WBB STAN 72 CAL 33 -
81alum - 02-27-2021
Preview:
We played Cal way back on December 13 and beat them 83-38. But Cal has many young players and that was an eternity ago. Cal is only now beginning to come into its own. Since that game Cal had 9 losses and 8 postponed games before they finally got a win in their last game against ASU.
Of Cal's top 6 scorers, 4 are freshmen and 2 are sophomores. Only three players have started in more than half of their games. Those three are 6'3" freshman Dalayah Daniels who is averaging 12 points and 7 rebounds, 5'5" sophomore guard Leilani McIntosh who is shooting 37% from three, and 6'2" sophomore forward Evelien Lutje Schipholt who is averaging 7 points and 7 rebounds.
How did they beat ASU? McIntosh had 21 points and was 4/4 from three point range, freshman guard Mia Mastrov and Schipholt each had 12, and ASU was held to 29% shooting. ASU is probably the worst shooting team in the league to begin with, and Cal's defense certainly was more than enough for the 67-55 win. The first quarter of that game was not scintillating viewing. At the end of it the score was ASU 8 Cal 5.

Ah! That explains it.
Several teams in the Pac 12 are developing young talent very early in that way. Their entering classes of 2021-22 are going to be significantly ahead of our entering class of 2021-22. Normally I think would think this is a terrible idea--but given how awful high school is at the moment I can't blame anyone for graduating early and starting something that in far more interesting and in-person.

There seem to be quite a few doing this. I assume one factor is the fact that it won't cost them a year of eligibility given the NCAA decision to allow people playing this year to have an extra year.

One reason is these almost HS kids can’t play HS this year. And they are good. So why not

Start the seniors...Williams, Wilson, Jerome, and 2 bench managers/practice squaders.
This game should not be close, and we should play "the bench" heavily. Have Haley, Brink, Hulls, Williams, and Wilson rested for the tourney.
Belibi, Prechtel, Jerome, Agnes, Jump, and Jana should get the bulk of the minutes.

I saw that. ASU has been improving. Let's hope any threat of upsets ends with that game.
ASU is shooting so much better than it usually does, and very nice to see their only senior having a good game. Big smiles, relaxed play. Not sure if they will hang on to win but it is clearly a more competitive game than Arizona expected.

OT for UA/ASU. I assume our game starts on time. P-12 Bay Area has it listed for those that get that.

Arizona tied it up when McDonald fell down and they called a foul on ASU. So they are going to overtime. Hope that does not create problems for covering our game now.

McDonald's gets away with too many flops

We are up on Pac 12 Bay Area while ASU Arizona finished on Pac 12 Network. The game has not started yet...perhaps they are delaying it a bit.
Normal starters.
Game has started.

Asu beats Arizona. Amazing.
Utah just cancelled their game vs Colorado today. Can they play weds to start the Pac 12 tournament??

We lead 14-7 after one quarter. Our defense has held Cal to 3/12 shooting, but Anna has already picked up 2 fouls.
We are not shooting the ball very well at 36%, but 6 players have already scored for us.

The brackets they just showed had us, if seeds all held, playing WSU, Oregon, and Arizona in the Pac 12 tourney. That is not an easy sequence. I'm not sure if remaining games today could shake that up, or not...
Announcers say that Tara has said that all 3 of our seniors are welcome to come back next year and she has already ordered their jerseys. Of course, this does not mean it will actually happen, but nice to know that Tara is not ruling anyone out as of today.
Meanwhile, Kiana Williams is headed with the trainer to the locker room.
Kiana back out on the bench with no obvious injury. Now back in the game.
Well, that was a terrible ending to the first half. Now only a small lead going into halftime. 31-25 after leading by 16. Have not seen Wilson out there for a while--Cal closed the gap with Wilson out.
Jones, by the way, hitting 4/7 including very difficult shots and only 1 turnover. So far she is having a much better game than last time.
