WGolf - NATIONAL CHAMPIONS!!! - winflop - 05-19-2022

Stanford Women's Golf begins its quest for a national championship tomorrow (Fri 5/20) through Wed 5/25. TV coverage on Golf Channel Mon 5/23 2-6p Pacific (stroke play final round), Tue 5/24 9a-1130a (match play quarterfinals) & 2p-6p (match play semifinals), and Wed 5/25 2p-6p (finals)

Stanford is the #1 seed in a jam-packed field of quality teams. The first four days are stroke play to determine the individual national champion and also to determine the eight teams who will have a match play tournament over the final two days for the team national champion.

Stanford's lineup is not surprising:
1. Rose Zhang
2. Brooke Seay
3. Aline Krauter
4. Sadie Englemann
5. Rachel Heck
A. Caroline Sturdza

Sturdza should see at least one round of stroke play, possibly two, and Stanford is expected to make the cut for match play. Zhang will be a top contender for the individual title, but watch out for Seay.

Match play is a bit of a crap shoot, but I like our chances especially if Heck's health holds up enough for her to play at least two of the three matches.

Unfortunate that the temperature will be in the upper 90s (except "only" 93 on Saturday), which I would guess is going to make it harder for Heck to maintain her stamina.

Latest forecast I've seen is high of 94 today and a steady climb in high temps all the way through the tournament to 104 by Wednesday. It's going to be hard on EVERYONE to maintain their stamina. Could actually be an equalizer

Heck got a birdie to finish the back nine at +2 which is fine. Englemann also at +2. We are at even par as a team almost halfway through; if we can finish around that mark as a team, it's clear that would be a good first round. We're about to hit the first hole, though, which is playing the toughest.

Update: Wow, we're now at -3, 5 strokes clear of second-place FSU. That's all I dare say.

Coming back to the pack a bit at+1, but still in first place, with about three holes to go.  Still, not a ton of space separating the top 8 teams, so we will have to keep it up.

What a round from Sadie Englemann though! Still some dominoes to fall, but with her in the clubhouse, she's standing at a tie for fourth.

Stanford's first day is complete, and so far so good. They sit at the top, mainly due to great play from Rose Zhang and Sadie Englemann (!). The rest of the team struggled a little bit, but clearly the course played really tough today when you look at the scores across the field. Keep in mind pretty much every top team and top player is here, and yet the low team score is OVER par.
1. Stanford +1
2. Texas A&M +4
T3. UCLA & Florida St +7
T5. ASU, Auburn, LSU +8

Rose Zhang is right where you'd expect her to be (first place), but HELLO SADIE ENGLEMANN!!! She made a turkey on her back nine (three birdies in a row) and was one of only FIVE players to finish under par. The other three struggled a bit. Heck with a very uncharacteristic pair of double bogeys, while Seay & Krauter were both +4 on their back nine (team started on #10).
1. Zhang -4
T3. Englemann -1
T49. Seay & Krauter +3
T63. Heck +4

Given the heat, good first round, and wanting to make sure Heck stays rested for this marathon tournament, I expect to see Sturdza in her spot tomorrow. Heck is listed in the second round pairings but I don't expect that to remain the case. Coach Walker can wait until tomorrow morning to decide, but my guess is that she makes a decision today so that Sturdza can be mentally ready. We are first off the #1 tee tomorrow, starting at 6:30am (GULP). GO CARD!

That means an awfully early wake-up time. At least it'll be in the 70's when they start play.

I would rather have the early start time, heat will not be such an issue and after today, they need that difference.

That 3-stroke lead after the first round was gone after the first hole, and Stanford dropped to +8 for the tournament before getting a couple back. Zhang is at even par through 12, and everyone else is over par, though Heck is in second at +1.

We need to take advantage of 15-18, which are playing in the bottom half of difficulty today. Heck just helped with a birdie on 17; she's coming through for us today at even par for the round, as is Zhang. At +6 we're only 7 away from the cut line, but most of the other top teams haven't started playing yet so they'll lose more ground to par during the afternoon.

Second-seeded Oregon, who we are paired with, is outplaying us today. They've made up 5 strokes and are only 3 behind us now.

The goal is to be ahead of the 9th place team after 72 holes to qualify for match play. Stanford is well-positioned for that after a 2nd round score of 292, +4. We'll know their final placement for the day after the afternoon teams complete their rounds.

Stanford is at +5 for 36 holes. Consider the position of some other top 10 teams. #5 San Jose State had to count two rounds of 80 today and is at +27. Defending national runner up and #6 Oklahoma State is at +31. #3 South Carolina is at +30. #4 Wake Forest is at +29. The golf course is playing tough for a lot of top teams. Stanford has held up well so far.

Crazy that the 3, 4, 5,6, 8, and 9 seeded teams are fighting for last place.  Of the top 10, only Stanford, Oregon, and ASU are in the top 8.
