It is great that Gu is speaking up for social justice causes, but I hope she also takes time to champion important social justice issues, such as the treatment of Uyghurs, in the country she competes for.

So, she speaks out regarding US social justice issues. Then competes for China. She’s young. So, I’ll give her a little benefit of the doubt. But not much. Hypocrisy. And. Why do I think any position she takes is in line with what will further her career and fatten her pocketbook.

Frankly, I'm stunned and disappointed by the lack of tolerance for Gu shown by some on this site. She's 19 and still trying to find her voice and her way through two worlds. Give her a chance. Support her and welcome her to Stanford. Perhaps she'll be an inspiration to hundreds of millions of girls around the world. Oh wait, she already is. . . .

Stunned? Really? IIRC you were pretty much her only supporter on the last Gu thread we had, apart from that weird tankie.
Lack of tolerance also seems to be a pretty bad phrasing. If I say she's a hypocrite who places money above morals am I being intolerant?

Hypocritical, perhaps. Intolerant. Absolutely. Have you called out the NBA? Kerr? Curry? They make much, much than Gu does, and they're adults, yet are silent on Taiwan and on the Uighurs. Easy to take shots at a young Asian American girl who hasn't even started college yet, isn't it. . . .

I'm with ya, Crimson. Pretty much a lib on most issues, and abhor China's policy. But she's 19, actually has quite a following among young girls. If and when she does decide to speak out, it will have an impact. I mostly find her remarkable. Whole NBA approach re China is a farce if you focus on their treatment.

I’ve called out the NBA for its hypocrisy, and more broadly corporations, and there are many, who kowtow to the CCP. I don’t have an issue with Gu or Kerr or Lebrun James or Apple standing up and demanding better from the United States; the fact that they can do so without suffering major consequences is the key difference between the US and China. I do have an issue when they turn around and are silent about the CCP, while at the same time profiting from their silence.

I would say it's pretty infantilizing of you to refer to her as a girl.
