Stanford to honor the 1970 and 1971 Rose Bowl teams and Jim Plunkett on Saturday - Spiny_Norman - 09-30-2021

The special throwback uniforms look contemporary to me. For those who hate the black outline on the uniform numbers, you don't have to look at them this week!

I hope that there is a good crowd to recognize and honor these legendary teams.

The uniform presented in the video is a composite of the wide pants stripes of the '80s, the block S on the helmet from the Chistriansen era, and of course the late '60s through '76 jersey with the cuff. I personally love the helmet and the jersey.

Uni's are great but I'd rather have the 2021 equivalent of a DL of Laz, Tipton, Alexander, Sampson, Graves, Cowan, McClure, Butler and Perrault. And Meyers at LT.

Stanford will also hope that the women's basketball greatness rubs off on the team.

Why aren't the current jerseys Cardinal Red? Is this black border supposed to enhance the look? All it does is diminish the striking contrast of white on red. Stanford's unis were very slick and classic up until a few years ago. Just another reason for me to dislike Nike.

AMEN.

Jeezuz H. C., can't this A.D. get ANYTHING right? How can the 1970 and '71 uniforms be such a mystery, such a challenge, to replicate?

If you're going to do this, don't you want to DO IT FREAKIN' RIGHT???  Lose the stupid the black "design elements" and make those stripes down the legs be the same width as existed then. The block S should be a replica of the RALSTON ROSEBOWL helmets.  I guess that, 50 years later, it's just too much to ask. For many of us, these were formative years, as in the best of our lives. Almost sacred. Some of us still put premium on authenticity. I guess not enough GAF today. Thing is, I still do. Hope the squad "executes" in such a way as to honor the uniform. It's the least they can do.

The pant stripe is definitely too wide but I don't see any black design elements in the throwback unis for Saturday.  The rest of it looks pretty close to the originals.  Here's hoping the team finds a way to surprise everyone and pull off a big upset like the 70s Rose Bowls.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Well, I don't remember either the 71 or 72 Rose Bowl uniforms having a Pac-12 patch or a Nike swoosh.

Interesting to me that even with the basic design elements of the old uniforms the overall look remains modern. It just doesn't look like those Rose Bowl teams. Little things matter here, probably the width of the leg stripe but also things like overall shininess of the helmet and material, the exact placement of the helmet S, width of arm-cuff, and cut.

p.s. A weird but irrelevant observation. Apparently to watch this ad for the coming game on the official site, one has to watch another ad first. Very annoying. That isn't the case on the twitter feed.

Those are valid points. I got to thinking about the evolution of the helmet S and here's a review of when things changed...

Tomorrow's throwback helmets somehow look pretty different from the '71 and '72 ones. Something about placement, but the size of the S also might be different.

Do you mean Jimmy Triolo (one of Bob Murphy's fathers-in-law), or some younger guy?

No, more likely Cheetah…

I hope they  play “Come Join the band”. Of course, the Axe Dance with Chief Lightfoot, can’t be recreated. Man I loved that as a kid.  I get why they can’t (shouldn’t) do it now.  This is not a political statement.  Just a wonderful memory of all those Saturdays with Dad and a couple friends with our family plan tix.

No, the guy from the band in '70 or '71. Big stasch, blond hair flowing out of the white hat. He used to run along the top of the small wall in front of the band and then stop and do the LSJU chant.

Another bandleader (drum major) later was a guy named Jim Jett. Serious acrobat. Definite crowd-pleaser. These were games followed by late afternoons at the Oasis, or Zott's, or The Goose. Good times. Good teams, too (Walsh 1). Tunes: "Beginnings", "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" "Uncle John's Band", "25 or Six to Four" (Chicago), "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is"...And, of course, the mythical No Host Cocktail Party at Rickey's Hyatt House, theoretically attended by alums from that week's opponent. First drum-major whose name I remember was Geordie Lawry.

Yes, that was Cheetah. Played drums, as I recall.
