David Shaw Interview -
Hank 91 - 08-18-2021
I spent some time talking to David Shaw at Media Day last month, but a family vacation delayed this post. We talked about a lot of interesting things -- Big Game, the UCLA comeback, recruiting, the quarterback competition, the schedule and his theories on scheduling, and a few other things. Take a peek if you're interested.

Good stuff Hank. I really appreciate how you ask questions that get substantive answers without turning things into trying to get a gotcha or the sort of inane questions you see like "You just won a big game; walk me through what was going on in your mind"
Sounds like we will have a QB announcement no later than the 30th.

BC, after shooting thousands of interviews what bugs me the most are the reporters who answer their own questions in their questions. Locally a guy named Kreuger (SI guy) is the biggest offender.
Nice job Hank!

Ralph Barbieri, RIP, the absolute worst on that front.

Ah T we finally agree. He was terrible Ask the question and without hesitation he would answer his own question

His thoughts about the 8-game vs 9-game conference schedule were really interesting—and somewhat surprising, from where I sit.

I think he has been consistent with that. What did you find somewhat surprising?

Yeah, as I read it, his attitude is that the ACC and SEC should be more manly conferences and schedule 9 conference games, because the fact that the Big Ten and Pac-12 do and they don't definitely disadvantages us.

There are probably a few other areas/topics we agree on; and who knows, maybe we'll stumble across them this fall season . . .

Didn't Von Appen once say something to the effect that, "We are on the same team but that doesn't mean that I trust you."

Useless fact: Fred Von Appen lived a block away from me when he coached the Niners. His son did a metal etching of "The Catch" in an art class we took together in the 80s. He got me Roger Craig's autograph when he was a ball boy up at Rocklin, and was mocked by classmates for being a fan of the band Asia - HAHA.

I worked with a woman mid 80s who worked in the football office with Fred in early 80d at Arkansas. She went home from Christmas brought me back a pig Hat.
Worked briefly with Roger Craig.
Just trying to keep up :)

I worked Huey Lewis' first ever-large-scale concert backstage with Vince "Jitterbug" White. And I coached Brent Jones' wife Dana in flag football in college. And I had two Stanford football players (defensive backs) as summer marketing interns.
Also trying to keep up...

I went to lunch w my Dad a couple of his friends and Von Appen just prior to the 1-11 season. He was, I believe DC. One of us asked how the defense looked. He said “we’re small. But we make up for it by being slow.” We laughed. He wasn’t kidding.
