.

Per my limited research, High Point is a Methodist University located in North Carolina.  In learning that, I then noticed there are quite a few schools with religious affiliations in the men's tournament, whatever that signifies (SMU, California Baptist, Lipscomb, Seton Hall, Creighton).

Whereas the women's tournament invites 64 teams, the men's has only 48, 16 of which are seeded.  And this arrangement gives the seeded teams -- of which Stanford is #5 -- tremendous advantages.  High Point played on Thursday while Stanford rested.  High Point then had to travel cross country for today's game.  Stanford enjoys fan support and whatever subtle influence it has on the refereeing.  And Stanford had the opportunity to watch High Point v. UNC.

High Point went 5-0-3 in their conference (Big South) but that only got them 2nd place, which likely made it necessary that they with the conference tournament to make NCAAs, which they did.  Out of conference, they played four NCAA tourney teams that are among the 32 that have advanced (by win or seed).  They beat Maryland, tied Georgetown, lost to Duke, and lost to UNC Greensboro 5-1.  And if Stanford beats High Point, their next opponent -- if seeding holds -- will be UNC Greensboro.

In beating UNC, High Point advanced for the first time ever in the tourney.  Hoping they'll be simply satisfied with a trip to California for winning and that Stanford puts them on the defensive throughout.  Also hoping that Stanford's starters who were injured earlier in the year -- Fletcher Bank and Mark Fisher -- might be ready to play.  Bank was injured earlier in the season and therefore might be further along in his recovery, and he is one of the few Stanford players who can beat a defender one-on-one.  Fisher steadies the midfield and allows Will Reilly to get more involved in the offense.  A return of one or both would be nice.

4-0 Stanford, in the first half.  Nice.

RE: Men's Soccer in NCAAs - Spiny_Norman - 11-20-2022

6-2 final for the good guys. They will play UNC Greensboro in the next round.

In the other half of the bracket, #4 seed Indiana lost to Marshall. Stanford is the highest seeded team in this quarter of the bracket. Does that mean that Stanford will host round of 16 and the quarterfinal?

Creighton knocks off #2 seed Washington.

Unseeded UCLA upsets defending NC Clemson.

Oregon State is scoreless with Portland in the 2H.

RE: Men's Soccer in NCAAs - Spiny_Norman - 11-20-2022

After the round of 32, the 2, 4, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 16 seeds are out.

RE: Men's Soccer in NCAAs - DenverCard - 11-20-2022

Stanford looked like Manchester City today.  The offense in the first half was, as they say in soccer circles, "clinical."  When they had a good chance, their passing was spot on.  Best I've seen them look in years.

Stanford hosts the next round against UNC Greensboro, which beat Ohio State on penalty kicks. (I haven't looked up the stats of that game to gain a sense of who had the better of the play.)  Following the upset of Virginia, Stanford would host the quarterfinals if they get past UNC-G.

My only complaint from today is that the camera set-up at Cagan leave much to be desired compared to some other venues.  I looked in on UCLA-Clemson, for example, and the video put you much closer to the action.  At Stanford the players appear much father away.  As well, the replays were infrequent.  (Perhaps I'm too used to football, where you see every play three times or more.)  Perhaps better equipment can be used as Stanford advance.  Phogge?  (As if he reads the soccer threads.)

Numerous seeds fell today: #2 Washington, #4 UVA, #6 Clemson. #8 OSU was dominating the play, but as noted by Spiny, it was 0-0 at half. But one game at a time.  UNC-G is likely to be very tough out.

I agree! The quality of the video was horrendous. There were times where I was watching the back of someone’s head. Lack of replay of scoring plays or the wrong replay shown.

Stanford played really well. Passes were crisp and accurate. Liam Doyle’s free kick was masterful. Glad to see Fletcher Bank back.

Bump.

There’s a NCAA tournament game at Stanford today. Tickets are STILL available and cheaper than several other sports. The weather will be good, if a CD bit chilly.

If someone watches one ESPN+ game at 4:30 (WBB) and another game of interest comes on at 5:00 (MSoccer), do you get the capability of watching one in replay?  Is it the same ESPN system of not letting you skip forward at all?

RE: Men's Soccer in NCAAs - ca245 - 11-27-2022

There is a tab called “Schedule & Replays” but I am not sure which replays are available.
As for myself, I plan to have the WVB selection show on the TV, the WBB game on my iPad, and the MSoc on my MacBook, giving my eyeballs a workout. All three are on simultaneously between 5:00 and 5:30.
Haven’t decided yet which audio I will go with; probably the WVB.

Replays are available for all games however you will have to wait for the game to finish before the replay is available. No joining the game live and rewinding.
I'd say about 10 min after the game has finished it will be available to watch. That's what I will do for the men's game tonight because I want to watch the WBB game first.

RE: Men's Soccer in NCAAs - BostonCard - 11-27-2022

1-1 middle of the first half.

Halftime score is 1-1.  Stanford has more shots, though UNC-Greensborough has more shots on goal.

Still 1-1 with 20 minutes to go in the game.  I hope this doesn’t come down to penalties.

RE: Men's Soccer in NCAAs - M T - 11-27-2022

After 4 periods, it is still 1-1.  Stanford 12 shots, 4 on goal.  UNCG 3 shots, 2 on goal.

Stanford fails on the first two PKs. UNCG fails on their second PK.
Stanford fails on the third PK. UNCG is now up 2-0.
Stanford finally gets a goal on the 4th PK.

UNCG wins on PK 3-1.

By the way, I'm unhappy with GoStanford.com for not indicating KZSU had audio. GoStanford.com only offered the paywalled ESPN+ for video and listed no audio option.

We've fallen short of expectations in just about every fall sport.
