Right on the money, Glenn!

Just a slight correction for historical accuracy - Redrum - 06-29-2010

Amurican football IS an English sport run amok.  It morphed out of rugby, which was played by college club teams and gawd knows who else.  Stanford even got a jump on political correctness by dropping football in the early years of the century.   Although our success on the field in this century could be construed that we did, indeed, drop football  under Buddy and Wlat, it might be the ONLY thing we can\'t blame on them.  Many colleges dropped football and played rugby in the early years of last century, the 20th.   A whole movement about the violence of football was the spur.  What Gerhart did to hapless defensive backs trying to tackle him would have gotten him prosecuted for mayhem back then.

Nah, Gerhart\'s running would\'ve been par for the course. Helpful hint to sports everywhere: if Teddy Roosevelt thinks your sport is too violent, it\'s almost certainly too violent. (Roosevelt started the reform of football that led to the forward pass being legalized; before it was kind of a wink-wink affair that was disdained by Real Men of Football. And afterwards, for a long while, it was disdained by Real Men of Football.)

Teddy\'s tenure was also when the NCAA was established after a rash of football-related deaths, iirc.  Ironic given that I\'m now secretly rooting for the NCAA to kill off the USC football program :p
