I can understand cancelling a game because of Covid with no negative consequences.  But if a team cancels a game because they have too many injuries and cannot dress enough players, IMO that should be a forfeit.  Otherwise, it's not fair to the team that was ready to play.

During this strange season the league decided other wise. Remember players have opted out due to Covid. In UCLAs case that’s three. Plus the two Aussies who couldn’t come. BtW Stanford has at least 3 Frosh Aussies and they came.

Maryland just scored 51 points in the first half against Nebraska.  They shot 60.6% 55.6% 75.0%.  I would prefer to avoid them in the tourney.

For what it's worth, I am with marty here. It's college sports. Go grab someone from an intramural team if necessary. [Isn't that essentially how Texas A&M's 12th Man tradition got started? Actually, I don't care, really, so I am not going to look it up.] But, of course, if the rule allows a declaration by a school that it does not want to play due to injuries, the rule is the rule. It's just that it is, imo, an unwise rule.

Kudos to the Washington women's team. They were down several players, IIRC, when they played us recently. But they played us. Good on them.

And good on our men's team, which played a lot of games down three starters. At some level, college sports should be about the kids playing games, not just about how it affects rankings, records, etc.

On a personal note, I am biased on this issue because I would have never gotten much playing time in (junior) college football were it not for injury-depletion desperation. Instead, I played most of the third quarter and all of the fourth against Golden Valley Lutheran because the other two guys who knew the plays for the receiver position were in the hospital or on the way there. We lost 62-0, but they still played their starters until the last couple plays because even in juco, a blowout win looks good to poll voters. [Our league had a really low athletic scholarship limit, like $400 or something like that. Golden Valley Lutheran gave its players "Christian Leadership" scholarships and thereby did an end run around that rule. It was amazing how big and fast their "Christian Leaders" were, including a linebacker who was something like 6' 4" and about 240 or 250 pounds of muscle. He did not see me coming on a crackback block, which was legal in those days, but it didn't really matter as he still swatted me away like a flea, though I like to think I slowed him down a nanosecond or two on his way to demolishing our tailback. BTW, the day I saw a story in the paper a few years later announcing that Golden Valley Lutheran was going out of business, I let out a whoop of joy. I guess they overspent on "Christian Leaders."]

The rule is a team needs 7 scholarship players to play. If less they can’t if 7 or more they must. It’s a rule not a team decision

Thanks, Bob. I did not realize that. That does make things different. [And it is inconsistent with the Pac12 Network crawl report stating that this was a school decision by UCLA. But you are a much more reliable source of information than the Pac12 Network. And I absolutely mean that.]

So UW presumably had seven scholarship players left when we played them? I still say "good on them" for not trying to find "injuries" for a few more. IIRC, they had "practice players" on the court to play one of the best teams in the country.

And I now believe even more strongly that this is a bad rule. One of the things I enjoy about college sports is when some team member who almost never gets to play is in the spotlight all of a sudden. Sometimes it makes for a very special moment.

I realize that the response by those defending the rule will be "COVID makes everything different." That's a legitimate view, but I beg to differ.
