Are you joking.  The dude is not even in the stadium.

C.a.l has buses of kids that went to UCLA this weekend.  I know because they were at the same truck stop on the way home that I stopped at.  They were everywhere, and it was so crazy that I had to go to another store to avoid the crowd.  That is commitment and I am sure they tried to bring some excitement to the Rose Bowl.  Didn't help, but they were there.  And remember, this is not some BCS standings type team.  They were going to LA to support a 4-3 team play a 3-4 team and ride a bus that will get home at 3PM.

To sit a dorm and watch on a screen is nice, but not exactly the standard for student support of a top 3 or top 4 team.

How'd that work out for them?

Yes, of course. Because someone who doesn't have hundreds of bucks and a weekend to blow on a game counts less than someone who does. Makes perfect sense.

Oh, let's not use a money excuse.  That's weak.  Your average student that is going to be able to find money for beer or a spring trip should have money for the team's most important road trip.  That is if the students are excited about football.  Certainly, your average Stanford student is no less able to pay for a bus than any other USA college student population.  And we are talking about a bus going down the I-5.

In terms of the support producing a benefit.  The support does not always work out, but this thread was about excitement.  I can assure you that TV networks want students in the stands, not sitting in their dorm rooms providing "mental support".

Stanford does not travel well.  That is well known, but it used to be a tradition for students to go to the SoCal games.  Stanford did have some students in the stands, so it was not terrible.  I just would not use a bunch of kids sitting in their dorm room as example #1 for excitement.

Besides, I think the best evidence that this excitement idea is not a Stanford thing comes from Luck himself.  He did come back to school because he felt like he could still just be a student on campus.  So in some ways our student's indifference has been the biggest positive for the program.

Money excuse is weak? In this economy? Seriously?

Stubhub had the lowest ticket price of $150 right before the game. It probably takes what, two, three tanks of gas? Add in food and parking and I'm guessing you're running well over 200 bucks--and that's a pretty conservative estimate. I'm not sure what universe you live in, but that's a major expense, particularly for students with presumably little to no income, and often with substantial debts. So, no, bullshit.

Those may have been the band buses.  UC East Bay buses its band to their SoCal appearance most years.  They aren't marked and the students all look the same at a truckstop.  In any event, UC East Bay is obviously much larger so it is easier to find some kids to bus down out of a of extremely large proportions student body.  The Stanford sections were very full and was a good showing compared to other schools according to my brother who (I hate to admit) has season tickets at SC.  Stanford is buiding quickly from years of wandering in the football desert.  Our fans will always be a little different and that is a great thing.  Stanford travelled very well to the last two bowl games, has sold out 6 of 7 games this year, and has a very full active student section.  A couple buses of weenies from UC East Bay on I-5 have nothing to do with it.

Cheers,
Pete F.

I don't think the SC season tickets are such a sensitive issue that they have resulted in a problem acknowledging his brother in general.  It's just that he tries to avoid revealing that fact if possible. Or, maybe this goes beyond grammar and you know more about him than I realize?

Ok, now I'm thinking that it goes beyond grammar and into the realm of SC hatred, okay.

I was teasing.

Hey, I'm willing to disavow my brother if the team needs it to win the championship.  It's not like I don't have others to replace him with, there are 9 kids in the family and 5 are boys.  It might even mean a little extra for me at Thanksgiving.  ;)

Cheers,

Nope.  My oldest bro is the SC doofus.  My younger bro is a true Stanford fanatic who was with me in the Stanford section on Saturday night.  He had to ride home with our elder and despite the outcome, my younger bro was not dropped off in Compton to find his own way home.

Cheers,
