High school basketball powerhouses form national league set to begin in 2021-22 - 82lsju - 05-24-2021

it will be interesting to see if this is successful and how it changes high school basketball

Quote:Six of the biggest high school basketball powerhouses, including Oak Hill Academy (Virginia) and Montverde Academy (Florida), are forming an elite national league set to begin in the 2021-22 season.

The National Interscholastic Basketball Conference will feature traditional powers Oak Hill, Montverde, IMG Academy (Florida), La Lumiere School (Indiana), Sunrise Christian Academy (Kansas) and Wasatch Academy (Utah), along with two other schools yet to be announced. The eight teams will play a 10-game regular season, play in special NIBC events and hold a postseason tournament.

There are plans to potentially expand the league in coming years.

Definite step backward.

These aren't high schools. They are NBA prep academies. Probably not many rocket scientists playing.

Some of those high school names sound familiar. Hasn't Stanford recruited from one or more of them?

Hopefully the athletes at these academies get paid.

Hopefully the whole enterprise goes down in flames.  While I get the desire to pay collegiate athletes who are adults and making gazillions of dollars of money to their schools, these are high school students, and they should be getting a high school education first and foremost, and playing basketball second.  Can't we let kids be kids at least until they graduate high school?

I know that this is a minority opinion, but we need to be getting money out of non-professional sporting leagues, not maximizing the value of these high school leagues and throwing the players a token salary to justify it.

You have an issue with the top high school programs forming a league where they play each other every year? Where's the problem in that? They already play a national schedule so what's the difference. Any kid who goes to IMG, Oak Hill, etc. for basketball is already a Top 100 recruit with a list of scholarship offers. They go there to test themselves against better comp, work on their bodies, and give themselves a better chance to make it to their ultimate goal: the NBA. I have no issue with the schools forming a league.

Neither do I but these are not "schools" in the traditional sense. They are training academies.

It would probably not be a bad thing if NBA developmental teams masquerading as high schools went the way of the dodo, but I know I'm tilting at windmills here.

I assume the schools involved are expecting to make money from this league. Does this mean that the players will have NIL rights?

IMHO, it would in fact be a good thing. One can argue that the skills and education to be had in college is not "necessary" for an NBA player, although I think that is arguable. The same cannot be said for the education and skills you are supposed to gain in high school. To function in today's world when you are going to make a big pile of money without those skills is just impossible. It will create a group of players with no chance to effectively manage their own future. Their agents and lawyers will get all the money, not to mention that it will be difficult for these players to exist when they either don't make it to the NBA or reach 30+ and get released.

Like Nick Bolletieri's tennis academy.

Frankly, I'd support it.  I don't think average HS basketball players like playing against future NBA players any more than vice-versa.
