Throwing Out the Rule Book

Pull up a chair, sports fans. The past century’s paradigm—in which student-athletes compete in exchange for an education—is being upended. And where the ball will land is anyone’s guess.

That is an excellent read by my classmate. I appreciate the perspectives from Tara in particular.  I do wonder a bit if someone without much knowledge could read it and not understand how dire the situation is becoming for a university with Stanford's mission.  Maisel's comment about "the sparsely populated Venn diagram of academic and athletic excellence" is only the beginning of the problem.

Interesting note in the article...only 54% of the athletes entering the portal actually transfer. The rest remain or drop the sport.

A really interesting article, and fascinating to read it today, in August 2023. Note the article is from Sept 2022, and in some important ways, it's already outdated. But not irrelevant, and not insightful. Really worth reading. Thanks for posting.
