Scott Frost throws offensive assistants under the bus - Mick - 08-28-2022

Former Stanford/Husker QB Scott Frost criticized his offensive coaches after their 31-28 loss to Northwestern.

"I think our offensive staff has to learn you've got to be a little more creative in this league."

Pretty mild.  And he didn't criticize the defensive coaches whose defense gave up 31 points. The last sentence of the article is a comment on Coach Frost's status at Nebraska.

I don't follow his career.  Is it possible that he includes himself when referring to "our offensive staff"?

Probably not since he no longer calls their plays.  He did call the on-side kick when up by 11 in the third quarter that Northwestern recovered and quickly scored a TD to start their comeback

Read the whole thing and it isn't so bad. Especially for a coach who is on the ropes.
I wonder what Mike Leach would have said?

Sometimes you can’t go home again. I think Evelyn Waugh may have written that.

Don’t have a dog in the Scott Frost fight, but he said “we” when referring to offensive staff.  Why you onside kick up  11 is beyond me.

Is it just my screen, but is the above quote in the tiniest font ever? I've noticed that when I cut and past on this site, it get the same, tiny font. Odd.

Scott Frost probably deserves to be fired more than any coach in America. Just awful.

Well, maybe he knew how bad his defense actually was and felt he needed more points :-)? Seriously, I can't imagine why anybody would do such a thing unless you had seen several times their kickoff receiving team all turning their backs and running as the kicker starts. MAYBE then it makes sense. Otherwise???

On this subject, without quoting any data or statistics, I completely agree. It hasn't "worked" for him at Nebraska and he hasn't brought any particular credit to the University by his conduct. He should go. Whether they can get somebody who will be "better" is another issue, but Frost clearly isn't the one to lead Nebraska football  IMHO. Nebraska has reached the "Anybody but him" level.

Frost's buyout gets cut in half (by $7.5M) on October 2nd.

Between now and Oct 2, Nebraska plays North Dakota, Georgia Southern, #9 Oklahoma, and Indiana, all at home. If he goes 4-0, do they fire him? I honestly don't know what Nebraska will do in that event. I guess another question would be when does his buyout go to zero? Is it right after this season or after the start of next season? I have no idea how much the boosters will pony up, but the University itself may be "cost conscious".

No idea, but I will tell you that Indiana is not expected to be that good (nor is Northwestern). Going 3-1 should be table stakes in these next 4. Obviously losses in either of the first 2 would be death sentences, but I'd guess they will win. IMO the real hinge game is Indiana. If they lose to Indiana, and his buyout gets halved the next day, I'd consider that perfect timing for Frost to be tarmac'ed at home.

Sounds reasonable. It wouldn't surprise me if they wait until Oct 2 to fire him having already decided to do so earlier. Doing so if he goes 4-0 might be harder. The 7.5 M is a big deal. It also wouldn't surprise me if they don't fire him until after the season no matter how bad things get. Finding a replacement will be difficult IMHO and the pool of available choices during the season is a void. Frost's staff also doesn't appear to have anybody on it who would be better for the remainder of the season. No painless choices.

The board software's way of letting you paste formatted html into a post seems to not work very well. You can clean up the results by using the last icon at the top of the message entry box, the one that looks like a page of text, to show all the formatting tags. Then remove the size=1 tag (or whatever else causes a problem). Use Full Edit if editing an existing post or you won't get the icons.

RE: Scott Frost throws offensive assistants under the bus - BostonCard - 08-28-2022

Bear in mind that with the Big Ten’s new TV deal, the buyout should amount to a drop in the bucket.  My guess is that Frost’s days are numbered.

I went back and fixed the formatting for the quote.

By the way, if you paste text in the “plain text” mode (not in WYSIWYG mode) then it strips out the formatting automatically.

It's never THAT difficult to fill a Power Five head coaching job. Lots of people would would want that job.

The obvious advantage for any Power Five team that moves swiftly in canning an under-performing coach this fall: potentially being front of the line for a recharged Bronco Mendenhall. That would be Christmas in September or October or November for any team that moved fast. Or, I suppose, he could wait for the landscape to be clearer. But if Nebraska comes calling, does he turn that down?

Yes, he does turn it down. Nebraska is not a good place to be in the current college football scene but the alums/fans don't get that. While it is true there are worse places to be, Nebraska is IMHO a "too hard to do" case. First tier coaches aren't going there.

I think we can all agree it would be almost unthinkable for some coach to leave one school a month into the season to go coach at another that season. The OP must be talking about being first in line for coaches that are presently unemployed. I just don't see any of these coaches joining in mid-season. I could see it under very exceptional conditions, but if the current coach is being let go for football performance issues, would anybody jump in mid-season that wasn't even at the University previously?

Frankly, I would be more than a bit suspicious of any coach who entertained offers during a football season while he is employed elsewhere. I know the Sonny Dykes of the world do that, but as a University administrator I wouldn't want to hire that type of guy. Coaches need to feel some basic responsibility to their employer and the players. After the season, it is OK to listen. During the season, IMHO, it isn't. You should be 100% focused on your current job.
