NCAA football rules changes for 2021 - PVTree - 04-23-2021

Some Football rules have changed. Teams will need to go for 2 points on the second OT after aTD. Beginning on the 3rd OT, teams will only attempt 2 point plays until a winner is decided, no starting from the 25.

Interesting.  My first thought is, let's work on our "rub" routes so we don't have to run the fade too often.

I also like it when we run play-action or bootleg to the strong side and then throw back to the TE that lines up on the strong side, comes off his block, and runs toward the flag on the weak side.  That seems to work for us every time inside the 5 - but we don't show it more than once or twice a season. This Dalton Schultz TD vs. Notre Dame in 2017 is similar, although from further out (12 yard-line).

I'm sure Shaw and Tavita will be trying to hone down the 2-point conversion playbook and execution this spring.  Never know when you might end up in 2OT!

Seems like that should be called an illegal pick.

Personally, I agree, but it's only illegal if they call it! The article indicates that officials confirmed the call the next day, saying the contact with the defender was either mutual or initiated by the defender, so the no-call was accurate.

I think this is an area where rule changes have been considered over the last couple years, right?  I vaguely remember TV announcers talking about it.

I wish they’d disallow downfield blocking for pass behind the LOS.

I totally agree. It used to be possible for the defense to know if it was a straight run by what the wide receivers did. If they blocked, it had to be a run. The safeties could then play run all the way. Now screen passes and swing passes can happen after downfield blocks. If the linemen crossed the LOS it also was a run, although with the current rules in the NCAA the linemen can be 3 yards beyond the LOS on a pass play, even one that is not behind the LOS. This added to the additional advantage of the blocks themselves delivers a disproportionate advantage to the offense.

The offense already gets too many advantages as it is. You can't play bump and run. You have to be real careful of the QB. You have to be real careful of how you tackle. Some of these rules are for health reasons, but many of them are to make it easier to score. The helmet to helmet contact rule is seldom if ever enforced on the offense. If the running back drops his head and plows into the DB, if there is a call it will be against the DB. In my opinion that has made the game more like basketball on turf. Given how basketball is refereed these days, the convergence is fast approaching.

Thanks for the including the amusing animations, CArdinalSagehen.

It's such a running joke that whenever I hear the term "rub play", I've already automatically replaced it in my head with the phrase "pick play."

I like the rule change. I think it's practical. I think they should take multiple steps to keep things under 3 hours. I don't think it'll change planning much because how often do you have a game go into double overtime?
