Andrew Luck is getting close to breaking several significant Stanford records. He has a chance to tie or break the following records this week against UC Berkeley:
Most TD Passes, Career
77Â John Elway
74Â Andrew Luck
72Â Steve Stenstrom
52Â Jim Plunkett
Most TD Passes, Season
32Â Andrew Luck, 2010
29Â Andrew Luck, 2011 to date
27Â John Elway, 1980
27Â Steve Stenstrom, 1993
Most Total Offense, Career
9,825Â Steve Stenstrom
9,549Â Andrew Luck
9,070Â John Elway
7,887Â Jim Plunkett

My guess is he breaks all three of them.

I realize the official records are only kept of the totals but does anyone happen to know what the per-game numbers are for TD passes and total offense?
I'm not implying the per-game numbers are necessarily more relevant -- there are other variables that change over time that are even harder to normalize -- but just curious.

Stanford doesn't publish stats on a per-game basis.
I don't have enough data to calculate good per-game stats for all players. The missing piece of data for many players is the number of games in a given year. To prepare good per-game stats, I would need to go back to each season's stats and figure out how many games each player played that year.

For many years, bowl game stats were not included in the official stats. In 2002, the NCAA changed that policy and started including bowl game stats in the official stats. This change was not retroactive. The NCAA stated that the new policy would be in effect going forward, but pre-2002 stats would not be revised retroactively to include bowl games.
The Pac 10 nevertheless decided that it would implement the new policy retroactively (for most purposes). The Pac 12 record book therefore includes stats from pre-2002 bowl games (for most purposes).
This means that the NCAA record book and the Pac 12 record book are inconsistent in some places. For example, if you look up the career all-purpose yardage total for Darrin Nelson or the career rushing total for Marcus Allen, the NCAA record book and the Pac 12 record book will give you different numbers.
Stanford follows the NCAA's policy and has not retroactively changed its pre-2002 records. So, Stanford's record book is consistent with the NCAA record book, but not always consistent with the Pac 12 record book. The stats listed in my earlier post are from Stanford's record book, and do not include pre-2002 bowl games.
Including bowl games, the stats in my earlier post would be as follows. The changes reflect bowl game stats for Jim Plunkett and Steve Stenstrom:
Most TD Passes, Career
77Â John Elway
75Â Steve Stenstrom
74Â Andrew Luck
53Â Jim Plunkett
Most TD Passes, Season
32Â Andrew Luck, 2010
29Â Steve Stenstrom, 1993
29Â Andrew Luck, 2011 to date
27Â John Elway, 1980
Most Total Offense, Career
10,179Â Steve Stenstrom
9,549Â Andrew Luck
9,070Â John Elway
8,178Â Jim Plunkett

Elway did all that without the benefits of ANY bowl games...

Two words:Â Kenny Margerum [for at least two years, I think].Â
That is not meant to be a slight on anyone -- Elway, Luck, Owusu, the Whalii, Baldwin, or anyone else -- but I have found myself wondering on a number of occasions [including after seeing him walking around Chuck Taylor Grove on Saturday before the game], what if Luck had Margerum to throw to on some of those deep routes this year? A guy can dream...

Kenny is over 50, so I'm not sure he could still get open against Pac 12 defenses. . . .
