Double black diamonds - BostonCard - 11-30-2021

That’s how Vanderveer referred to our schedule.

Quote:An avid skier, VanDerveer made an analogy to how tough a course the Cardinal are facing.

"I guess if maybe I had it to do it over again, I wouldn't take this team up to the top of the mountain and bring them down the double-black diamonds. But that's what I'm doing," she said. "Our team is welcoming the challenge.

For what it is worth, we are ranked 9th in that power ranking.

In defense of her original inclination to ski down those double black diamonds, I suppose that if you are confident you'll get a good seed in the NCAA tournament no matter what, why not schedule this hard? After last year, you know this roster has the guts to work through adversity. Even if this team isn't a 1 seed come March (and that's not to say we won't be), I have a feeling no one will be eager to play us.

It's the Tom Izzo school of scheduling. Go up against as many of the best teams you possibly can OOC, and that toughens you for conference play.  Aim for at least a Top 4 seed in the tournament, and be a battle-hardened team in March.
