2022 Stanford at Washington Predictions Thread - george - 09-18-2022

Hey lex24, and Langdude: Be sure to use the predictions widget -- I've put in your missing scores and you two are in first and second place, but from now on you've gotta play like the rest of us :).

Speaking of the rest of us, how are we feeling about the Huskies? So far the braintrust is 2-0 in picking correctly.

Wow. I guess reading the simple rules don't matter for some. . . .What's next, Phogge saying that he really meant what he posted in the thread versus what was listed in the widget? Might give him an extra 50 points!

Spread opened at 9.5, now it's 12.5. Over under up to 61.5 from 55.5. Huskies 3-0 verses the spread, Stanford 0-2. All five games have been over.

Huskies coming off a big win, somehow, we keep it close. 38-31 Dawgs.

Just finished watching the first 3 quarters of the Washington-Michigan State game, and it is bad news.

1. That team tackles really hard.
2. Their quarterback can throw great, and they have some good receivers.
3. Their defense swarms
4. The noise in their stadium is legendary. Just imagine how fired up they are going to be after their Michigan State win. It is going to be deafening. At multiple key junctures, Michigan State’s offense looked unable to communicate and befuddled on third down. I don’t think this Stanford team has ever played in a loud stadium before.
5. Their defensive front 7 was stuffing the inside running game
6. Their d backs, though beatable, swarm to the ball.

One thing I really want to point out about the Washington - Michigan State game is how much Washington cheats. I can’t recall ever seeing a team cheat so much and not get called on it. It felt like their linemen should have been called for egregiously holding every third play. Their defensive backs, when beaten, hold, and didn’t get called. Even their receivers pushed the Michigan State secondary out of the way. So, the score with Michigan State should have been much closer. Sometimes you get weird officiating with those inter-conference games. I expect the Pac 12 officials will call the penalties. And so, who knows how many points Washington scores if you actually call them on their pass interference and “blocking” in the back? If there are a bunch of 2nd and 20s, maybe they get exposed, maybe they turn the ball over.

They are also a little banged up and Penix started throwing worse the more he got hit. They seemed to lose an offensive lineman in the 3rd.

Even still, unless Stanford can make a stunning improvement and can play in the noise (without any experience doing so), I think the swarming, hard-hitting Washington defense and thunderous stadium befuddles the Cardinal offense enough for the Huskies to take a big lead and hold onto it.

Maybe Stanford can get to Penix and make him have an off day. Maybe Shaw and all have spent the last two weeks getting the receivers able hold onto ball like they were able to just a few years ago. Maybe the running backs will no longer cough up the ball. Maybe Washington gets a bit exposed when someone actually callls them on their penalties. Maybe the defensive linemen can take off the training wheels and get to the quarterback, even though many of them are frosh. Maybe Shaw stops making excuses about how hard it is to play in a loud stadium and actually brings a team ready to quiet the Dog Pound. I hope so, but this week, I am not betting on it.

For all the reasons you cited, it would be quite a surprise to me if this game is close after three quarters. But, stranger things have happened.

Looking over the Huskies first two games is less than helpful (Kent State, Portland State). The Huskie's third game 39-28 win against Michigan State on the other hand is intimidating.

Sure this was the Spartans first challenging game after wins against Akron and Western Michigan but they were good in 2021 finishing 3rd in the Big 10 East with a signature win against Harbaugh's squad (37-33).

I'm forecasting UW puts up the same numbers against our defense (charitable) and we can't quite match the Spartans score. Sigh ... I don't like it but it seems about right. We'll know a lot more about our team after this game.

When the Huskies are good, as they appear to be this year, they are very tough to beat in Seattle.
We went through a 30 year period beginning in the mid '70's when we didn't win once there.
The score could be anywhere from a blowout to a reasonably close game in their favor, but I will be very pleasantly surprised if we emerge victorious.

Penix is really fun to watch, but he hasn't played more than 6 games in a season (I think I heard) because he gets hurt all the time. He was banged up at the end of the MSU game. I think he gets hurt (not that our DL hits him) when he stumbles. Then, their offense melts, and the refs call fouls, and we keep it close, and lose 35-28.

I want to believe in miracles. SU 33, UW 31. McKee has his best game ever. We score 4 TDs, 2 FG, and miss one PAT. They score 4 TDs and a FG. With 2 seconds to go, UW attempts a FG to win the game...and it's wide to the left.

Eeesh, with EJ out... Huskies blitz a lot; they won't respect the run.
What about Arlen Harris, Jr (another son of an NFLer)? Burn a red shirt?
McKee will throw 50+ times with the Receiving Corp 7 or 8 deep. INTs? Screen plays to jitterbug Filkens.
We get a TD and three FGs = 16.
Dawgs grab 4 TDs and couple FGs = 34, coming off the MIST win in WA.
Our Defensive line is not enough to force 4th downs -- so we need to get turnovers.
Crowd noise in Seattle will be a lot different than PA.

Huskies do not play U$C, so their toughest game remaining is at Oregon Nov. 12.
-- Apple Cup is not a gimme; but Huskies could run the table with what they have left to play.

After Smith's injury and listening to a less than inspiring interview with Shaw this afternoon, I've lowered my Stanford prediction by four, and added three to Washington. 41 to 27. Dawgs.

With a 7:30 pm start, I give my over under at 9:16 as to when I fall asleep in the chair watching the game.
