Men's BB: Stanford @ Diamond Head Classic, 12/22-25 - Papa John - 12-21-2021

The Stanford men (127 NET ranking) are spending the early part of the holidays on Oahu in an eight-team tournament that also includes BYU (25), Hawaii (215), Liberty (128), Northern Iowa (162), South Florida (262), Vanderbilt (99) and Wyoming (19).

The bracket is here: https://espnevents.com/hawaiian-airlines-diamond-head-classic/bracket/

Stanford drew Wyoming for its opening game on Wednesday at 2:30 pm Pacific time (or 20 minutes following the early game). My cable provider is showing the game on ESPNU, although that is sometimes variable.

Wyoming is 9-1, with home wins over Detroit Mercy, Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Hastings College (Neb.), Denver, McNeese State and Utah Valley, and road wins over Washington, Grand Canyon, Cal State Fullerton. The loan loss was a shellacking on the road at Arizona. The Cowboys are led by Graham Ike, who is averaging 19.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, although they have five players who are averaging double figures. They have some good 3-point shooters, especially Drake Jeffries, who is 35-67 (!) from deep. In fact, Jeffries only has three FG attempts that were not 3-pointers.

Stanford has yet to win away from Maples Pavilion this year.

This tournament closes out the nonconference portion of Stanford's regular season schedule. It's an opportunity, however unlikely, for a couple of Quad 1 wins before conference play resumes on Jan. 2 versus Cal. Covid willing of course.

Thanks, as always, for the good preview!

Fitzmorris in street clothes.

Harrison on the bench with two fouls.   Reynaud looking solid

And now two quick fouls on Reynaud.     Stanford up 14-6

Right now on floor we have Taitz, MOC, Lukas, JD, and Brandon Angel.

Even with a 9-11-point lead, does anybody here think Stanford will come out on top? I hope my gut's wrong, of course.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Diamond Head Classic, 12/22-25 - Hurlburt88 - 12-22-2021

I think we will … of course lead got cut to one before expanding back to 5 at the half.    So many different combinations of people in the floor!!

It’s a very physical game. Fans are livid at the elbows being thrown by 33 all game long. We’re holding our own though.

Phantom foul on Reynaud just now, at least IMO

Officiating has been atrocious the entire game.  Ike should have 4 or 5 fouls by now.  Not to mention 3 or 4 traveling's that haven't been called.

Meanwhile most of our fouls are hand checks that haven't been called most of this season.

Ike on bench with four fouls.   But Haase the master tactician counters with Lukas rather than leaving Reynaud in the game.    I am beyond frustrated as Wyoming takes the lead

As soon as I posted that, Ike gets 2 quick fouls.  I'll take credit.

Yeah, I was telling at my TV about Raynaud not being in.

Jones having a good game.   Would like to see Ingram really assert himself.  And would like to see Haase finish the game with the best five on the floor.

I turned the game on a few minutes ago and have seen way more minutes of commercials than game action.

So far Delaire, O'Connell and Spencer Jones, while by no means dominant, have been coming up Tree for us today.

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Diamond Head Classic, 12/22-25 - Hurlburt88 - 12-22-2021

Totally agree.  Still looking for an Ingram appearance, and am baffled why Keefe has mremains in the game (despite my love of his effort)

We just got a gift from the refs

Fouls on Keefe was  gift to Wyoming

Ingram great o board

We survive.   Not impressed with Haase’s lineup tactics.   More to come tomorrow!!!!

RE: Men's BB: Stanford @ Diamond Head Classic, 12/22-25 - Sam Leopold - 12-22-2021

OK, breathe out everybody!  We're moving on in the upper track.

Ike, Maldonado and DuSell are beasts of battle.  We needed a strong effort on both ends of the floor to reel in this victory and we delivered just enough.  Liberty on deck tomorrow.

The other reason this is a good win is that whenever Stanford has participated in one of these early-season, three-day, eight-team tournaments, too often (perhaps even every time out) it has gone L-L-W or L-W-L.  This is a very welcome change of narrative.

It didn't end up mattering, but the last foul on Keefe was NOT a foul.  And frankly, the last one on Jones wasn't one either.

I only saw last 5 mins, but Spencer Jones won that game for Stanford.

The FT shooting is just piss poor every time I watch.  DeLaire was the only guy I saw make two in a row.

Keefe shot an AIR BALL from the FT line!!!

He needs to do as the Chef does with treys: shoot 100 or more a day until he reaches 60% made of the last 50. Seriously. air ball from the FT line? Why aren't the coaches forcing him to adopt a smoother form? As he is, he's a permanent debit in crunch time.

Of course The Chef usually hits 90-95 of his 100 trey attempts after practice. I'd settle for Keefe hitting 30 of his last 50.
