MBB: Pac-12 Transfers -
SamuelMcF - 04-12-2021
Naturally, there was a WBB thread about transfers and no MBB thread. Sounds about right.
Utah and Washington have SIX players transferring out each, including multiple starters and studs. Cal's stud Matt Bradley is transferring. Colorado has 2 starters and 2 rotational players transferring. Most of Oregon's and ASU's rotational depth pieces are transferring. Arizona is losing a combined 23 starts to transfer.
As it stands, Pac-12 schools are averaging 3 transfers out per school. The only 2 without an outbound transfer (yet) are Stanford and UCLA.
So far, six Pac-12 schools have incoming transfers, which include bonafide starters/top scorers from Boston College (ASU), UNLV (Utah), South Alabama (Wazzu), Robert Morris (ASU), Eastern Washington (Arizona), Brown (Wazzu), and UCSD (Wazzu), as well as rotational players from Arizona (UW) and Memphis (Oregon St).
The portal is more active than it's ever been, with
over 1300!!!!!! transfers/entrants already, eclipsing last year's mark with 3+ months to go.

LOTS of unhappy benchwarmers...

In old transfer news Tim Morris has been named interim coach at Cincinnati.

Heh, and I thought Stanford was in turmoil.
I saw WSU picked up the 4th leading scorer in D-I from 2021 and a D-II all-American.

Nah, the reason is the fifth year of eligibility.

Stanford and UCLA are both going after Rutgers big man Myles Johnson who is seeking a place to get an engineering master's degree. He got accepted into UCLA's program a few days ago and is waiting to hear back from Stanford...
Also rumors that Daejon Davis may enter the portal and head home to Seattle to play for UW. Should be an active offseason.

Little of column A, little of column B. The Covid eligibility rule just happened to accelerate an already increasing trend of mercenary-ship.

I think this year's volume is exacerbated by COVID rules. How many of the 1300 (!!) are grad transfers?

Johnson has now gotten into Stanford's grad engineering program. Now just between the coaching staffs to reel him in...

He was "blessed" to be accepted to Stanford, and "honored" to be accepted to UCLA.
Reading the tea leaves, blessed > honored.

It may come down to the average starting salary of the graduates of each school. If there's a noticable difference, I would go with that school if the athletic side is fairly even.

The WSJ (possibly paywalled) had an article about this:
https://www.wsj.com/articles/ncaa-college-basketball-transfer-portal-11618246228?mod=hp_listc_pos3
At this point, 28%(!) of Div. 1 basketball players are in the transfer portal.
Quote:The trend isn’t exclusive to men’s basketball. In women’s hoops, where teams carry 15 scholarships, about one in every six players is looking for a new home with 863 in the transfer portal as of April 12. Transfers are becoming more popular in football, too, where more than 1,400 players have put their names in the portal, according to data from 247sports.com.
I'm not sure how I feel about this. I support increased choices for student-athletes and I generally think fewer restrictions on transferring is probably a good thing. But when 1 in 4 student athletes is transferring, it seems less like a transfer portal and more like free agency. It's probably worth seeing how this settles out in the post-coronavirus environment.

Free agency coming. In most college sports it’s been true forever

I agree that this year probably isn't a good one to use as a prediction of future trends. I would also like to know what percentage of these transfers are "grad transfers". I think those "transfers" are completely different things. These transfers are often academically justifiable (even important) to allow a graduate to pay for advanced studies at another university. It also may be speculative, in that the athlete is going elsewhere to study and if nothing materializes athletically said graduate will "retire".
I suspect most undergraduate transfers are driven by the desire for more playing time or to escape a mismatch with a given program. These transfers basically are "free agency". They are not academically related. That doesn't mean such transfers are all bad. If a player has some kind of an epiphany and has the opportunity to go from a lower-prestige program to a high-prestige program along with enhanced professional opportunities, it makes lots of sense. If it is just the opportunity to compete for playing time elsewhere, it calls into question the place of academics in the athlete's priorities. If academics are "generic" and one university is interchangeable with another the concept of "student-athlete" becomes unsupportable. It is all about sports and little or nothing about education. In that case, the future would not be compatible with sports in a university setting IMHO. The importance of "student" in "student-athlete" has to be significant to justify the current model. If it becomes clear that is not the case for a large percentage of college athletes, the universities will have a very difficult time arguing for non-profit status and anti-trust protection.

Does anyone know if this year's undergrad transfers are all immediately eligible due to the pandemic? (Usually there would be a sit-out year unless the player gets a waiver.) That could be a major factor at play if true.

The NCAA is expected to pass a one-time transfer waiver for all athletes which allows a player to transfer without having to sit out a year once. However a second transfer by the player would require them to sit out.

Isn't this bad news for Stanford men's basketball (and maybe football too--though I don't follow football transfers as much)? Our opponents already load up on transfers every year while we keep the transfer door firmly shut. And now transferring will be even more attractive. There won't be anything stopping the best players from small schools or schools with bad teams from transferring. Programs like Arizona and USC are already attractive destinations for transfers, and the quality of available transfers is going to increase.
This new rule feels like it was purposefully designed to keep Stanford in the bottom half of the standings.

USC, Oregon State, and Utah just inked another transfer each, and of course either us or UCLA (fingers crossed!) will get Myles Johnson tomorrow. Arizona and ASU had another portal entrant each. This all happened within the last 24 hours.
Transfer pandemonium is in full swing right now. I'm actually having a ton of fun tracking all the movement in the conference.

I seriously doubt the NCAA developed this rule to keep us down, especially when Muir and Company are doing a good job of that all on their own.

And prior to Muir & Co. there was the Director of Admissions from the East!
