Bryce Love Waived -

Depending on his health status, this might be the end of the road in football for one of the most entertaining college football players ever. I've told this story here before, but the first time I saw him was in an open scrimmage on the practice field prior to his freshman year. He ran for two long, explosive TDs and dusted the defensive backs by a full 10 yards before reaching the end zone. This might be hyperbole for a scrimmage, but it was impossible not to notice him and be awed.
I hope this means he can at least collect more on his insurance policy from 2018? Or maybe he will catch on elsewhere. What a likable guy, too. All the best to him, whatever the future holds!

So is this now two Stanford RBs that had their professional careers ruined by knee injuries against Cal in the last game of the season, or are there more?
Mike Mitchell was the first one who comes to mind. Bryce Love the second.

I'm still hoping Bryce can leave his mark in the NFL. If he doesn't go to a team where he'll have the chance to be the starter (Da Bears), I'd like to see him backup CMcC in Carolina like the old days.

It's football, if you go that route any Stanford opponent has likely ruined the careers of many Stanford players.
Simply, football is a cruel and dangerous game. Many on this board likely remember that awful day when a Stanford RB more than ruined the career of UW player Curtis Williams.

Darryl Stingley, Ray Chapman in baseball, all those NASCAR, F1 and Indy Car drivers. Risk-reward. Williams is an awful story on many levels.
I thought Love was going to attempt med school. Hope he makes it.

I was there. Will never forget it. Could tell instantly that something very bad happened when the hit was made on Kerry Carter, IIRC.

Read up on Williams. Not a hero.

Also, holy crap, how many felonies can you commit and still keep your scholarship on the UW football team?

If the WFT team doctors declared him physically unable to perform, it's not likely that another team's doctors would have a differing, second opinion, right? With both Alex Smith and Bryce Love stepping away from WFT today, it's a good time to reflect on how football makes life better and not the other way around.

Football injuries don't care if you are a sinner or a saint.

Williams' death so reminds me of something I said about Kerry Carter before his freshman season. I had watched Stanford's freshman practice for a couple of days and had seen Carter up close, both his physique and his running style. A friend of mine asked me what I thought of Carter, I responded by saying, "That guy could kill somebody." It was Williams who brought that fate upon himself, however. He was a vicious hitter who liked to lead with his helmet, as he did on his final play.

I hope he doesn't play another down and preserves brain function. He has other things to do in life.

Shouldn't that apply to all Stanford players?, or just the ones whom you believe have a special talent, especially in the medical field? I believe it was you who said that former Stanford player, Frank Buncom, was too smart to "waste his brain" playing football. How do you think your Cardinal is going to do this fall?

I know this is extreme thread drift, but your question is not rhetorical. The answer is: Many, if you are a star player. The article linked is a long one. For a reason.

Oof, I hadn't heard that story.
Also, I wouldn't call this
extreme thread drift--at least we're still discussing sports.

I remember back in the 60's Washington kicked its star running back off the team for being seen having a beer in a bar. The pendulum definitely swung the other way.

Quote:Love, who was cut by Washington yesterday, went unclaimed through waivers today. That means all 31 other teams had the opportunity to pick Love up for a non-guaranteed salary of $780,000, and no one took him.
Realistically, that may mean NFL teams just don’t think Love is ever going to get healthy.
I suppose if he really wants to keep chasing the dream, he'll have to be invited to a training camp as a free agent and start from the very bottom. But a successful comeback seems unlikely at this point.
On the bright side, regardless of what happens going forward, Bryce seems to have earned $1.6M gross by the age of 23 (see
https://overthecap.com/player/bryce-love/7903/). I assume this is in addition to whatever "loss of value" payout he might have received from his 2018 insurance policy. Maybe that could be another $2-3M, from what I can gather
here.
So that ACL tear cost him dearly, but he still pulled in some very good money from football.

Heard that the Niners are looking for depth at running back. . . .

Love should have been sat for several games during the 2016 season after he hurt his ankle. I’m not sure that he ever fully recovered from that.
