One thing that is not clear from the email is whether this is another exhibition match or if it is the first game of the season. It's on livestream if you want to watch.

RE: MSoc -
DenverCard - 08-18-2021
I think this year's team stands to be very good. I thought last year's team was better than some previous years' teams that advanced far in the NCAA playoffs. [The bookend teams of their three-peat -- 2015 and 2017) were the two best teams in Standford history, but I believe that last year's team was at least on par with, and in some cases better than, the teams of 2016 (NCAA champs, via penalty kicks in the semifinals and finals), 2018 (quarterfinal loss to Akron) and 2019 (semifinal loss to Georgetown).] And that success last year was despite a season-ending injury to Ousseni Bouda, arguably their best player.
This year, Bouda is back, and he looked really good to me during the half of the exhibition against Bakersfield on Saturday that I was able to watch. He's very skilled with the ball, he took a wickedly powerful shot, and he works hard on the field. Meanwhile, the team only lost two starters from last year, and among the returners is Zach Ryan, last year's PAC-12 player of the year. One of the players who left was their top-notch goalie, Andrew Thomas -- now with the Seattle Sounders -- which is of course concerning, but they have highly regarded recruits to take his place.
The team is deep, as two top-10 recruiting years are, by and large, relegated to waiting their turn by the low attrition from the past couple of years, but who are available to play now in case of injury to starters.
We had some big-time soccer fans on this site a few years ago (Viking Guy, another) whose posts about the soccer teams I really miss. But I know there are others and I hope we can generate some discussion about the team as the year goes on.

Thanks DenverCard. I was hoping someone would take my post as an invitation to talk about the team; thank you for stepping up to the plate.
I haven't seen any pre-season rankings, or polls of the Pac-12, but I would have to believe we would be favorites to win the conference again.

I haven't seen any Pac-12 poll/ranking, but the NCAA has us #8 in their pre-season rankings.

Having relocated from New Orleans to Denver, an unanticipated benefit is the opportunity to see Stanford teams in action during away contests in Colorado. This fall, Men's Soccer plays at DU on Saturday October 16 at 7 p.m. and Women's Soccer plays at Colorado on Sunday October 17 at noon. I plan to attend both games. I'm not a particularly knowledgeable fan, but I can cheer at the right times.
Geaux Cardinal!

So with DenverCard taken, are you going to become BigEasyQueenCard*, or are the connotations too risqué?

He could also go with MileHighCard to employ another nickname for Denver. Nah, also too risqué.

Thank you oldalum and Papa John for addressing my identity quandary since the move West. You both got me thinking, with the following results:
BigEasyQueenCard – Risqué, and few know of Denver as the Queen City of the Plains.
MileHighCard – Risqué, but funny.
5280Card – Not as risqué as MileHighCard.
MooseCard – A hardy Colorado creature and also a family nickname.
HilltopCard – Using my new Denver neighborhood before someone else grabs it. Lots of Stanford grads in Denver.
CowTownCard – Taking a Denver nickname, but not unique to Denver (See Calgary, Cowaramup, Fort Worth, Kansas City, Vacaville, etc.).
BigEasyCard – No change. BostonCard has lived in the Bay Area for years.
FkaBigEasyCard – Subtly acknowledging the change.
In any event, Geaux Cardinal!

If the Jazz can keep that name while going to Utah, you can keep BigEasy in Colorado.

Bouda looked super-sharp. Now, I'm sure part of that is the competition (Bakersfield isn't exactly UW), but much of that was his skill. And you hinted at it, but his relentless pressure was particularly impressive. Terrific return by him. He & Ryan are going to be a handful together...which also opens things up for other guys. (Segal and, I'm guessing, Agostinelli among them)
Weaver had about a 7-10 minute run where he had all the answers. Not sure how much we're going to learn about the keepers in these exhibition matches...more of those answers are probably being provided in training. (and we're not invited to watch that)
Good start for the squad, especially considering they'd only had a couple days' practice leading up to it. A long way to go, and a lot to work on.
As I type this, I don't think a Pac-12 coaches preseason poll has been released yet....I'd be surprised if the top three didn't go Stanford-Washington-Oregon State...

Annnnd four minutes after I posted that, the coaches poll was announced. Stanford-Washington-Oregon State-UCLA-Cal-SDSU. Stanford with 4 first-place votes, UW with the other two.

The PAC-12.com site is now saying that Santa Clara game this Saturday (8/21, 7 PM) will be on PAC-12 networks. GoStanford still says it is on Stanford Live Stream only. A recent schedule change, as my Comcast programming guide still doesn't list this game?

Stanford men's soccer played Santa Clara to a scoreless draw in its 2nd and final exhibition game.
https://gostanford.com/news/2021/8/21/mens-soccer-preseason-stalemate.aspx
Season opens Thursday in Dallas vs. SMU.
RE: MSoc -
DenverCard - 08-22-2021
Not a riveting game last night. Very few scoring changes for either team. No close calls experienced by either team, although Santa Clara had a shot that was headed over the goal by Keegan Hughes that would have presented a challenge if it had not been deflected.
It seems that until one team scores a goal in a soccer game, prompting the other side to take more chances and the scoring team to smell blood, it's more difficult to break down the opponent's defense. And I got the sense that Santa Clara may have overachieved relative to expectations, perhaps because they were more invested in the game, given Stanford's recent success. That's not to say that Stanford lacked its usual aggressive style, but many of the players on Stanford seemed a bit off. I observed an inordinate number of tripping over the ball, attempts to dribble through traffic, and sloppy passes. Maybe they've been training especially hard.
Hoping for better at SMU this week, although playing soccer in Texas in August does not seem conducive to quality play. Stanford's depth may turn out to be a difference maker.

Yes, I moved from Puerto Vallarta to Boston (Natick) in 2003 and lived there until 2010. I've been in the Bay Área since late 2014.
