The Atlantic and Pacific Conference - rastaman85 - 07-01-2022

…aka “the A&P”.

Assuming the B1G eventually pulls Oregon, Washington, and Utah (sadly, I fear that Utah is more attractive than we are), and the SEC pulls Clemson, Miami, and Florida St.

For football, this gives an 8-game round robin schedule within the division, a rotating cross-country game, and the ability to schedule three other non-conference games. The conference championship could rotate between Charlotte, Vegas, Phoenix, and a NFL stadium in the NE (Gillette? Heinz?)

We also preserve some rivalries, and I can imagine WSU and OSU growing some good old-fashioned hate (seems a bit inappropriate to use that phrase in the current global climate, but oh well).
MBB and WBB could be pretty darn good, if the non-Arizona/Gonzaga West can hold up it’s end of the bargain. Maybe include a few cross country matchups each season—I think annual WBB matchups against Duke could be fun, and Gonzaga-Carolina and Arizona-Duke could be must-watch TV in MBB.

And yes, I admit I’m grasping at straws. The thought of D1-AA (or worse) Stanford football hurts.

Right now there are a few 1AA schools with better football than Stanford. Problem is there are not too many on the Pacific Coast. A football move into 1AA independence would, at this time, make for better competition for Stanford. Big loss of TV money would probably mean a dumping of non revenue sports.

Unless Stanford is invited into the Big 20 it's a loss/loss situation to continue playing football.

I don't see how the Domers can stay independent and continue to be relevant.

The SF State freshman team used to play at Q. My pal actually kicked a PAT over a wall. We did a Gumbal story on Q baseball. Interviewed the pitching coach who said he was #1 on a St. Johns staff that also had John Franco and Frank Viola. Big guy resembled Randy J. When Bryant asked him why his quick minor league career ended he said, "Made the mistake of killing my wife."

Clemson, Fla. State and Miami, along with all the other ACC schools are in the worst position of anyone (incl. the Pac12 schools) because the current ACC GoR doesn’t expire until 2036. The questions only an attorney with significant contract experience can answer - Can the GoR be broken? What would be the cost? Would be worth the time, trouble and expense?

SC and UCLA were fortunate because the P12 GoR expires in July 2024 allowing them to move to the B10 without compensation to the conference.

Around 1961, my dad's softball team played the prison team at Lompoc. The CF on the prison team tried to escape by climbing the CF chain link wall. A Lompoc guard shot him and they left him there for the remainder of the game.

Fantastic! Mental error?

One of the guards told dad (unofficially) that there had been numerous escape attempts and they wanted to send a message to the inmates.

Dad did say that they received a tour of the prison. He saw a high school classmate behind bars, one who was known for breaking into houses and stealing what was there. He said they locked eyes for a long moment. Abject misery.

A former softball teammate of mine was on the same staff on St John's and told me his name--Chris Rich.

I have no desire to see the piece again but it must be around on some site. Bryant was actively engaged in it which was unusual. We interviewed the second baseman who had a sad story about being a third strike loser (no joke). Nabbed the last time for felony theft of a measly amount. He cried on camera. He said that without baseball he would be dead. Later on we did a walk and talk with the warden on the roof of Death Row. In the 70’s I shot pool footage the day that the death penalty was overturned. A POV walk from the holding cell to the chamber. Surprised that there were side by side seats. I sat down and the CO closed the door on me. Weird.

The PACC

Both conferences names preserved, good to great academic standing schools, regions create clear divisions where most traditional games can be preserved with a couple of long trips per season. Powerhouses in every Sport, easily creates a third conference rivaling the other two. Save face. Screw USC and UCLA and leave them out in the cold. Literally.
