WBB: 1st game Stanford 97 Cal 74 -
81alum - 01-19-2022
Preview:
Stanford plays Cal twice this weekend, providing that everyone is healthy enough not to cancel. Cal postponed both games last weekend.
Cal is 9-4, 0-2 in conference having lost to Oregon and WSU. Charmin Smith, a guard for us who graduated in 1997, has been coaching at Cal for 15 years, and head coach now in her 3rd year. Cal is still in what we might call a rebuilding year.
If she is healthy and playing, Cal's biggest threat is freshman sensation Jayda Curry. This 5'6" guard from Corona is averaging 20 ppg--that is astonishing for a freshman. She hits 42% of her shots and 36% from three point range.
Leilani McIntosh, now a junior, is a 5'5" guard who is leading the team in assists but is well down the list in scoring.
Evelien Lutje-Schipholt, a 6'2" forward from Holland, is their best "big," averaging 11 points and 8 rebounds per game.
9 players average more than 10 minutes, so Cal is deep in that sense.
Cal seems shorter than we are at every position. They make 5-6 three pointers a game, which is probably above average. Their rebounding and turnovers seem even with their opponents and pretty average. They force 8 steals a game, which is quite good and probably reflects their speedy little guards.
If we have any trouble with Cal this weekend, it would have to be because we turned the ball over a lot and they got hot from three point range. Both are possibilities. Otherwise I don't see them posing a great challenge. On the other hand, a healthy Jayda Curry could always have one of those nights like Alexis Gray-Lawson and carry team on her back. Shutting her down will be a top priority.

All I can say is, this is not going to be pretty for Cal....

Could one of the admins update the FAQ and discuss the woofing gods? Can we make that required reading? Maybe a pinned post "Rules for fans and boosters regarding woofing."
Rivalry games are well known to not be governed by who should win.
Especially in this time of COVID, all kinds of issues can happen to any players and any team.
Any team with 17 on the roster could have to play a game without their best 9 players being available. Those last 8 might be decent players, but how much have they played as a team, in the spotlight, without some experienced player to keep them from melting down? Just imagine 40 minutes of garbage time.... or WORSE, 80 minutes. (Whew.... Whether we played with our 8 shortest or 8 tallest players, there'd be a 6'1" player, but we could be forced to play as an all-guard team.)
How many times have I seen a good Stanford team get ahead, have the refs start calling mercy fouls against Stanford, and then have Stanford collapse or nearly collapse?
These are rivalry games. Anything can happen. Why, we could win by 9 in the first game, and then, days later, lose by 12 in the second. Nightmares happen.
I am NOT a fan of playing the same team twice in the same week.

I agree MT, and I outlined how it could happen. Is it likely? No. But neither was it likely when Alexis Gray-Lawson beat us almost single handedly, and in their star freshman Jayda Curry they have someone who is capably of "going off" like that. So Cal has beaten us before when we were heavily favored, and as you said, we have split games days apart for no apparent reason.
I also do not like playing games so close to each other. It does make it far, far easier for Tara's style of defense to be perfected, though, since there is only one scouting report to master and it can be adjusted between games 1 and 2 without reinventing the wheel.
But yes, probably the biggest threat is that we lose a bunch of players to illness. That can shake up the best laid plans. But that has been true all year.

Wise, mature, and measured words.
But nah, "We smoke these guys."

Cardboard rules should not be determined by superstition, astrology, witchcraft, tarot cards, ouija boards, or fear of woofing gods.
No prediction on this message board is going to change the outcome of this game or any other game.

The woofing gods would be good FAQ material anyway. We do have some humor in the FAQ. Of course there won't be a no woofing
rule.

I think it's most important that the players and coaches don't get comfortable or complacent, but I know fans can be superstitious as well, since as we all know, wearing the wrong sweatshirt or sitting on the opposite side of the couch can totally affect the team's shooting percentage.

I totally change my "game shirt" after losses and even switch caps mid-game to give us better mojo. Because we make a difference.

My husband sets out a line of m&ms and eats them one by one during games. But much more important and impactful, I drink a can of diet Dr Pepper, has to be in a can, before the game starts. That is crucial!

While what we say here will no more change the shooting percentages than the breeze from a butterfly's wings, I do think it is wise to avoid woofing.
Consider 4 scenarios: the Cardinal as winner/loser and woofer/woofee.
If a woofer's team wins, woofing before hand only makes him/her feel smugger. I think that's a good way to fall further later.
The opponent might not feel much different, but might be more resentful and more determined to do whatever it takes for the next game.
If a woofer's team loses, woofing before hand only makes the loss harder to take, and to make him/her a big target for the opponent.
The opponent is going to be more joyous and rightfully has good reason to rub the woofer's nose in it.
And, if that isn't enough, think of how the woofer looks to a third party.
Celebrate any victory that the team earns, but remember why the game is played.
OTOH, if Cardboard woofing is posted in an opponent's locker room, maybe it might help motivate them to prove us wrong.

If TheCardboard were posted in an opponent's locker room, that would be awesome (and hilarious), win or lose. =)

Anyone else watching the games on Sling? I need to record tonight's game, but can't find it anywhere on Sling. I talked to a custom service rep and she said it might be a Pac-12 decision not to air on Sling, but that makes no sense since Sunday's game is already up on the site to record. Any advice appreciated.

Same here. The Stanford schedule says Pac-12 Network. Are they planning on just streaming it? Crazy that the Oregon/UW game is showing on all of the Network stations.
I'm also trying to figure out the Our Stories. I tried recording it via Sling's "DVR", but all I got was some Utah game. If I try to watch it via the Pac-12 site, it redirects me to Sling (with other providers, you can just enter your login information and watch it directly from Pac-12). Seriously out of my mind over this trying to watch it since last Saturday. (And you know that ain't pretty...).

Ha. Just found it - go to "Guide" at the top banner menu, select Pac-12 channel and the game is listed. I think it was a late add.

I have Comcast cable service. Per its TV guide, PAC-12 Bay Area (Ch. 1330) will show the Cal game live at 7 PM, but PAC-12 Net (Ch. 823) will show the UO/UW game instead.

I have Spectrum cable . Currently there is a rerun of last year's Cal vs Stanford WBB on PAC-12 Bay Area. During this game they are advertising a women's gymnastics match will be shown from 6pm to 8pm. Also my Spectrum guide shows gymnastics from 6 to 8. So I'm not clear what programming will show up at 7pm.
